fix(server): native Claude updates use the native release feed - #27958
Claude can stay stuck on an update warning after claude update says it is current. T3 compares native installs against npm releases that the native channel has not promoted yet.
Change
Use the native latest or stable feed for native installations, following the user and file-based managed channel settings in the updater's config directory. Cache the channels separately. Failed or invalid feed responses report an unknown version, so they cannot fall back to a misleading npm version. Package-managed installations keep their existing checks.
Scope and approval
Fixes#27942. This is a focused correction to the version source used by the existing update check. Related PR #26518 addresses the stable channel using npm's stable tag, which can also lead the native feed.
Verification
Checked on macOS:
Before the fix, the regression test classified native 2.1.314 as behind npm 2.1.316; the expected result was current at native 2.1.314.
All 13 Claude maintenance tests passed. Coverage includes both channels, npm installations, managed overrides, channel changes, invalidation, malformed/unavailable feeds, a stalled response body, and disabled checks. The existing managed-override case now runs with Linux, macOS, and Windows platform values, including the default and custom Program Files paths. Both Windows cases failed before the path correction; all platform cases pass afterward. These Windows cases are simulated on macOS.
vp run check:changed --concurrency 2 passed formatting, lint, knip, GraphQL validation, typechecks for 25 affected packages and dependents, and its 78 selected tests.
A runtime probe with an isolated synthetic native executable and Anthropic's live feeds reported latest 2.1.314 and stable 2.1.308 as current. No update command ran.
No client code changed. Windows and Linux hosts were not run locally. macOS MDM and Windows registry policies are outside this fix; channel detection reads settings files.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Native Claude update notices now use the vendor's release feed and channel-specific caching while preserving the existing update command. The Windows managed-settings finding remains subject to the separate correctness gate.

Walkthrough
Claude maintenance resolution now checks the native release feed for the configured channel on native installs. The Claude driver passes the effective binary path and required services to the resolver. Channel-specific cache keys distinguish advisory results for different channels.
Maintenance capabilities can specify a latest-version cache key. The resolver uses it before deriving a key from other capability fields.
Native channel and release lookup apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeMaintenance.ts, apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeDriver.ts
A dedicated resolver identifies native installs, reads the update channel from settings, and retrieves a validated version from the matching release feed. Package-managed installs use the shared resolver. The Claude driver supplies the effective binary path and required services.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Objective [#27942] is met. Native Claude installations resolve latest or stable from the native release feed. The channel uses user settings, managed settings, and sorted managed-settings drop-ins. The default is latest. Each feed has a separate cache key. Invalid, unavailable, non-OK, or timed-out responses return null, so the resolver does not fall back to npm. Package-managed installations retain the shared npm resolver. The added tests cover both channels, channel changes, overrides, cache behavior, invalid feeds, stalled responses, and disabled checks.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#27942]. ClaudeDriver.ts delegates maintenance resolution to the Claude-specific resolver. The shared maintenance resolver adds the channel cache-key support required for separate native feeds. The tests cover the new native feed behavior and existing package-managed behavior. No unrelated product behavior appears in the reviewed changes.

reproduced on github/main (54c5f25249) in a separate worktree after vp i. with the real native stable binary 2.1.309 and autoUpdatesChannel: "stable", settings > providers showed an update warning although the real claude update reported it was current.
checked out the exact pr head, ran vp i, and started a single background dev server with an explicit isolated home. drove the real web client with the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. on the same binary and settings, the server websocket snapshot reported current, latest 2.1.309, and the claude update warning disappeared.
changed the actual claude settings file between latest and stable. manual refresh and automatic refresh both selected the correct live feed without a restart. latest advertised 2.1.316; stable advertised 2.1.309. automatic stable refresh changed the advisory from behind_latest to current at the next 30-second health check.
clicked the app's "update now" action on the latest channel. it ran the real native updater, installed 2.1.316, refreshed the displayed version, and cleared the warning. the native cli also reported 2.1.316 afterward.
selected the real npm installation through the binary-path control while the native channel was stable. it still compared installed 2.1.316 against npm 2.1.316, with the npm update command, rather than the native stable feed.
added the real git worktree as a project through the app, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, sent a real turn through the local proxy, and received the requested response. no replay provider, mocks, fixtures, or demo data were used for these runtime checks.
blacksmith: vp test run apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeMaintenance.test.ts packages/provider-core/src/server/maintenanceResolver.test.ts passed all 78 tests. the pr's existing 29 check contexts were successful in cafe status.

authenticated claude conversation turns: the native cli has no claude login on this vm. its version detection, live update feeds, and native updater were exercised without login.
native desktop/mobile clients, macos/windows hosts, remote relay/tunnel connections, and platform policy stores: this pass used the linux web client.
live managed-settings overrides, feed outages, malformed responses, and stalled response bodies were not induced. those branches passed the existing focused tests, which is separate from runtime proof.
