fix(providers): allow a separate CLI path for updates - #23890
When Codex or Claude's Binary path points to a launcher for routing or account setup, Update now resolves installation ownership from that launcher. It can disable the update action or invoke the launcher with update, even though the underlying CLI has a supported installation. A launcher that expects session configuration can fail when invoked for maintenance.
Changes
Add an optional Maintenance binary path for Codex and Claude. Sessions keep their configured Binary path; version advisories and Update now resolve the explicitly selected CLI through the existing installation resolver. For example, a session can use ~/bin/codex-launcher while updates target ~/.local/bin/codex.
The drivers expand the maintenance path on the destination server. Existing installation ownership checks, fresh resolution, update locks and verification through the session binary remain in place. An empty override uses the session binary again; a missing explicit path yields no update action. The shared settings schema exposes the option in web/desktop Settings, and the user guide explains how to configure or clear it. Mobile uses the same server-side update execution; its account settings do not expose this advanced path.
Bun global updates now require the selected executable to resolve inside the expected package under the adjacent .bun/install/global directory. The action sets BUN_INSTALL_GLOBAL_DIR and BUN_INSTALL_BIN to that installation, and includes its global directory in the lock key. An unproven layout, wrapper or link to another package/project is manual-only. Explicit-version updates preserve these bindings. Custom global layouts that cannot be proven remain manual-only.
When a maintenance path is selected, Codex and Claude update advisories probe that CLI's version rather than using the session launcher's version. The lookup is deferred until update checks are enabled; missing, failed or unparseable maintenance probes produce an unknown advisory. The runner also uses the maintenance version for its pre-update current-version check, so a current session launcher cannot suppress an update to an older selected CLI. The provider snapshot's version and installedVersion remain tied to the session executable, and post-update verification retains its session-version comparison.
Scope and approval
This uses CONTRIBUTING.md's focused configuration route for an established capability: choosing which installed executable the existing Codex/Claude updater maintains. It addresses launcher-backed provider updates without adding a provider, installer, update scheduler or new default behavior. The contract, two driver call sites, shared resolver, regression and user guide all support that one option. Searches for existing maintenance-path and launcher-update reports found no matching open PR or issue.
Evidence
The pre-update verification finding was confirmed. The runner re-enriched its precheck with the session version and could incorrectly skip an older selected CLI. Extending the existing runner test table reproduced the issue before the fix. The table now verifies that an older maintenance CLI triggers an update despite a current session, a current maintenance CLI skips despite an older session, and a stale session after the update still produces the existing unchanged result.
The advisory eligibility finding was confirmed: a launcher reporting the latest version hid an older selected maintenance CLI. The new regression failed before the fix and now covers Codex/Claude version output, failed/unparseable/missing maintenance executables, skipped probes when checks are disabled, and unchanged session snapshot versions. A disposable shell-CLI execution (synthetic versions, no live provider installation) produced:
An isolated macOS arm64 execution used Bun 1.3.3 (official release asset, SHA-256 verified), a loopback registry serving synthetic package versions, and two disposable global installations. The real resolver's update action overrode conflicting child defaults and global bunfig paths:
No live provider installation was changed. The existing Bun regression failed before the fix because the command lacked the selected environment and installation lock; it passes with the fix, including rejection of wrappers and links into another package or local project.
A disposable fixture used a runtime wrapper that rejects update but forwards --version to a native CLI. This is fixture execution on macOS, not a live provider upgrade:
The regression asserts the maintenance executable/arguments independently from the runtime wrapper, refusal of a missing override, and fallback when it is cleared. The original regression failed before the resolver change because it selected the wrapper instead of the native executable.
The shared settings form was checked in headless Chromium with synthetic launcher/native paths. The before capture uses upstream 11adcb0e; the after capture uses this patch. Both provider overrides could be entered and cleared while their Binary paths stayed on the launchers. These are component fixtures using the real form and stylesheet, not full-app or packaged-desktop captures. The fixture and reproduction notes are attached separately from the source patch.

Single-commit head c5fb88f70c405061afdc71c15ec108f1b494bbce, rebased onto upstream 7195b699547b538e49f758e314dde5c8c5d907cf:
vp run check:changed 7195b699547b538e49f758e314dde5c8c5d907cf passed formatting, lint, both Knip passes, generated GraphQL checks, type checks for 35 affected packages and 158 tests in five files.
Resolved the Bun update-environment conflict by preserving upstream's provider environment and overriding only the selected Bun global and binary directories. The existing Bun regression now also asserts the provider environment is retained. git diff --check passed.
Before this rebase, Claude Opus 5.5 at high effort reviewed the pre-update fix and relevant PR context with no actionable findings, and independently passed all 31 runner tests. That review was not repeated for this rebase.
Earlier failing-before-fix regressions, advisory/native-updater/Bun fixtures and browser captures remain labeled above; those external fixtures and captures were not rerun for this rebase.
Full-app settings navigation, native Windows/Linux execution and a packaged desktop build remain unverified. Shell-fixture regressions use the existing Windows/symlink skip boundaries. CI owns the full test suites, build and release smoke checks.

Problem
When Codex or Claude's Binary path points to a launcher for routing or account setup, Update now resolves installation ownership from that launcher. It can disable the update action or invoke the launcher with
update, even though the underlying CLI has a supported installation. A launcher that expects session configuration can fail when invoked for maintenance.Changes
Add an optional Maintenance binary path for Codex and Claude. Sessions keep their configured Binary path; version advisories and Update now resolve the explicitly selected CLI through the existing installation resolver. For example, a session can use
~/bin/codex-launcherwhile updates target~/.local/bin/codex.The drivers expand the maintenance path on the destination server.
Bun global updates now require the selected executable to resolve inside the expected package under the adjacent
.bun/install/globaldirectory. The action setsBUN_INSTALL_GLOBAL_DIRandBUN_INSTALL_BINto that installation, and includes its global directory in the lock key. An unproven layout, wrapper or link to another package/project is manual-only. Explicit-version updates preserve these bindings. Custom global layouts that cannot be proven remain manual-only.When a maintenance path is selected, Codex and Claude update advisories probe that CLI's version rather than using the session launcher's version. The lookup is deferred until update checks are enabled; missing, failed or unparseable maintenance probes produce an unknown advisory. The runner also uses the maintenance version for its pre-update current-version check, so a current session launcher cannot suppress an update to an older selected CLI. The provider snapshot's
versionandinstalledVersionremain tied to the session executable, and post-update verification retains its session-version comparison.Scope and approval

The pre-update verification finding was confirmed. The runner re-enriched its precheck with the session version and could incorrectly skip an older selected CLI.
