Problem

Citing part of an assistant response means reaching for the mouse: select the text, aim at the small Cite button, click. When I review a long response and cite several passages, that trip back and forth is most of the work. Pressing a key while the Cite action is shown doesn't help either, since type-to-focus sends the letter to the composer and the selection is lost.

Change

While the Cite action is shown for a selection, pressing R cites it, the same as clicking Cite: the chip lands in the composer and the comment editor opens with the cursor in it. The button shows an R key hint (plus aria-keyshortcuts="R"), so you find the shortcut right where it applies.

  • AssistantSelectionToolbar.tsx: the existing document keydown listener that moves focus to Cite on Tab now also handles R, by clicking the button, so it goes through the same cite() path. Cmd/Ctrl/Alt+R, IME composition, and already-handled events are left alone. Nothing happens when the action isn't shown or is disabled for an over-long selection.
  • composerFocusRedirect.ts: type-to-focus listens in the window capture phase, so it sees keys before the toolbar does. shouldTypeToFocusComposer now leaves R alone while the Cite action is on screen, the same way it already leaves the right-panel launcher's letters. Other letters still go to the composer, and so does R when nothing is selected.
  • docs/user/composer.md: one line mentioning the shortcut.

On customization: the key only does something while the Cite action is visible and the hint sits on the button, so I kept it fixed rather than adding it to the keybindings system. Happy to move it there if you prefer.

Surfaces: web and desktop (desktop wraps web). Mobile doesn't create citations, so there is nothing to add there.

Scope and approval

I proposed this in Ideas discussion #16154 on Oct 5, with a prototype and screenshots. No maintainer has replied yet, so this PR doesn't have the explicit approval CONTRIBUTING.md asks for, and I want to be upfront about that. I'm opening it anyway because the change is small and self-contained (one branch in an existing key listener, one line in type-to-focus, a hint on the button), and it's easier to judge with the code in front of you. Another contributor described a hold-a-modifier-to-cite approach in the same thread. This doesn't block that one. If you'd rather not take this one, feel free to close it.

Verification

Same thread, selection, and viewport. Before (main): the Cite action has no hint, and pressing R types "r" into the composer and drops the selection.

Before: Cite action without a key hint

After: the Cite action shows R.

After: Cite action with an R key hint

After pressing R: the citation chip is in the composer and the cursor is in the comment editor. The comment was typed straight in without a click.

After pressing R: citation chip in the composer, comment editor focused

The whole flow (select, press R, type a comment). The "Key pressed" badge was injected into the page only for this capture and is not part of the change. MP4 version.

Recording: select text, press R, type a comment

New browser test, AssistantSelectionToolbar.browser.test.tsx, running in real Chromium with real selections and key presses:

  • r and R cite the selection, clear it, and dismiss the action.
  • With the chat's real useChatShortcuts listener mounted, R cites instead of being typed into the composer. With nothing selected, R still goes to the composer.
  • Cmd+R, Ctrl+R, and Alt+R are not taken.
  • Clicking into a text field dismisses the action, and the field keeps R.
  • Tab still focuses the Cite action.

I checked that the tests catch regressions: removing the type-to-focus line fails the composer test, and removing the R branch fails three tests. vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests).

I also tried it by hand in a dev build. One thing I noticed but left alone: clicking Cite logs React's "flushSync was called from inside a lifecycle method" warning. That happens on main too and is unrelated to this change.

Built with Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code in T3 Code.

merge update (2026-10-30)

merged github/main without rebasing in a5b0cb3cad5ed42e95da5f2b2f139cd9b483abb2. the conflict resolution preserves main's launcher keyboard handling and the citation shortcut. scope remains four files.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, nine citation browser cases, and react compiler checks. six nearby chat shortcut browser cases also passed. two independent read-only reviews found no issues on this head. chrome with the replay provider confirmed selection -> r -> citation chip and focused comment editor -> typed comment. native desktop, mobile, other browsers, and paid providers were not exercised in this pass.

chrome recording: r opens the citation comment editor and typing reaches it

ci is running on this head. macroscope requests human approval. see the live checks for final results.

model: gpt-6.1-sol; harness: codex.

