Fixes #1417.

What

In pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs, image alt text is now stored in markdown form instead of flattened plain text, and re-parsed on save:

  • Parse (convert_node Image arm): the alt subtree is serialized by a new get_alt_markdown/collect_alt_markdown — emphasis (*…*), strong (**…**), strikethrough, code spans (backtick fence sized to the literal), and links/images keep their markup; literal text is escaped so source-literal characters (e.g. an escaped \*) stay literal on re-parse.
  • Save (json_to_ast image special case): the stored alt is re-parsed into inline AST nodes (alt_markdown_to_nodes, same comrak options) and those become the Image node's children, instead of one flat Text child the formatter would escape. A plain-text alt re-parses to a single Text node — exactly the old behaviour, so plain alts are byte-identical.

Representation / editor coherence (acceptance criterion 2)

The PM image node and pkgs/id/web/src/editor.ts keep alt as a plain string attribute — no schema change. That string is now the markdown source for the alt. Documented limitation: the editor's alt popover shows/edits the markdown form (e.g. *alt*). No editor.ts change was needed.

Nested-link alt (acceptance criterion 3)

Preserved, not flattened: ![a [link](/y) b](/x.png) round-trips (nested Link is serialized recursively on parse and re-parsed on save), covered by the regression test.

Tests

New regression tests in pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs:

  • test_image_alt_markup_roundtrips — emphasis, strong, code-span, nested-link, and plain alt: stored alt form, exact round-trip, and re-parse fixpoint.
  • test_image_alt_markup_pm_to_md — save direction alone from PM JSON with a code-span alt.

CI on this PR is the verification for the existing web::markdown suite (CI-first; no local build run).

Queue task 1414 (Lane D worker shift).

Walkthrough

The web Markdown codec now stores image alt text as Markdown-form text and reparses it into inline nodes when saving. It preserves supported inline markup, escapes selected literal characters, and includes tests for markup round-trips and code-span output.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1417 requirements are met. pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs stores image alt as Markdown, preserves emphasis, strong, code spans, strikethrough, links, and nested images, and reparses the value when saving. The PM image schema keeps alt as a plain string. The documented editor limitation explains that the popover shows and edits Markdown-form alt text. Regression tests cover parse and save directions, including emphasis, strong, code spans, nested links, plain text, and reparse fixpoint behavior. The PR reports verification of the existing web::markdown test suite.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes are limited to image-alt Markdown serialization and reparsing in pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs, related regression tests, and documentation in the implementation comments and PR description. These changes directly support issue #1417. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

P2 Badge Escape entity introducers in literal alt text

When an image's literal alt text contains an entity spelling, this escape set allows it to be decoded a second time on save. For example, ![©](/x) initially has literal alt text ©, but the stored string is reparsed by alt_markdown_to_nodes into ©, silently changing the content. Escape & when serializing text nodes; the escape set also needs to protect literal tildes from being reinterpreted as strikethrough.

P2 Badge Preserve boundary spaces when serializing code spans

When a code literal starts and ends with spaces but is not entirely spaces, it needs padding just like a literal with boundary backticks. For example, an image alt containing a code span with two spaces on each side of foo initially parses to the literal foo. This branch emits that literal without padding, so the save-time reparse strips another space from each side and changes it to foo. Include this boundary-space case in the padding condition to avoid losing literal content.

P2 Badge Reparse alt text without interpreting block structure

For an image containing a hard break followed by block-looking text, parsing the alt as a standalone document can silently discard part of it. For example, ![first \n# second](/x) has both lines inside its alt, but the serializer stores the hard break as a newline, and this reparse produces a paragraph followed by a heading. Selecting only the paragraph's children drops # second on save. Parse in an inline image context rather than taking the first paragraph from a block parse.

P2 Badge Decode markdown-form alts at plain-text consumers

For an image such as ![a_b](/x), the new representation stores a\_b, but existing consumers still treat attrs.alt as plain text. pkgs/id/web/src/image-node-view.ts:51,241 copies that string directly into the native image alt, exposing the backslash to assistive technology and broken-image text. Resizing also sets dimensions at line 217, causing the HTML-image save branch in markdown.rs:1469 to persist alt="a\_b" instead of alt="a_b". Decode the markdown representation for native/HTML alt attributes, or keep a separate plain-text value; the documented popover limitation does not cover these consumers.

