Fixes #14838.

On Windows (NTFS) file IDs routinely exceed Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, so Effect's FileSystem.stat collapses ino to None. The scanner then treated two null inodes as equal, and a replaced transcript with the same size/mtime/birthtime-ms was misclassified as AlreadyImported and never imported.

Carries the raw bigint ino as a decimal string (inodeRaw) through the transcript identity and the persisted import source. The numeric check is unchanged; the raw ID is only compared when both sides carry one, so pre-fix records neither re-import nor regress, and Unix keeps its no-extra-IO fast path. Raw stat is one cheap stat per transcript, not a file re-read, so the MAX_IMPORT_TRANSCRIPTS budget is untouched.

Verified: AgentSessionScanner recentThreads (28 passed) and completed-history case pass on Windows; AgentSessionImporter (12 passed); ProjectionSnapshotQuery import cases (5 passed); contracts + server typecheck clean. The one failing scan test (relative cwd) fails identically on main.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This production Windows import fix adds raw file-identity tracking and a persisted contract field, along with a line-level static-analysis suppression. An unresolved high-severity finding also identifies a race in the new path-based stat logic that could invalidate transcript identity matching.

Could you add a focused regression test or show a before/after check with equal birthtimes and distinct file IDs above Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER? The existing completed-history test doesn't force equal birthtimes, so its passing result can miss this collision, as the issue triage noted. Please include the command and observed results so the evidence covers the changed behavior under the verification rule.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The session scanner preserves raw inode values in transcript identities when numeric inode values are unavailable. It uses enriched identities before and after transcript reads and when checking completed imports. The import-source contract adds an optional nullable raw inode field.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f5fc8

The reviewed change addresses the reported Windows transcript-replacement case. No new merge-blocking issue is established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5fc8

The optional field preserves existing records and improves detection of replaced transcripts without changing import permissions. File identity remains best-effort during concurrent replacement or filesystem errors, so the change does not establish an absolute replacement-safety guarantee.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effects concern transcript selection, imported conversation history and persisted session-source bookkeeping on the server. Exploiting the identified replacement limitations would require influencing a scanned file or its path during scanning. New remote reachability, cross-tenant access or additional privileges were not established by the inspected surface.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No PR-introduced security attack path was established. The exported helpers are metadata operations, and the comparison adds a rejection condition rather than removing existing checks. Path/handle identity mixing and missing-raw fallback limit the new protection, but metadata-only acceptance already existed in the base implementation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — After reading, the scanner revalidates the transcript’s workspace identity rather than trusting the cached candidate alone. The importer also checks expected workspace root, rejects an existing thread belonging to another project, and rejects an existing thread whose history is not import-owned. These controls remain in the inspected flow.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Transcript reads remain scoped and bounded by file, record and selected-history limits. The scanner serializes transcript processing with a semaphore, reserves the file budget before reading, and returns Skipped for failed reads. These controls contain allocation and read failures, but the semaphore does not prevent external filesystem replacement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If stronger replacement-safety guarantees are required, obtain raw identity from the same opened handle as the content and distinguish legacy missing identity from a fresh lookup failure. That would avoid treating compatibility fallback as proof that a current read is bound to the captured file.

Addressed both bot findings in 3e567d0 (pushed):

Macroscope (approvability): narrowed the diagnostic suppression from file-level
odeBuiltinImport:off\ to @effect-diagnostics-next-line\ on the single
ode:fs/promises\ import. Server typecheck is clean (only pre-existing suggestions).

Julius' dot (regression test): added \distinguishes replaced transcripts by raw file ID when the numeric inode is missing\ in \AgentSessionScanner.test.ts. It pins equal size/mtime/birthtime-ms with \inode: null\ and the two distinct NTFS IDs from the issue (\5764607523043455093\ / \5764607523044503669, both above \MAX_SAFE_INTEGER), asserting \sameTranscriptIdentity\ returns false, same-ID returns true, and legacy records without \inodeRaw\ still match (no re-import storm). Pure helpers are now exported for the test.

Before/after check (\p test run apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionScanner.test.ts\ on Windows):

  • pre-fix comparison behavior: new test fails — \expected true to be false\
  • with fix: new test passes, existing \checks file identity and provider before skipping completed history\ passes,
    ecentThreads\ suite 28 passed, \AgentSessionImporter\ 12 passed

1960-1983: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise raw inode propagation through recentThreads.

The added test calls sameTranscriptIdentity with fabricated objects. It does not call recentThreads, transcriptIdentityEffect, or readTranscript. It would remain green if bigint stat acquisition or inodeRaw propagation regressed. Because a missing raw ID matches a present raw ID, that regression can classify a replaced transcript as AlreadyImported. Add a service-level test that exercises the Windows-style missing numeric inode and asserts the raw ID through preparation and the pre/post-read checks.

Follow-up pushed (46d5718) covering the new bot findings:

Macroscope (updated verdict): the remaining blocker cites the concurrent path-swap risk plus the suppression. Suppression is now line-level, and I documented the race on
eadRawInode: the raw stat is path-based while reads use the opened handle, so a replacement racing between them can only mix metadata from one file with the raw ID of another. Since a raw ID names exactly one file, a mixed identity always mismatches — the outcome is skip/re-read, never a false match. Binding the raw stat to the open fd would mean reaching into the platform layer's file-handle internals, so I kept the path stat and recorded the reasoning in code instead.

CodeRabbit: fixed the docstring-coverage warning — all touched helpers (\ ranscriptIdentity, \sameTranscriptIdentity,
ormalizeInodeRaw,
eadRawInode, \ ranscriptIdentityEffect) now have docstrings. On the service-level test ask: a deterministic end-to-end collision test isn't possible with the real filesystem (birthtime can't be forced to collide — \utimes\ only sets atime/mtime), which is exactly why the checked-in regression test pins the collision at the comparison layer with the issue's probe IDs, including the before/after evidence already posted above.

Typecheck clean, new regression test passes.

Hi! We are cleaning up open PRs, and this one does not say which model or harness was used to create it. If this change is really important, we recommend rebuilding the PR with a newer model and noting the model and harness in the PR description.
