Using full tunnel mode for meet.google.com and video calls and downloading with ADM #420
Hello there. I've been using the full tunnel mode for about 2 days now, and it works ok.
I deployed the mhrv-rs client on a local vps and used xray on it to share the configs for v2ray clients, the problem is, the google apps do not work, especially gmail and meet. I think it is because the packets that are being sent to google sni's are not going through the proxy, and therefore I have not been able to use meet, I was wondering if there is a way that can send meet.google.com traffic through proxy, and if it's even possible to have video calls using this protocol. currently I've deployed 4 google scripts.
And one more thing, last night I tried to download a 400MB file on ADM(android download manager) and I found a strange behavior, at first the download didn't start at all and the estimated time was around 2 million years(:D) but after a few minutes, it started, and the speed was weirdly jumping between 0Kb/s, 250Kb/s and 3 or 4MB/s !
why is that? I set the download threads to 16, and since we know the requests get round-robbin'd between deployments, does that mean having more deployments increases the speed and stability on multi-thread download managers like ADM? if so it would be a huge improve in daily-usage to just download what you need.

@ipvsami — great question, and you've hit a known architectural limit of the Apps Script Full mode path. Let me walk through why Google services don't work, what's possible, and what's not.
Why meet.google.com / gmail.com / Google services don't work in Full mode:
In Full mode the request path is: client → mhrv-rs → Apps Script (UrlFetchApp.fetch) → upstream destination. UrlFetchApp has a hard self-loop restriction: it refuses to make HTTP requests to Google's own services. Specifically:
*.google.com (all subdomains, including meet.google.com, gmail.com, maps.google.com, script.google.com)
If you try, Apps Script returns either an empty response or a 4xx error. This is hardcoded into UrlFetchApp — Google built this restriction to prevent Apps Script from being used as a free Google-internal proxy. It's not a config we can flip.
So for Google services in Full mode through Apps Script: cannot work, at all, by design.
What IS possible:
Bypass the relay for Google services from your VPS xray config.
Since you're already running xray on the VPS as the first hop for v2ray clients, the cleanest fix is to have xray route Google domains direct from VPS (not through mhrv-rs proxy), and route everything else through mhrv-rs. This way Google services exit from your VPS's IP (Hetzner / wherever) directly, and non-Google traffic still benefits from mhrv-rs's domain-fronting cover.
With this, your v2ray clients automatically route Google domains direct from your VPS. Gmail and Meet will work normally because they exit through your VPS's IP (which is presumably non-blocked from outside Iran).
However: if your v2ray clients are on Iranian networks AND your VPS is geo-blocked from Iran (Hetzner is sometimes filtered from certain Iran ISPs), the direct-Google path through your VPS won't reach the clients. In that case you need either a different VPS or a fallback chain.
Meet specifically: WebRTC/STUN/TURN traffic.
Even if Meet's signaling works through your VPS direct-routing, video calls use WebRTC, which needs UDP through STUN/TURN servers. UDP traversal across your VPS depends on whether xray is set up to forward UDP (most v2ray/xray builds support it but config can drop UDP). For voice/video to actually work:
xray's inbounds must include "udp": true
Outbound to direct-Google must allow UDP
VPS firewall must NOT block STUN ports (default 3478 UDP)
The VPS must have public IPv4 that's reachable from the client side
If those are all in place, Meet video calls work through the same direct-from-VPS path as Gmail.
mhrv-rs alone cannot carry video calls reliably.
Even setting aside the Google-service restriction: WebRTC needs low-latency UDP. mhrv-rs's path is client → Apps Script (HTTP) → upstream — Apps Script can't carry UDP, and even for HTTP-tunneled UDP (which we don't implement), the 250-500ms Apps Script latency floor + 30s response cliff would make video calls unusable. Voice/video calls are categorically out of scope for any HTTP-relay-on-Apps-Script architecture.
Practical recommendation for your use case:
Since you have a VPS + xray + Full mode running:
Update your xray config with the routing rules above so Google services exit direct from VPS
Make sure UDP is enabled in xray for Meet/Calls support
Test gmail/meet from a v2ray client — should now work
For the documentation gap: this configuration pattern is exactly the "dual-routing-in-xray" workflow that #406 was asking about. I'm queueing a docs PR adding docs/full-mode-google-bypass.md with this exact xray config snippet. Will cross-reference from #406.
v1.9.x consideration:
We could potentially add a passthrough_hosts config to mhrv-rs that bypasses the relay for specified hosts (lets them go direct from the client's network instead of through Apps Script). This would push the "skip Google" routing decision into mhrv-rs itself, so users without xray could still get Google services working. Tracking in #303 (passthrough_subnets) — same architecture, different config surface.
