fix(shared): cite assistant messages with long IDs - #28088
Cite inserts a raw link instead of a quote chip for assistant message IDs longer than 512 characters.
Change
Allow long thread and message IDs within the existing citation URL limit. Validate selections and edited comments before saving or sending. Show a link-size error and disable Save when a comment exceeds the URL budget. Derive navigation hash limits from the shared URL budget.
Scope and approval
Fixes#28075. Focused repair of an existing Cite failure under the obvious-bug exception.
Alternative to #28084; retains the existing URL budget.
Verification
Long-ID and oversized-comment regressions fail before the fixes and pass afterward, including an ID leaving no room for a one-character comment. Shortening or clearing the comment restores saving. Existing character-limit tests pass.
A citation at the full URL limit, with CJK text and a long message ID, survives navigation and reload.
vp run check:changed passes: formatting, lint, knip, 35 package typechecks, 47 focused tests, and React compiler coverage.
The fix was implemented with GPT-6.1-Sol inside T3 Code with the Codex provider and was audited by Claude Opus 5.5.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Allows assistant citations with longer thread and message IDs while retaining the existing URL-size limit. The toolbar also hides citation actions that cannot produce a parseable link, keeping the change narrowly scoped.

Walkthrough
Assistant citations now support longer thread and message IDs, subject to the citation URL length limit. The composer and selection toolbar validate formatted citation URLs before saving or storing citations.

The schema removes the 512-character limits on thread and message IDs. The shared URL limit is exported, and navigation rejects hashes above a derived maximum. Tests cover varied ID lengths, navigation and reloads, and rejection of a citation with a 160,000-character message ID.
The composer rejects comment updates and citation draft saves when the formatted URL cannot be parsed. The comment editor reports URL validation errors and disables Save. Browser tests cover oversized comments during save, send, and question-mode transitions.
The toolbar checks whether a formatted citation can be parsed before retaining the selection. It then stores the constructed citation in selection state.
Screen reader users may not hear why a comment is invalid when returning to the field. The change is otherwise mergeable with this accessibility issue noted.

Explanation
The title "fix(shared): cite assistant messages with long IDs" names the main change: assistant messages with IDs over 512 characters can now be cited. The raw summary and objectives confirm that the change allows longer thread and message IDs within the existing citation URL limit, and adds validation for selections and edited comments. The title does not mention the comment validation or the navigation hash change, but it does not need to cover every detail. It follows the conventional commit form the template suggests.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #28075 requires long assistant message IDs to produce the normal quote chip and comment field. The citation schema removes the 512-character limits for threadId and messageId while retaining the overall URL limit. AssistantSelectionToolbar validates formatted citations before storing a selection. AssistantCitationCommentEditor and ComposerPromptEditorTiptap reject comments that produce unparsable citation URLs, show an error, and block Save or send. Regression tests cover long IDs, URL-budget failures, recovery after shortening or clearing comments, and maximum-length navigation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #28075. Schema updates, selection validation, comment validation, URL-budget navigation limits, and regression tests directly support reliable long-ID citations and rejection of invalid citations. No unrelated product behavior is shown in the reviewed changes.

onSaveComment returns false when the formatted citation exceeds MAX_CITATION_HREF_LENGTH. AssistantCitationCommentEditor does not represent that state, so Save and save-and-send remain available without feedback.
Compute the formatted citation length in the editor, include it in the invalid state, and show a message that the citation is too long to save.

current takeover verification at 800b032c21838da3adb47701739b7294e33d6c48:
merged current main (37d7615a91) without rebasing. the only conflict was the comment editor imports; preserved main's text direction and the citation validation/accessibility changes. no additional feature changes.
blacksmith vp run check:changed 37d7615a91d880c3776d575e1152b9c955104de2 passed: formatting, lint, knip, 35 package typechecks, 47 tests, and react compiler checks. installed missing chromium on the worker before rerunning browser tests.
two independent read-only reviews approved this exact head with no findings. all five existing bot threads are resolved.
current-head playwright verification with /usr/bin/google-chrome, isolated dev state, and Replay (dev): selected an assistant response, opened cite, confirmed arabic comment direction, rejected 8,001 characters with a linked error and disabled save, then shortened and saved the comment. replay verifies this client regression path; it does not reproduce real provider long ids.
all 28 checks are green; github reports CLEAN and MERGEABLE. pushed to the existing contributor head without force. not merged.
prior-head verification and limitations follow; its provider runs were not repeated in this pass.
Verified in a real dev environment
verified the long-thread-id citation flow on f985b159d7078c5d5091a289e1d3ed2fcf1861af, with no code changes.
ran github/main at 54c5f25249 in a separate worktree first, then the exact pr head, with vp i and one background dev server at a time. used isolated state and playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome on linux.
added a real git project through the web ui. launched a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn through the authenticated orchestration.launchThread api with a 588-character thread id. no fabricated assistant messages, database edits, mocks, replay provider, or fixtures.
on main, selecting the response and clicking cite inserted the raw citation link and opened no comment editor. on the pr, the same response produced a quote chip and comment editor. the before/after captures use the same persisted conversation.
saved, edited, and cleared comments. an 8,001-character comment showed the existing character-limit error, disabled saving, and blocked ctrl+enter. shortening it restored saving. normal 36-character thread ids still supported cite and cancel; cancel removed the draft chip.
followed the long-thread citation to its source and reloaded. the citation hash and source selection survived.
submitted citations through the web composer to real codex turns. checked native codex input and rendered answers: the long-thread quote retained its japanese text and emoji; the normal-thread comment produced the requested unique answer.
short provider transcript, extracted from those actual turns:
long thread: threadIdLength=588
provider input: serialized citation URL
quote: Citation verification alpha. Unicode 日本語 and emoji 🚀 stay intact.
comment: Please repeat the quoted text exactly, including 日本語 and 🚀. Do not use tools.
provider answer: Citation verification alpha. Unicode 日本語 and emoji 🚀 stay intact.
normal thread: threadIdLength=36
comment: Reply with exactly CITATION-COMMENT-OK and nothing else. No tools.
provider answer: CITATION-COMMENT-OK
blacksmith validation passed: 32 focused citation tests, then vp run check:changed 2359643cffa6ba9ee84d6f2694b935de54a8013e with formatting, lint, knip, 35 package typechecks, 47 tests, and react compiler checks. github reports 28 successful checks and no pending or failing checks at this head.
Not verified
the original pi handoff with a 565-character assistant message id was not reproduced. codex generated 89-character message ids here. the real app comparison exercises the changed thread-id limit; long message ids are covered by existing focused tests, not by a real pi turn.
near-160,000-character citation urls and the new url-budget error were exercised by focused tests, not by real provider-generated ids. the recording demonstrates the separate 8,000-character comment limit.
structured provider-context expansion was not observed: codex received the serialized citation url, not an assistant_citations block. it still read the quote/comment and returned the expected answers. this verifies delivery and responses, not structured expansion.
native desktop, ios/android, other providers, remote/relay/tunnel modes, and screen-reader announcements were not exercised on this linux vm.
