Problem

When an ACP agent's authenticate or session initialization (start()) fails with a JSON-RPC error, failure() in packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.ts previously used a static generic string for detail, keeping the agent's actionable error message on cause only and hiding it from the provider settings card.

Fixes #30218

Solution

  • Update failure() in packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.ts to check if cause is an AcpRequestError.
  • If an errorMessage is present, trim and bound it to a safe length (1,024 chars), appending it to detail with appropriate punctuation.
  • Update packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.test.ts to assert that:
    • When post-login verification fails, the agent error message (Authentication required) is appended to detail.
    • When authenticate fails, the agent error message (Connect to the VPN, then sign in again.) is appended to detail.

Verification

  • Ran vp test run --config ./vite.config.ts packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.test.ts: 6/6 tests passed.
  • Ran vp fmt and vp run check:changed:
    • format: pass
    • lint: pass (0 warnings, 0 errors)
    • knip: pass
    • typecheck (10 packages): pass
    • test (2 files, 7 tests): pass

…lure (pingdotgg#30218)

When an ACP agent's authenticate or session initialization fails, failure()
previously used a static generic string for detail, discarding the specific
errorMessage attached to cause.

Append the AcpRequestError errorMessage to detail when present so the
provider card displays the actionable reason to the user.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at e25767c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — ACP registry failures now include the agent’s error message alongside the existing explanation. The change is limited to diagnostics and leaves authentication behavior and product defaults unchanged.

Walkthrough

ACP authentication failures now include a trimmed agent error message, capped at 1,024 characters, in the provider setup error detail. Tests cover the resulting messages for post-login verification and browser authentication failures.

For an AcpRequestError, the failure helper appends its nonempty, trimmed message, truncated to 1,024 characters. Other causes leave the supplied detail unchanged. Tests check the failure messages for verification and browser authentication failures. The browser failure test also checks that authentication is not reported as changed.

The description explains the problem, the implementation, and focused verification results. It uses a "Solution" heading instead of the template's "Change" heading and omits the "Scope and approval" section, including why the focused fix did not require prior approval.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #30218 is the only active direct linked issue, so its coding requirements apply. The issue requires that the provider card shows the agent's JSON-RPC error message when authenticate fails. It also requires the same for the post-sign-in verify failure. At the reviewed head (8f8c493), failure() in packages/provider-acp-registry/src/server/auth.ts checks isAcpRequestError(cause). When errorMessage is non-empty after trimming, it appends the message, bounded to 1,024 characters, to the fixed detail. It adds a period first when the detail does not end with one. The authenticate path ("The ACP agent could not complete sign-in.") and the terminal and non-terminal verify paths ("The provider could not create a session after ...") all pass their cause through this helper. cause is still passed to ProviderSetupError. The new test includes the agent error message when authenticate fails asserts the message "The ACP agent could not complete sign-in. Connect to the VPN, then sign in again.". The updated verification test asserts "... terminal sign-in. Authentication required". These assertions match the expected behavior in the issue. The PR objectives text describes a different approach (static detail, error on cause only). That text conflicts with the current PR description, the code, and the linked issue. This assessment does not treat it as a requirement. The author reports a passing test run (6/6 for auth.test.ts). This assessment did not run tests, so it relies on the source diff and the test assertions.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes two files. In auth.ts, the changes add effect/Schema and effect-acp/errors imports, the constants MAX_ERROR_MESSAGE_LENGTH and isAcpRequestError, and the updated failure() helper. All of these support the detail-appending requirement of #30218. In auth.test.ts, the changes add an optional failAuthentication parameter to makeHarness, a new authenticate-failure test, and an assertion on the verify-failure message. These changes exercise the new behavior. No hunk changes unrelated provider behavior, logout, method discovery, or terminal-flow logic beyond the failure() helper that all paths share. The change to failure() affects every caller that passes an AcpRequestError cause. That effect follows directly from the issue request.

Keep ACP agent errors out of ProviderSetupError.detail.

The helper currently copies AcpRequestError.errorMessage into the client-facing detail. A failed browser sign-in or session verification can therefore expose arbitrary agent output to another provider-auth subscriber. Keep the error only in cause, as in the PR base and the prior fix.
