fix(server): native Claude on the stable update channel stops reporting a false update - #26518
A native Claude Code install whose settings set "autoUpdatesChannel": "stable" was always compared against npm's latest dist-tag. claude update follows the stable channel, finds nothing newer, and exits 0, so Update now always ended with "Update command completed, but T3 Code still detects an outdated provider version." and the update badge never went away.
Reproduced on main 2a73827 with the official native installer (Claude Code 2.1.308 in a scratch HOME, ~/.claude/settings.json = {"autoUpdatesChannel":"stable"}) while npm's dist-tags were stable: 2.1.308, latest: 2.1.312. Settings → Providers offered a Claude update; every Update now printed the error above and installed nothing. Switching the setting to "latest" made the same button install 2.1.312.
Change
For the native claude update path only, the Claude driver now reads the channel claude update itself follows each time maintenance resolves:
managed settings first (managed-settings.json, then managed-settings.d/*.json in name order, last value wins), then the user settings.json in the server's Claude config dir ($CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR or ~/.claude; the updater runs with the server's env, not the instance's homePath);
"stable" → the native capabilities get a lookupLatestVersion that reads npm's stable dist-tag, with latestVersion: null (Homebrew's pattern), so a failed stable lookup reports "unknown" instead of falling back to latest;
Because the channel is read at resolve time, a manual refresh or an update picks up a channel switch, and the installer-key cache only ever holds stable answers. Provider-core gains an optional nativeUpdate.lookupLatestVersion and a dist-tag argument on fetchNpmLatestVersion; npm, pnpm, bun, Homebrew and other installs are untouched.
apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeDriver.test.ts (new file), 6 tests: stable channel → compared against stable (red on main: behind_latest / 2.1.312, expected current / 2.1.308); latest channel → latest; managed latest over user stable; managed drop-in overrides the base managed file; channel switch followed by a fresh resolution with the same version cache; /stable 503 → unknown, /latest never requested. Each of the last four was red on the head before its fix.
On the merged head 3927a1d: ClaudeDriver, ClaudeHome, ProviderRegistry and maintenanceResolver tests 100/100; typecheck clean in packages/provider-core and apps/server. vp run check:changed passed format, lint and graphql, then hit a 30-minute limit on a heavily loaded VM; knip and dependent-package typechecks are left to CI.
Runtime check in the real web app (dev server with a fresh database, native Claude 2.1.308 in a scratch HOME, live npm registry with stable 2.1.308 / latest 2.1.312):
After-fix transcript on da17a0e: channel stable → Claude 2.1.308 with no update ("Update 1 provider", the other being Codex). Settings switched to "latest" → Refresh → Claude update offered ("Update 2 providers") → Update now installed 2.1.312, no error.
Not checked: macOS MDM and Windows registry managed policies are not read (an MDM-pinned channel that conflicts with the file-based managed settings is resolved from the files); macOS and Windows hosts were not run. No UI code changed, so no diff images.

…s compared against npm latest
A native Claude install whose settings.json sets autoUpdatesChannel "stable"
updates to npm's stable dist-tag, but T3 compares it against latest, so it
offers an update that `claude update` never installs. This test pins the
advisory to the stable release and fails on main.

…npm's stable release
`claude update` follows `autoUpdatesChannel` in Claude's user settings.json, so a
native install on "stable" is never moved past npm's stable dist-tag. T3 compared
it against `latest` and offered an update that could never take effect.
The native update definition can now supply a latest-version lookup when its
capabilities resolve. Claude's reads the channel from the config dir the update
actually runs with (the server env's CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, else ~/.claude) and, on
"stable", looks up npm's stable dist-tag through the existing registry fetch. It
is cached under the installer key, apart from the bare `latest` entry, and the
existing post-update invalidation clears it. Any other channel, or a missing or
invalid file, keeps comparing against `latest`.

…ailed stable lookup stays unknown
Managed settings override the user's `autoUpdatesChannel`, so a managed
`latest` over a user `stable` was compared against the wrong release. When
the stable lookup failed, the resolver fell back to npm latest and brought
back the false update warning.
The native update hook is now a plain `lookupLatestVersion` that ships with
`latestVersion: null`, as Homebrew's does, so its failure means unknown. The
Claude lookup reads managed-settings.json from the directory shared with
managed-mcp.json, then the user's settings.json, at lookup time.

