Problem

Cursor thread compaction still went through a /compress user-message rewrite instead of the SDK's native summarize API, so compaction could not stream summary lifecycle updates as first-class turn items.

Change

Wire compactThread to agent.summarize, project summary started/completed into compaction items, fix the stream-pump/callbackChain deadlock, teach the replay testkit summarize, and clear instruction-delivery state after compact so the next turn reinjects orchestration/device prompts.

Scope and approval

Depends on #27906 (SDK 1.2.0 + ambient MCP send restore). This PR only adds native summarize compaction on that foundation. Closed precursor: #26262 (split for one-problem).

Verification

  • vp test run packages/provider-cursor/src/server/adapter.test.ts packages/provider-cursor/src/server/driver.test.ts
  • Prior live check: /compact → run.summarize → summary-started/completed

🟠 High server/adapter.ts:2577

Ordinary startTurn sends that emit summary lifecycle updates drop their final assistant answer when the SDK returns it only in result.result: handleSummaryUpdate sets context.compaction, so this branch records the answer as a compaction summary and skips the assistant fallback. Restrict this path to native summarize runs, or handle the assistant-result fallback independently.

Fixed: startTurn no longer treats result.result as a compaction summary when mid-run summary updates set context.compaction; compactThread keeps its own wait path.

🟡 Medium server/adapter.ts:2879

When summary-completed arrives before sdkRun.wait resolves, result.result is stored in context.compaction.summary but never emitted, leaving consumers with the earlier summary-less compaction item. Because the status is already completed, the running check skips the only emit here; emit an updated item when a non-empty result arrives even if the status is terminal.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds native Cursor compaction and retains ambient MCP/plugin tools alongside T3 tools. A human must confirm that broader default tool availability and its external-system exposure are intended.

Walkthrough

The Cursor provider now uses @cursor/sdk 1.2.0 and exposes native summarize runs. The adapter represents summary lifecycle updates as compaction turn items and passes MCP server options on sends. The changes also update replay support, tests, and Cursor setup documentation.

Changes: Cursor summarization and MCP support

The Cursor SDK dependency is now 1.2.0. The SDK wrapper supports summarize runs, converts summary stream messages to interaction updates, and waits for run and callback processing. Replay support handles the summarize protocol event.
Adapter compaction lifecycle
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/adapter.test.ts
The adapter uses native summarization for compaction and emits compaction turn items from summary lifecycle updates. Tests check summarize calls and completed compaction items.

The adapter includes configured MCP servers in send options. SDK diagnostics record MCP server presence and names. Documentation describes MCP configuration and Cursor setup.

Separate MCP setup from troubleshooting.

The docs/user/** rule applies to this paragraph, but it does not require removing technical details that help users complete or diagnose OAuth setup. The configuration paths, agent mcp login <server> command, credential path, and SDK error messages are actionable for MCP troubleshooting.

Keep the setup steps concise and move the SDK limitations and error messages into a short Troubleshooting note in docs/user/cursor.md. A note does not justify unrelated implementation detail; retain only details that help users configure or diagnose MCP access.

Bump @cursor/sdk to 1.2.0 so send-level mcpServers no longer clears settingSources plugins/project/user MCP, and pass t3-code on each send again.

Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
Replace the /compress rewrite path with agent.summarize, project summary lifecycle into compaction turn items, and clear instruction-delivery state after compact so the next turn reinjects prompts.

Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
Do not treat startTurn result.result as a compaction summary when mid-run summary updates set context.compaction. Emit late summarize wait results, classify usage limits on compact, and cover the stream pump in the SDK runner test.
