Phase 4: read-only replica world service and spectators (#806) - #4708
Replica restore preserves journaled presence without synthesizing leave events; only JOIN is effective on replicas.
The actor refuses local mutations, events, schedules, ticks, program capability effects, and journal writes. Replica opens replay directory and artifact sidecars without repairing them.
No CLI/configuration or offline admission policy is added; phase 5 task 6699 owns authenticated sidecar refresh and Drew's explicit decision.
Evidence
Before: no replica open/serve path; the durable receiver only persisted and verified journal bytes.
After:cargo test --lib replica — 51 passed; cargo test --lib read_only_ — 4 passed. Includes friend-delegated authorization with no writer actor, nested-group/old-directory replay, checkpoint refusal, the existing session protocol, mutation refusal, offline module restore and Records parity, and unchanged sidecars. Existing friend-delegation and session-contract tests also pass.

Walkthrough
This change adds offline restoration and serving of world replicas. It reconstructs world state from committed journals and directory facts, preserves replica presence, and serves reads through a read-only handle that rejects local mutations.
Changes: Offline replica service
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Read-only directory state pkgs/id/src/artifact.rs, pkgs/id/src/directory.rs
Read-only replay processes complete records without modifying the source files. Directory fact projection includes required accounts, groups, memberships, and friendships.
Journal parsing and replica restoration pkgs/id/src/world/core.rs, pkgs/id/src/world/mod.rs, pkgs/id/src/world/replica.rs
Replica restoration validates journal headers, restores state while retaining presence, applies directory facts, and returns replay data and a cursor.
Replica handles reject local mutations and stop local timers, event delivery, and compaction. Tests cover replica reads, rejected writes, and session behavior.
Replica opening and offline validation pkgs/id/src/world_store.rs
open_replica restores a committed journal and directory facts, then serves the world without an append journal or writer-only service configuration. Tests cover offline restoration and unchanged source bytes.
developing-today/code#806 — The change implements journal restoration and offline spectator serving for read-only replicas.
developing-today/code#536 — The change implements the read-replica service described in the transport design.
developing-today/code#2898 — Replica restoration reconstructs capabilities, directory facts, program state, and presence before serving.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 7b340
Resolve replica authorization and valid-group restoration before merging. The new APIs also have read-parity and recovery gaps; current exposure is bounded because production replica configuration is not included.

Apply the checkpoint snapshot, or reject snapshot journals, in serve_replica.
When restored.program carries a checkpoint snapshot, serve_replica replays only the tail into the caller's program and never applies the snapshot. Records and views then omit checkpointed state, while the cursor reports the checkpoint sequence. Refuse snapshot-carrying journals here until the caller restores the snapshot.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/world/replica.rs around lines 212 - 220:
Update serve_replica to reject a restored journal when restored.program carries
a checkpoint snapshot, before replaying events into the caller-provided program.
Preserve the existing replay path for journals without snapshots and return a
clear error directing callers to restore the snapshot first.
The new guard refuses every DirectoryAction on a read-only replica, including View and ReadArtifacts. The added comment says replicas refuse only writes. The serve_replica doc comment says spectator reads serve from restored state. No production code in pkgs/id/src creates a replica at this head, so the impact is latent. Gate the check on actions that change the directory.

Update the guard around self.check_writable() in the DirectoryAction handler so
it rejects only actions that modify directory state, while allowing View and

return for write actions.
Block Records publishing in the replica open path.

Block Records publishing in the replica open path.
open_replica runs the caller's service builder before it clears the writer-only fields. A with_records_store call inside that builder starts spawn_publisher at once. The publisher then reconciles the replica's records into the attached doc. The post-callback clearing does not cover records, and it cannot stop a publisher that is already running. No reviewed caller attaches a store to a replica today, so this is a latent gap, not a current failure.
No safe localized edit is established. Clearing service.records after the callback does not stop the publisher. A correct fix must prevent attachment or spawning before the publisher starts. That change touches the callback contract, so I did not propose a diff.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/world_store.rs around lines 575 - 583:
Update the open_replica flow so a caller-provided service builder cannot attach
a records store or start spawn_publisher before replica restrictions are
applied. Establish a safe callback contract or equivalent mechanism that
prevents publisher startup for replicas; do not rely on clearing service.records
afterward, since the publisher may already be running.
The repository convention in pkgs/id/AGENTS.md requires test names to start with test_. The new test replica_facts_create_nested_groups_before_memberships_and_replay_old_names does not. Rename it to test_replica_facts_create_nested_groups_before_memberships_and_replay_old_names. This is a naming fix only. It has no runtime effect.

implementation.
Add tests for the group-projection refusals in replicafactsfor.
Add tests for the group-projection refusals in replica_facts_for.
The new test covers only a contiguous group chain with a shared founder. The projection refuses two topologies that the writer admits: a subject-relevant group whose only admin is inherited through a nested group, and a skipped group ID before a subject's relevant group. No test exercises either refusal. Add one test for each topology that asserts the expected error from replica_facts_for.

Add two tests for the refusal paths in replica_facts_for: one where a
subject-relevant group has its only admin inherited through a nested group, and
one where a skipped group ID precedes the subject’s relevant group. Build each
topology with the writer’s create_group flow and assert the corresponding
existing error without changing projection behavior.
Rename the new replica test to use the test prefix.
Rename the new replica test to use the test_ prefix.
The new test verified_replica_opens_offline_and_matches_writer_records_without_mutating_journal does not start with test_. The project's naming rule for tests requires that prefix. Renaming it to test_verified_replica_opens_offline_and_matches_writer_records_without_mutating_journal follows the rule. The same file has about 50 other tests without the prefix, so the rename does not match the file's current style.
As per coding guidelines: "Naming: Functions snake_case (commands prefixed cmd_), types PascalCase, constants SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE, tests test_ prefix."

Both follow-ups in this review body are addressed: serve_replica rejects checkpoint snapshots unless restored by the durable open path, and read-only replicas allow DirectoryAction::View/ReadArtifacts while refusing local directory mutations. Fixed in 43269fe.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@dezren39 Thanks for confirming both fixes in 43269fe: checkpoint snapshot rejection in serve_replica, and directory read access without local directory mutations on read-only replicas.

Codex P2 findings on PR #4708:
- directory: defer founder MemberSet downgrades in replica_facts_for
until all memberships exist, so a founder with direct Read and
inherited Admin no longer leaves the group admin-less mid-restore.
- world_session: module_bytes falls back to the module directory when
there is no blob pin, so a read-only replica (blob store cleared,
uploads refused) still serves its restored module to spectators.
Regression tests for both behaviors.
The origin/main merge took the main-side System-event arm, which tracks open_presence as a set via record_admin_history, and silently dropped the branch-side per-participant session counting that replica restore returns in RestoredWorld.presence. Restore the counting alongside the set tracking. Also fix a borrow-after-move in the founder deferral.
