Summary

UDP receive
reap idle peers at a 5s minimum cadence during traffic
admit at most 64 peers per listen socket; log and drop excess sources
CONNECT-UDP accept
reserve one of 64 session slots before spawning
log and close excess connections; release the slot when the session returns

Adds pinning tests for the caps, refusal behavior, and reap cadence.

Evidence

  • Before: the recorded 150-source probe opened about 151 sessions (forwarder 153 threads; endpoint 303 threads).
  • After: probe-udp-peers control (one source × 50 datagrams) stayed at one session; 150-source flood stayed at 64 established sessions (forwarder 66 threads; endpoint 129 threads; 128 ss rows count both ends); echo received.
  • cargo test -p fleet-proxy — 63 library tests + 14 bin tests passed; doc tests passed. cargo fmt --check --package fleet-proxy and cargo build -p fleet-proxy --bins passed.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Blast Radius: narrow — fleet-proxy UDP forwarding and CONNECT-UDP endpoint admission only. The caps may reject excess bursts; reverting this PR restores the unbounded behavior.

Fixes #6152. Queue task 9947.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • UDP forwarding now limits each listening socket to 64 active peers and checks for expired peers at least every five seconds during sustained traffic.
    • Excess incoming connections are closed when the 64-session limit is reached. New UDP sources are refused and their datagrams dropped when the peer limit is full.

Walkthrough

The UDP forwarder now limits peers per listen socket and reaps peers during sustained traffic. The CONNECT-UDP endpoint now limits concurrent sessions per listener and closes connections that exceed the limit.

Changes: UDP session and peer limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Forwarder peer admission and reaping
pkgs/fleet/crates/fleet-proxy/src/udp_forward.rs
The datagram path reaps peers at five-second intervals during incoming traffic. It drops datagrams from new sources when the peer limit is reached. Tests cover reap timing, admission rules, and the limit on echoed sources.
Endpoint session admission
pkgs/fleet/crates/fleet-proxy/src/connect_udp.rs
serve uses a default limit of 64 concurrent sessions. The accept loop closes connections that exceed the configured limit without spawning a worker. A test checks that an extra connection receives EOF.

[#6152] The forwarder documents and enforces 64 peers per listen socket, logs excess sources, and reaps during traffic. The endpoint reserves one of 64 session slots before spawning and closes excess connections. Tests cover cap admission, refusal, cadence, and echo forwarding. The PR reports a one-source control, a 150-source probe at 64 sessions, and a passing cargo test run.

Release session slots during unwinding.

If the OS permits a session thread but cannot create its UDP relay thread, serve_session panics and leaks its slot. After 64 such failures, the endpoint refuses all connections even after thread capacity recovers. Use a drop guard to release each slot on return or unwind.

Reclaim dead peers before refusing new sources.

When the table is full, a dead peer can occupy a slot until the next reap. A new source then loses its datagram even though session capacity is available. Reclaim dead peers before refusing admission, while keeping cleanup work bounded under sustained traffic.

Synchronize the peer-cap test before counting replies.

If a session handshake is slow, its source can time out before its echo arrives. The test never revisits that socket, so it can fail even when the cap works. Coordinate admitted round trips before counting replies, while keeping a bounded check for excess sources.