P2 Badge Escape nested link and image destinations

When a nested link destination requires angle delimiters or escaping, appending its decoded URL directly produces different inline syntax on the save-time reparse. For example, ![a [link](</a)b>) b](/x) stores a [link](/a)b) b: the nested destination is then truncated to /a, and b) becomes additional alt text. Emit a correctly delimited or escaped destination here and in the equivalent nested-image branch so valid URLs cannot alter the surrounding alt content.

P2 Badge Prevent delimiter collisions between adjacent emphasis nodes

When adjacent emphasis nodes use different source delimiters, always emitting * merges their boundaries into a different delimiter run. For example, ![_a_*b*](/x) initially contains two emphasized text nodes with combined text ab, but this serializer stores *a**b*. On the save-time reparse, CommonMark's delimiter rules leave the middle ** literal, producing emphasized text a**b and adding characters to the alt. Choose delimiters with awareness of neighboring nodes, or use an inline formatter that preserves these boundaries.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Pad code-span literals that begin and end with a space.

collect_alt_markdown adds a padding space only when the code literal starts or ends with a backtick. A literal such as " a " (one space at each end) is written as ` a `. CommonMark removes one space from each end of a code span when both ends are spaces and the span is not all spaces. Re-parsing the stored alt therefore produces the literal "a", and the leading and trailing spaces are lost. Extend the padding condition to this case, and keep the all-space case unpadded so it still round-trips.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep all blocks when re-parsing a multi-block image alt.

alt_markdown_to_nodes returns only the children of the first Paragraph found at the root. Any later paragraph, heading, list, or other block in the stored alt is dropped. The unsized-image branch in json_to_ast appends the returned nodes without checking them, so the saved image keeps only the first paragraph's text. For example, a stored alt of first\n\nsecond saves as ![first](src).

The trigger needs a PM image without width or height whose alt contains a block break. The popover input cannot enter a newline. The alt can arrive from HTML alt values, for example through paste (pkgs/id/web/src/editor.ts:99) or through the HTML parser (pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs:1011-1012). Sized images use HtmlInline and skip this path.

Collect the inline children of every block returned by the re-parse, joined with a separator, instead of only the first paragraph's children. Decide the separator and the handling of non-paragraph blocks before changing the function.

Escape plain-text image alts before they are stored as markdown.

The change in pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs changes how unsized images with markdown syntax in their alt are saved. Two sources reach this path:

  • Stored ProseMirror image nodes whose attrs.alt is plain text from before this change.
  • Unsized HTML tags imported through parse_img_tag, which stores the alt attribute without escaping.

On save, prosemirror_to_markdown emits an unsized image as a standard Markdown image. json_to_ast then re-parses attrs.alt as inline Markdown. An alt such as *literal* is saved as ![*literal*](src), which renders as emphasized text rather than literal asterisks. The base code flattened the alt to a text node, and the formatter escaped it, so these alts were saved correctly.

The PR comment says plain-text alts are unchanged. That holds only for alts without Markdown-significant characters. Sized images are not affected, because their alt is escaped as an HTML attribute.

A safe localized fix is not established. A plain-text alt and a Markdown-form alt are both stored as attrs.alt with no provenance marker. Escaping on import would not fix existing stored alts. A fix needs a provenance marker or a data migration, and that choice belongs to the author.

Add a regression test for an unsized image with a plain alt such as *literal* (both a PM node and an HTML ), asserting that the saved Markdown keeps the literal asterisks.

Expand description

A 100% CommonMark and GFM compatible Markdown parser.

Source repository and detailed `README` is at github.com/kivikakk/comrak.

You can use `comrak::markdown_to_html` directly:

    `use comrak::{markdown_to_html, Options};
    assert_eq!(
        markdown_to_html("Olá, **世界**!", &Options::default()),
        "<p>Olá, <strong>世界</strong>!</p>\n"
    );`

Or you can parse the input into an AST yourself, manipulate it, and then use your desired formatter:

    `use comrak::{Arena, parse_document, format_html, Options};
    use comrak::nodes::NodeValue;

    let arena = Arena::new();

    let root = parse_document(
        &arena,
        "Hello, pretty world!\n\n1. Do you like [pretty](#) paintings?\n2. Or *pretty* music?\n",
        &Options::default());

    for node in root.descendants() {
    Configuration for the parser and renderer. Extensions affect both.
plugins
    Plugin definitions.

## Macros§

create_formatter
    Create a formatter with specialised rules for certain node types.
node_matches
    Shorthand for checking if a node’s value matches the given expression.

## Structs§

Anchorizer
    Converts header strings to canonical, unique, but still human-readable, anchors.
Options
    Umbrella options struct.
ResolvedReference
    A reference link’s resolved details.