…op-ins
The channel is now read each time maintenance capabilities resolve, so a
manual refresh after switching channels picks it up. Only the stable channel
attaches an installer lookup; every other channel uses the npm `latest` path
exactly as before, so the two answers never share a cache entry. Managed
`managed-settings.d/*.json` drop-ins are merged after the base file in name
order, last value wins. `hasClaudeManagedMcpConfig` is back to main's code.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Native Claude update notices now follow the configured stable channel instead of comparing against the latest release. Existing update commands and product defaults remain unchanged, keeping the impact limited to version discovery and reporting.

Claude maintenance advisories now use the configured update channel to look up the matching npm version. Managed Claude settings take precedence over user settings, and tests cover channel selection and advisory results.

Explanation
Objective [#26400]: native Claude update checks must follow the configured channel, or avoid offering an update the native updater cannot apply. Implementation at head: (1) ClaudeDriver.ts reads autoUpdatesChannel on each maintenance resolution. Managed files are read first (managed-settings.json, then managed-settings.d/*.json sorted by name, last defined value wins). If no managed value exists, the user settings.json under the server's resolved Claude config dir is read. (2) When the channel is "stable", the resolver uses nativeUpdate.lookupLatestVersion = fetchNpmLatestVersion("@anthropic-ai/claude-code", "stable"). (3) maintenanceResolver.ts sets latestVersion to null when lookupLatestVersion is present, so a failed stable lookup yields an unknown result instead of falling back to latest. (4) Any other value, or a missing or invalid setting, uses the unchanged UPDATE resolver. The npm URL now uses the encoded dist-tag, and the default remains "latest". Automated coverage is claimed in ClaudeDriver.test.ts (6 tests: stable vs latest selection, managed precedence, drop-in override, channel switch with fresh resolution, stable 503 yields unknown without requesting /latest). I did not execute these tests. Non-coding items (manual runtime check, screenshots) are not assessed. Not read by the code path: macOS MDM and Windows registry managed policies. The issue does not require them. No unmet coding requirement found.

Explanation
Changed areas at head: ClaudeDriver.ts (channel detection and stable-channel resolver for native Claude only), ClaudeHome.ts (adds the ClaudeManagedConfigDirectory context reference used to locate managed settings), maintenanceResolver.ts in provider-core (optional nativeUpdate.lookupLatestVersion and a distTag parameter on fetchNpmLatestVersion, which defaults to "latest"), and the new ClaudeDriver.test.ts. Each change supports the native Claude channel objective in [#26400]. The provider-core change is generic but inert unless lookupLatestVersion is supplied, and only the Claude driver supplies it. Non-native install paths (npm, pnpm, bun, Homebrew) keep their prior resolver. No unrelated behavior change was found in the diffs reviewed. Limit: I read the ClaudeDriver.ts and maintenanceResolver.ts diffs directly. ClaudeHome.ts and the test file were assessed from the supplied summary only.

npm's stable dist-tag doesn't match what claude update installs either, so this PR can still report a false update. The mismatch also shows up on the default latest channel, not only on stable.
claude update reads the native release bucket that https://claude.ai/install.sh uses (DOWNLOAD_BASE_URL="https://downloads.claude.ai/claude-code-releases"), not npm. At 2026-10-31 02:15 UTC:
latest: npm 2.1.316, bucket 2.1.314. With no autoUpdatesChannel set, main reports behind_latest and Update now fails with "still detects an outdated provider version". We hit this on three Linux and macOS hosts with native installs:
$ ~/.local/bin/claude update
Current version: 2.1.314
Checking for updates to latest version...
Claude Code is up to date (2.1.314)
stable: npm 2.1.309, bucket 2.1.308. With this PR, a stable-channel install on 2.1.308 would still be offered 2.1.309, which claude update can't install.
Our fork compares native installs against downloads.claude.ai/claude-code-releases/<channel> instead, using the same nativeUpdate.lookupLatestVersion hook and latestVersion: null this PR adds. The bucket answers with a plain version string, and a failed or non-version response counts as unknown. After deploying it, all three hosts report current at 2.1.314. We don't read the managed settings, so the channel logic in this PR would still apply on top of that.
Closing in favor of the native-feed fix, which checks both native channels and honors managed-file overrides. This npm-based check still reports an update when npm leads the native release. #27958#26518 comment