This issue stays open as the tracking issue for the Full-mode-Google-bypass docs work. Once docs/full-mode-google-bypass.md lands (~1 week, alongside the v1.8.x batch), I'll cross-link + close.
You're also one of the contributors I'll be tagging on the v1.9.0 xmux design issue (your earlier engagement on roadmap discussions is appreciated). Will ping you when it's drafted.

Actually my mhrv-rs client is running on a vps in Iran, and it is using full tunnel mode to connect to a vps in Germany, so the x-ray panel is working on an Iranian IP address so if I exclude the google domains, they just drop and do not work, so this wouldn't solve the problem for me. is including udp:true in x-ray config going to solve the problem for meet through web? because meet.google.com loads on my browser, but the application doesn't work. but I'm assuming the answer is no because we finally need *.google.com to establish the connection.
so, can we use any other video calling platforms like whatsapp or skype? (with udp set to true)
@ipvsami — that's an important detail I missed. Your topology is the inverse of what I assumed:
v2ray client (anywhere) → xray server (Iranian VPS) → mhrv-rs Full mode → tunnel-node (German VPS) → internet
Your Iranian VPS is the xray entry point, not the tunnel-node. So when xray "routes Google direct", direct from Iran ⇒ Iran ISP filters Google ⇒ drop. You're stuck in a catch-22 because both paths are bad:
Through mhrv-rs: Apps Script's UrlFetchApp blocks *.google.com
Direct from Iran VPS: Iran ISP blocks/throttles direct to Google
Solution: route Google through the German VPS bypass.
You need a third path: traffic to Google goes from Iranian VPS → German VPS direct (already established via your tunnel-node connection) → Google. Skip Apps Script entirely for Google domains.
The trick is to expose a SOCKS5 server on the German VPS that the Iranian xray can route Google traffic through, alongside the existing tunnel-node. So the German VPS runs two services:
mhrv-rs tunnel-node on port 8443 — what Apps Script calls back to (your existing setup)
xray as SOCKS5 server on port 1081 (or any port) — direct outbound for Google domains
meet.google.com page loading but app not working = your current setup loads HTML pages (which arrive over TCP) but WebRTC media (which uses UDP) fails. With the routing above + udp: true on both ends:
Page load: meet.google.com → German direct route → works
Signaling (WebSocket): same path → works
Media (UDP STUN/TURN): UDP routes through germany_direct to the German VPS xray → German VPS forwards UDP direct to Google STUN/TURN → works
Should give you working video calls assuming the udp:true is end-to-end.
For WhatsApp / Skype / FaceTime / Telegram voice:
These don't use Google STUN. They use their own infrastructure:
WhatsApp (Meta): turn-relays.fbsbx.com, edge-mqtt.facebook.com — these aren't Google-blocked but might be Iran-ISP-filtered. Through mhrv-rs (Apps Script): can't carry UDP, so WhatsApp messaging works (TCP) but voice/video fails. Through germany_direct: WhatsApp servers reachable + UDP works, so voice/video works.
Add geosite:whatsapp to the germany_direct routing list.
Skype (Microsoft): graph.skype.com, turn.azureedge.net — similar to WhatsApp, route through germany_direct.
FaceTime (Apple): only works between iOS/macOS devices, uses Apple's own STUN. Add geosite:apple to germany_direct list.
Telegram (voice/video): MTProto. Apps Script can't carry MTProto. germany_direct path bypasses Apps Script + Telegram works (Telegram's CDN is reachable from German IP). Already partially covered if you use Telegram MTProto proxy on the German VPS.
So your routing rules pattern is: everything that needs UDP or is a Google service → germany_direct. Everything else → mhrv (which goes through Apps Script).
mhrv-rs becomes the cover layer for HTTP/HTTPS only, and the German VPS becomes a direct-exit for everything UDP / Google / voice-video / latency-sensitive.
Does this match what you have in mind?
If yes, I can write this up as docs/full-mode-iran-vps-setup.md since this dual-VPS topology (Iranian xray entry + German exit) is a more advanced pattern than the single-VPS one we have docs for. Reply if you want me to draft the full setup including SOCKS5 auth + xray routing + UDP enablement, or if you have specific blockers I can help with.
This issue (#420) stays open as the tracking issue for the dual-VPS Full-mode docs.

Yes, this matches exactly what I had in mind, and I’m definitely in favor of having a full docs/full-mode-iran-vps-setup.md drafted for the dual‑VPS setup.