While the Cite action is shown for a selection in an assistant response,
pressing R cites it and focuses the comment editor, same as clicking Cite.
Type-to-focus leaves R for the Cite action so it is not typed into the
composer. Cmd, Ctrl and Alt+R still reach the browser.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds an always-available R keyboard shortcut that changes the existing composer typing behavior while assistant text is selected and triggers the citation workflow. The implementation is localized and covered by browser tests, but the new user-facing interaction warrants human review.

Walkthrough

The assistant selection toolbar now supports R as a citation shortcut and displays an R hint when the selection can be cited. The composer focus redirect excludes the shortcut. Browser tests cover citation, composer input, modifier keys, and Tab focus. The user guide labels the action Cite.

thanks @chhoumann. i kept your shortcut, enabled-only hint, existing cite action, browser coverage, and documentation. main still reproduced the issue: pressing r typed into the composer instead of citing.

i preserved your commit, merged current main, and moved the shared shortcut check into composer input handling. that removes the input helper's dependency on the react toolbar and reduces the implementation by five lines. no setting or behavior was added beyond the original intent.

verification passed on ec717123538f8f782dd49ba972acb72c9c1d8bde: remote vp run check:changed (format, lint, knip, typecheck, 60 tests), plus the nine citation browser cases. two independent code reviews found no issues. in the real web client using system chrome, r opened the comment editor, typing went into that editor, normal r still entered the composer, tab focused cite, clicking cite still worked, and sending a citation reached the configured provider. before and after use the same provider-generated response and viewport.

unverified: the native desktop shell and other browsers. desktop shares this web path; mobile has no citation creation control. maintainer product approval remains Maria's decision.

before: main shows cite without the r hint

after: cite shows its r shortcut

after pressing r: citation inserted and comment editor receives typing

recording: r cites the selection and focuses the comment editor

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head ec717123538f8f782dd49ba972acb72c9c1d8bde on this linux boat vm, using repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome at 1440 x 1000. i installed dependencies with vp i, ran one background dev server at a time, and created the project, threads, and responses through the app with real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. no mocks, replay, fixtures, or injected ui.

  • before: separate github/main worktree at a4e1986585. selecting the assistant paragraph showed cite without a key hint. pressing r cleared the selection and entered r in the composer.
  • after: the exact pr head displayed the r hint. pressing r inserted one citation chip, cleared the selection, and focused the comment editor. typing immediately entered that editor; save retained the comment.
  • provider path: i sent the citation and comment through the real web client. codex returned the selected passage verbatim and explained the comment, confirming it received the citation context.
  • nearby behavior: r without selection and another letter with selection still typed into the composer. tab focused cite, enter activated it, mouse citation still worked, and shift+r cited.
  • checks: blacksmith-check installed dependencies and chromium on its worker, then ran vp test run apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantSelectionToolbar.browser.test.tsx: 9 passed. no source changes were needed. the first remote attempt lacked chromium; the rerun after installation passed.

runtime transcript:

main: selected paragraph -> r -> composer="r", selection="", no citation
pr: selected paragraph -> r -> citation chip=1, comment editor focused
pr: typed "Explain why this source connection matters." -> saved -> sent
codex: "The citation shortcut keeps the selected passage connected to its source." matters because it lets you trace the passage back to its original context and verify its meaning.

matching before/after paragraph and viewport; minor title/model-label differences come from current main versus this pr's base.

before: main selection shows cite without an r hint

before: pressing r types into the composer

after: the same passage shows the r shortcut

after: r inserts a citation and typing enters its focused comment editor

recording: select the passage, press r, type a comment, and save

i inspected every capture and played and sought the uploaded 8.6-second mp4 in chrome. the animation above contains the same frames; github renders external mp4 image markdown as a broken image.

Not verified

native electron shell, macos/windows keyboard behavior, safari/firefox, and native ios/android were not exercised on this linux vm. desktop shares this web implementation; mobile has no citation creation control. other providers, remote/relay/tunnel connections, live ime composition, and an overlong selection were not exercised. modifier chords are covered by the existing browser tests rather than live browser reload shortcuts. i did not rerun the full ci suite or check:changed because this pass changed no source files.

Do not consume the cite shortcut from editable fields.

A field can remain focused while a pointer selection is made in the assistant response. The selection observer then restores the toolbar after mouseup. The document capture handler currently prevents r and clicks Cite before the focused field receives it. Check for input and textarea targets before handling the cite shortcut.
