Summary

- Match service names/aliases and SaaS markers inside any squashed merchant substring
+ Match only complete normalized tokens; retain token-set matching for multi-word services

Adds regressions for METAMUCIL and METAL ROOFING LLC false positives, plus META PAY, CURSOR.COM, and multi-word service controls. Implements the token-boundary rule adopted by #3161.

Evidence

  • Before: METAMUCIL and METAL ROOFING LLC matched Meta and appeared SaaS-looking.
  • After: bun test pm-stack/aggregator/test/charges-match.test.ts — 16 pass, 0 fail.

Merge Danger

Door: Two-way

Blast Radius: Low — charge classification only; no matcher catalog or admission changes.

Closes #3048.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Merchant matching now respects whole-word boundaries, reducing matches caused by partial words or accidental substring overlaps.
    • Multi-word service names can still match when their words appear in a different order in the merchant name.
    • MetaPay is now recognized as a SaaS/AI merchant marker.

Walkthrough

Charge matching now requires complete normalized tokens for SaaS markers and service names or aliases. The changes add METAPAY as a marker and tests for false-positive merchants, CURSOR.COM, and multi-word service names.

Explanation

All changed hunks relate to issue #3048.

  • Removal of the squash helper and its two call sites. The squash helper existed only for the substring matching that the issue removes.
  • isSaasLooking and matchService switched to token-set matching. This is the requested change.
  • METAPAY added to SAAS_MARKERS. This keeps the METAPAY* descriptor surfacing as an unmatched SaaS charge after META stops matching by substring. Test 'service and SaaS-marker matches require token boundaries' and test 'normalizeMerchantName' cover the METAPAY case.
  • New tests in test/charges-match.test.ts. These cover the issue's boundary, alias, and multi-word controls.

No unrelated files or behavior changes were shown in the supplied summary.

Residual behavior change, inside issue scope: squashed descriptors that matched a multi-word name by substring (for example, a squashed form of a two-word service name) no longer match. The issue requires whole-token or whole-sequence matching, so this follows from the requested rule. Multi-word entries in SAAS_MARKERS would also no longer match, because the marker check uses single-token set membership. The full SAAS_MARKERS list was not visible in the diff, so this was not verified.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3048 has three acceptance criteria. Code and tests are checked against each.

  1. Token-boundary matching (met). In pm-stack/aggregator/src/charges-match.ts, the squash helper is removed. isSaasLooking now tests set membership of normalized tokens. matchService no longer runs the flattened flat.includes(flatNorm) check. It uses only the token-set path. METAMUCIL and METAL ROOFING LLC no longer match Meta or the META marker. The test file (test/charges-match.test.ts, 'service and SaaS-marker matches require token boundaries') asserts this.

  2. Existing behavior kept and tested (met). The test file covers the ChatGPT alias to OpenAI ('alias match'). It covers CURSOR.COM to Cursor ('Cursor.com still matches the Cursor service'). It covers multi-word token-set matching ('multi-word service names retain token-set matching').

  3. Boundary tests for at least META and one more short marker (not met). The new boundary test covers META only, through METAMUCIL, METAL ROOFING LLC, META PAY, and METAPAY. No test covers a second short marker from SAAS_MARKERS (for example XAI, GROK, or CLINE) with a prefix-containing merchant. The criterion requires this coverage explicitly.

Resolution

Add a boundary test to pm-stack/aggregator/test/charges-match.test.ts for at least one short SaaS marker other than META. Use a merchant whose token contains that marker as a substring (for example, a merchant token that starts with XAI or GROK). Assert that isSaasLooking(normalizeMerchantName(...)) returns false, and that matchCharges does not label or surface the charge as SaaS. Keep the existing charges-match tests passing.

Add a negative token-boundary test for the ChatGPT alias.

The boundary test covers service names and SaaS markers, but no alias. Alias matching uses the same token check as service names. No test asserts that the ChatGPT alias rejects CHATGPTPLUS. A substring-based alias check would pass every test in this file.

Add the split OPEN AI spelling so OpenAI charges keep their attribution.

The token-boundary rule in matchService now rejects a descriptor whose brand is split into two tokens. OPEN AI normalizes to the tokens OPEN and AI. The catalog name OpenAI normalizes to the single token OPENAI, and no alias supplies OPEN AI. Before this change, squashed matching accepted the descriptor. After it, the charge keeps its raw descriptor as its row label. The charge also drops out of the unmatched SaaS attention list, because OPENAI is the only SaaS marker that covers it and the descriptor no longer contains that token.

Add a "Open AI" alias to the OpenAI entry in PROVIDER_ALIASES, or keep an equivalent spelling match. The alias applies only to catalog entries built from pools. A service named OpenAI that comes from the SaaS list gets no provider aliases, so that path needs a separate fix.