## Functions§

escape_commonmark_inline
    Escapes the input, rendering it suitable for inclusion in a CommonMark document in a place where regular inline parsing is occurring. Note that this is not minimal — there will be more escaping backslashes in the output than is strictly necessary. The rendering will not be affected, however.
escape_commonmark_link_destination
    Escapes the input URL, rendering it suitable for inclusion as a link destination per the CommonMark spec.
format_commonmark
    Formats an AST as CommonMark, modified by the given options.
format_commonmark_with_plugins
    Formats an AST as CommonMark, modified by the given options. Accepts custom plugins.
format_xml
    Formats an AST as HTML, modified by the given options.
format_xml_with_plugins
    Formats an AST as HTML, modified by the given options. Accepts custom plugins.
markdown_to_commonmark
    Render Markdown back to CommonMark.
markdown_to_commonmark_xml
    Render Markdown to CommonMark XML.
markdown_to_commonmark_xml_with_plugins
    Render Markdown to CommonMark XML using plugins.
markdown_to_html
    Render Markdown to HTML.
markdown_to_html_with_plugins
    Render Markdown to HTML using plugins.
parse_document
    Parse a Markdown document to an AST.
version
    Return the version of the crate.

Escape ~ and entity-like & in image alt text.

On save, the stored alt is re-parsed as Markdown. collect_alt_markdown escapes only \ * _ \ [ ]` in Text nodes. Two literal sequences survive unescaped and change meaning on save:

  • ~ can start strikethrough. The alt \~\~word\~\~ opens as the literal ~~word~~, is stored unescaped, and saves as ![~~word~~](/x.png). Reopened, that alt is a strikethrough node, not the original literal.
  • & can start an entity. The alt &copy; opens as the literal ©, is stored unescaped, and saves as ![©](/x.png).

Escape ~ and escape & when it is followed by an ASCII alphanumeric or #. Backslash escapes are valid for both characters in CommonMark, so the stored form re-parses to the original literal.

Suggested fix
         NodeValue::Text(t) => {
-            for ch in t.chars() {
-                if matches!(ch, '\\' | '*' | '_' | '`' | '[' | ']') {
-                    out.push('\\');
-                }
-                out.push(ch);
-            }
+            let mut chars = t.chars().peekable();
+            while let Some(ch) = chars.next() {
+                let escape_entity = ch == '&'
+                    && chars.peek().is_some_and(|next| next.is_ascii_alphanumeric() || *next == '#');
+                if escape_entity || matches!(ch, '\\' | '*' | '_' | '`' | '[' | ']' | '~') {
+                    out.push('\\');
+                }
+                out.push(ch);
+            }
         }

This changes the stored PM alt for plain alts that contain ~ or & followed by an alphanumeric or #. The saved Markdown stays identical. Add round-trip tests for \~\~word\~\~ and &copy;. The existing test_image_alt_markup_roundtrips covers neither.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/web/markdown.rs around lines 764 - 768:
Update the Text-node escaping in collect_alt_markdown to escape `~` and to
escape `&` only when followed by an ASCII alphanumeric character or `#`, while
preserving the existing escapes. Add round-trip tests for the literal tilde and
entity-like alt text cases so saving and reopening preserves their original
text.

Serialize spaced nested link destinations in angle form.

get_alt_markdown writes a nested link destination into the stored image alt without angle brackets. A destination that contains a space is not a valid bare CommonMark destination, so the stored alt no longer parses as a link. On save, the nested link is re-parsed as plain text and is lost.

Trigger: open a Markdown image whose alt contains a link with an angle-form destination that has a space, such as ![[notes](<my notes.md>)](/x.png), then save it.

Consequence: the alt is stored as [notes](my notes.md). alt_markdown_to_nodes re-parses that string as text, so the saved Markdown no longer contains the link.

Suggested fix in the NodeValue::Link arm of collect_alt_markdown. Apply the same change to the NodeValue::Image arm:

Suggested fix
             out.push_str("](");
-            out.push_str(&url);
+            if url.contains(' ') {
+                out.push('<');
+                out.push_str(&url);
+                out.push('>');
+            } else {
+                out.push_str(&url);
+            }

This fix is static. Its reparse behavior follows the CommonMark rule for angle-form destinations. I did not run the code. Add a round-trip test for a nested link with a spaced destination. The existing test_image_alt_markup_roundtrips covers only a nested link without a space.

Update collect_alt_markdown’s NodeValue::Link and NodeValue::Image arms to
