fix(cursor): /compact compacts with the SDK's summarize - #29398
/compact on a Cursor thread never compacted. T3 sent the text /compress as a chat message, and the Cursor SDK passes that to the model as plain text. Depending on the model, it either says /compress isn't a recognized skill or writes a summary as its reply. The context stays the same size either way.
@cursor/sdk 1.2.0 added agent.summarize(). This PR keeps the existing turn path and changes only which SDK call starts the run: compaction turns call agent.summarize() instead of agent.send("/compress"). Run recovery, wait, cancel, interrupt and failure handling are the same code ordinary turns use. wait() returns the summary text as result, so compaction runs skip the "show result as the reply" fallback.
This is a smaller alternative to #27907, which adds a separate compaction path (about 650 lines). Thanks to @Huijiro for #27906 and for finding summarize().
Depends on #27906 for the SDK 1.2.0 bump. Only the last commit is new here: 3 files, +30/−23.
Verified live
On Windows with a real Cursor account (Composer 2.5): read a large file, send a one-word message, /compact, send the same message again, then a recall question. I logged RunResult.usage in a local-only patch:
One-word message
Input tokens
before /compact
53,801
after /compact
47,912
on a brand-new Cursor thread
about 47,000
The summarize run finished and returned a 3,838-character summary, and none of it appears in the chat. Afterwards the model still named the file and its main export without tools. That matches what #27907 measured on the same steps (53,193 → 47,940).
The existing compaction test now checks that the turn asks for summarize and that the summary stays out of the turn's events. Both assertions fail without the fix.
Not covered
The divider reads "Context compaction" rather than "Context compacted", because the adapter doesn't report its own compaction item. Adding one is about 30 lines. Failures still surface as a failed turn with Cursor's error.
/compact isn't listed in the Cursor composer's slash menu. That's true on main too. Typing it out in full works.
Not tested: a server restart right after compaction, or interrupting a summarize.

Bump @cursor/sdk to 1.2.0 so send-level mcpServers no longer clears settingSources plugins/project/user MCP, and pass t3-code on each send again.

T3 sent /compress as a chat message, which the Cursor SDK passes to the
model as plain text. Start agent.summarize() for compaction turns instead
and keep the returned summary out of the chat.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Compaction now uses the SDK’s summarize operation rather than sending a command. The accompanying MCP behavior retains ambient servers alongside T3 tools automatically, requiring confirmation of the expanded default tool availability.

Walkthrough
The Cursor SDK dependency is updated to 1.2.0. The adapter passes configured MCP servers during sends and uses SDK summarization for compaction. Cursor MCP setup and configuration behavior are also documented.

The Cursor SDK dependency is updated to 1.2.0. The send input gains a summarization flag. Logged options include configured MCP server presence and sorted names. The runner calls agent.summarize() when requested and otherwise retains the existing send behavior.

The adapter passes configured MCP servers in send options and marks /compress turns for SDK summarization. Compact-run results are excluded from assistant output. Tests check MCP overrides, summarize calls, and the absence of summary text in turn events.
The documentation describes send-level MCP server configuration, ambient servers and plugins, OAuth and CLI login requirements, and when to restart the agent session.

Compaction now uses the SDK's summarize call, which is the intended fix. If summarization falls back to a trimmed transcript, users continue without a warning that earlier context may be missing. This is an edge case and does not block merge, but it is worth surfacing before or soon after merge.

CursorAgentSdkRunner starts a summarize run when summarize is true and calls agent.summarize() instead of agent.send(...). The adapter test covers the compaction request but uses a fake runner, so this branch has no test at the runner layer. Add a test in packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorAgentSdk.test.ts that passes summarize: true to the runner. It should assert that agent.summarize() is called and that agent.send() is not. This follows the repository rule that backend behavior changes ship with focused tests.

Add a focused test for the summarize branch in CursorAgentSdkRunner, passing
summarize: true and asserting agent.summarize() is called while agent.send() is
not. Locate the branch via agent.summarize() and add the test in
CursorAgentSdk.test.ts, using the existing runner test setup.
On the follow-up about a runner-level summarize test: skipping it. In the runner, the branch is a single ternary choosing agent.summarize() over agent.send(), so a test that asserts which mock got called would just restate it. The adapter test already checks that compaction asks for summarize and that the summary stays out of the chat, and it fails without the fix. The repo's testing rules ask for one layer and no mock-call mirrors.
