feat: ship a self-updating .rpm and import exported CLI transcripts - #27644
Fedora and openSUSE users only get the AppImage; there is no .rpm.
An AppImage started beside an installed .deb points the t3code:// handler (used for sign-in links) and the t3 launcher back at itself. Deleting the AppImage then breaks both until the package is opened again.
A conversation exported with the coding CLI's /export command (a .txt transcript) cannot be brought into a project and continued.
Change
.rpm next to the AppImage and .deb
build-desktop-artifact.ts adds rpm to the Linux targets of the same electron-builder run, with Fedora/openSUSE rich dependencies, the metainfo, and the license. The preflight checks for rpmbuild.
The release workflows install rpm on the Linux runners and publish *.rpm.
DesktopUpdates accepts package-typerpm, so electron-updater's RpmUpdater updates it through dnf or zypper, as the .deb updates through dpkg.
electron-builder's stock after-remove script runs as the old package's %postun. During an upgrade, rpm runs that after the new package's %post, so every rpm update would delete /usr/bin/t3code (and the AppArmor profile on openSUSE). The .rpm ships apps/desktop/resources/linux/rpm-after-remove.sh, which only cleans up on erase ($1 = 0).
AppImage beside a package
DesktopLinuxPackage detects an installed .deb/.rpm of the same channel through /opt/<productName>/resources/package-type.
When one is present, the AppImage points the URL handler entry (pre-ready and DesktopLinuxUrlHandler) and the t3 shim at the package. These are byte-identical to what the package writes itself, so the two installs stop rewriting each other.
Transcript import
New agentSessions.importTranscript RPC, guarded by the orchestration operate scope (CLIENT_GUARDED_RPC_SCOPES).
The server parses the text without a model:
Prompts and replies are kept verbatim.
Tool calls, tool output, thinking and local commands are dropped.
It keeps the first prompt plus the newest messages, 200 in total, like the existing conversation import.
The thread is written like other imported history: historyOrigin: "v1_import" with no native session, so the next message hands the history over.
Entry points are the project's sidebar menu and a command palette submenu. Both open a dialog where you pick or drop the file. The text crosses the wire once, so it works over remote connections. Mobile is not included.
Docs: install guide, README, release and development docs, the download page, and a short user-guide section.
Scope and approval
There is no prior Ideas discussion or maintainer approval. These are two independent changes in one PR, at the author's request. I'm happy to split it into (1) .rpm plus the AppImage handoff and (2) transcript import, or to move either one to an Ideas discussion first.
Verification
Ran:
The rpm after-remove script, run under bash with a stubbed update-alternatives:
The same check is added as a test in scripts/build-desktop-artifact.test.ts.
The transcript parser, run on Node 22 against its test fixtures:
A banner, tool call, thinking block, compaction separator, hook output, /model, CRLF line endings, and Windows ●, all parsed as expected.
Empty and prompt-less files are rejected.
The 200-message cap keeps the first prompt.
Every changed .ts file parses.
CI: Lint, Build and Typecheck, Test, Test Web, all eight Test Server shards, Rust and Release Smoke pass on the latest commit. These include the tests listed below. The vp toolchain was not available locally, so CI was the first full run. The first run caught two formatting issues, which are fixed.
Not checked:
Building an .rpm, or installing and upgrading it on Fedora.
The AppImage-to-package handoff on a real desktop.
The import dialog in a running client. There are no screenshots yet.
Tests added or extended:
Parser cases.
Importer service test: thread created with the messages, no provider thread, unreadable file rejected.
URL handler handoff for deb, rpm and an unrelated marker.
Fedora and openSUSE users only had the AppImage. The Linux release build
now also packs an .rpm in the same electron-builder run as the AppImage
and .deb, the release publishes it, and the app updates it through
electron-updater like the .deb.
electron-builder's stock after-remove script runs as the old package's
%postun, which rpm executes after the new package's %post during an
upgrade, so every rpm update would have deleted /usr/bin/t3code. The .rpm
ships its own script that only cleans up on erase.
An AppImage started beside an installed .deb or .rpm of the same channel
used to point the t3code:// handler and the t3 command back at itself,
which broke both once the AppImage was deleted. It now points them at the
package, writing the same entries the package writes.
A conversation saved with the coding CLI's /export command could not be
continued in T3 Code. A project's sidebar menu and the command palette now
offer an import that takes the .txt file, picked or dropped, and opens it
as a new thread in that project.
The server parses the transcript without a model: it keeps prompts and
replies verbatim, drops tool calls, tool output, thinking and local
commands, and keeps the first prompt plus the newest messages, 200 in
total, as the existing conversation import does. The thread has no native
session, so the next message hands the history over like a migrated
thread. The file's text crosses the wire once, so it works over remote
connections. The RPC is guarded by the orchestration operate scope.