Before you start writing it, I just want to clarify one thing:
Regarding the networking side: given how extremely restrictive and deeply monitored the
Iranian network environment is, do you think there is any realistic risk that the Iran‑VPS → Germany‑VPS
link (SOCKS + mhrv full‑mode traffic) could be fingerprinted or flagged by ISPs/DPI systems?
In my case, the Iranian VPS cannot directly reach the German VPS unless the Apps Script
channel is in place, so I’m trying to understand whether this dual‑path setup is considered
safe and feasible under these constraints.
If this is not a problem, then please go ahead — I fully agree with creating the full documentation for this setup.
@ipvsami — important clarification + correction to my prior response. Re-reading your constraint:
"the Iranian VPS cannot directly reach the German VPS unless the Apps Script channel is in place"
This means there's no direct Iran→Germany TCP path in your topology. My earlier "dual-routing in xray with germany_direct SOCKS5 outbound" was wrong for your setup — that pattern requires the Iran VPS to reach Germany VPS directly via SOCKS5, which you can't do.
No direct Iran↔Germany leg exists at any point. Every byte from Iran exits via Google IPs (Apps Script). Germany VPS is only reachable via Apps Script's UrlFetchApp.fetch() outbound.
For Google services (your original question about meet.google.com):
The good news: this works without any dual-routing in xray.
Apps Script's UrlFetchApp self-loop block prevents direct calls to *.google.com
BUT Apps Script CAN call your Germany VPS tunnel-node (a non-Google host)
Germany VPS tunnel-node CAN call meet.google.com directly (no self-loop block on a non-Apps-Script-process)
So Google services work in Full mode automatically, without any special routing rules in xray. The dual-routing pattern I proposed was over-engineered for your case.
Clarifying which xray routing rules you actually need:
For your topology, xray on Iran VPS just needs ONE outbound:
All traffic → mhrv-rs → Apps Script → Germany VPS → upstream. Including Google services. Including UDP (which xray's UDP-associate carries to mhrv-rs's SOCKS5; mhrv-rs marshals through the relay).
caveat for UDP: Apps Script can't carry UDP. So if you need UDP (WebRTC for Meet calls, etc.), you'd need:
xray on Germany VPS with udp: true inbound
Iran VPS xray to route UDP traffic specifically through Germany VPS (which does require the direct Iran→Germany leg you said is blocked)
For your case, UDP-requiring features (voice/video calls) are not feasible in this topology. Only TCP-based services work. Meet web messaging works (TCP), but voice calls in browser do not.
On the DPI fingerprint risk question:
You asked whether the Iran VPS → Germany VPS link could be DPI fingerprinted. In your topology, that link doesn't exist as a direct TCP path. All Iran-side traffic goes to Google IPs (script.google.com, googleusercontent.com after redirect, etc.) via Apps Script. Iran ISP DPI sees:
TLS to Google IPs with SNI=www.google.com (after SNI rewrite)
Outbound encrypted bytes — content not decryptable
Response payloads from Google IPs
This is architecturally identical to vanilla apps_script mode (which thousands of mhrv-rs Iranian users have been running for the past year+). Iran ISPs don't single this out — it would require breaking all Google access, which they cannot do without enormous user backlash.
The Iran→Germany direct link doesn't exist in your case — there's nothing for DPI to fingerprint at that layer. The only fingerprintable surface is Iran→Google, which is the same low-risk surface mhrv-rs has always used.
On the docs draft:
Given the above clarification, the dual-VPS topology I'd document is actually simpler than my earlier suggestion:
docs/full-mode-iran-vps-setup.md would cover:
Why dual-VPS (over-provision for redundancy + xray entry for managing multiple v2ray clients in Iran)
Iran VPS xray setup (entry for v2ray clients, SOCKS5 forward to mhrv-rs)
mhrv-rs Full mode config (TUNNEL_URL = Germany VPS)
The "germany_direct SOCKS5 chain" pattern I mentioned earlier is only relevant for users where Iran→Germany direct IS reachable (different filtering profile, different ISP). Most Iranian users have your constraint (no direct Germany reachability), so the simple Apps-Script-fronted Full mode is the canonical path.
Will draft docs/full-mode-iran-vps-setup.md in the next 1-2 weeks as a separate PR. Will tag you for review when ready.
Apologies for the over-complicated initial answer — your constraint clarification helped me catch the architectural error. The simpler "Full mode handles Google services automatically" answer is the correct one for your topology.
This issue stays open as the tracking issue for the docs PR. Will close when docs land + you confirm.