Claude Code Transcript Import
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Transcript parsing and import contracts packages/contracts/src/agentSessions.ts, apps/server/src/project/ClaudeExportTranscript.ts, apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionScanner.ts, related tests
Contracts define the transcript size limit, import request and result, and unreadable-transcript error. The parser extracts user and assistant messages, omits tool output and thinking, and limits imported messages to 200.
Server import and RPC wiring packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionImporter.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts, apps/server/src/telemetry/FeatureUsage.ts, related tests
The server import operation validates the project and transcript, creates a settled imported thread with message events, and returns the thread ID and message count. The RPC contract, handler, permissions, and instrumentation include the operation.
Web import flow and guidance apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/TranscriptImportDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/__root.tsx, apps/web/src/state/agentSessions.ts, docs/user/thread-sidebar.md
The command palette and project sidebar offer transcript import when the required scope is available. The dialog accepts a text file or drop, submits its contents, and navigates to the imported thread on success.

Remove enumerateCommandPaletteItems from the import items.
enumerateCommandPaletteItems assigns thread-jump commands to the import rows. While the import submenu is open, handleKeyDown searches its displayed rows for a matching shortcutCommand and executes the match. A mod+number shortcut can therefore start an import.
The root new-thread-in and import-transcript-in entries do not create this collision because their project rows are rendered only after entering the respective submenu.

Subscribe to the import submenu's scope with useEnvironmentsWithScope, not a per-project permissionAtom read.
readEnvironmentScope reads the registry with appAtomRegistry.get, which does not subscribe the component. CommandPalette subscribes only to the scope of browseEnvironmentId (via useEnvironmentScope) and to the triage permission for one environment. A scope change for another project's environment does not re-render the palette. The import submenu can then stay hidden until some other state change causes a render.
A permissionAtom(environmentId) getter is not a hook. Calling useAtomValue for each project inside pickerProjects.filter(...) would vary the hook count between renders. session.ts already exports useEnvironmentsWithScope(environments, scope), which subscribes to every environment's session state in one hook call and returns the set of environments with the scope.
Suggested fix
-import { readEnvironmentScope, useEnvironmentScope } from "~/state/session";+import {+ readEnvironmentScope,+ useEnvironmentScope,+ useEnvironmentsWithScope,+} from "~/state/session";
Place the new hook call at the top level of the component, before any conditional return. Keep readEnvironmentScope in the import, because it is still used at lines 698, 1765, and 1948.

Handle a failed file.text() read.
setImporting(true) runs first. Then file.text() is awaited inside the argument object. If the read rejects, the rejection is unhandled because callers use void importFile(...). importing also stays true. The button stays disabled and importFile returns early on every later call. The user must close and reopen the dialog.
Read the file first and settle the failure. This avoids try/finally, which the React Compiler guidance says to avoid.

Give openSUSE its zypper command.
The heading includes openSUSE, but the only command uses dnf. An openSUSE installation without dnf cannot follow these steps. Add sudo zypper install ./T3-Code-*.rpm for openSUSE, as docs/user/install.md already does. openSUSE documents zypper for installing a local RPM. (doc.opensuse.org)

the one-problem rule and prior-approval rule are unmet. this cumulative diff independently adds RPM distribution/AppImage handoff and exported-transcript import; the description explicitly acknowledges both the independence and absence of approval. please obtain maintainer direction and split those problems into focused submissions. the Fedora/openSUSE distribution gap, competing AppImage handlers, and transcript-continuation need remain useful reports. each replacement also needs verification matched to its behavior: observed package install/update and handoff results for distribution, and before/after client captures plus an exercised import path for the dialog. the description currently says those paths were not checked and screenshots are absent.
