id: design: graphical client & tooling surface — windowing, world inspector, debug UI #5782

Summary

Design the graphical client and tooling surface for ID as its own space: multi-world windowing, the world inspector, and the debug UI — the graphical layer beyond any single shell implementation.

Motivation

#788 designs one reference shell to prove the shell contract — a conformance artefact. That is a different job from designing the graphical surface people will actually work in. Nothing currently owns: what a multi-world graphical client looks like (windows, presence, several servers at once — the #790 topology made visible); the inspector (the journal, the triple graph, capability grants, and lease state as browsable, first-class objects); or debug tooling (event-stream tailing, replay scrubbing against the determinism infrastructure, fixture-replay results from #558's dev loop shown graphically instead of as terminal text). Every serious session with ID ends with someone wanting to see the journal and the graph; today the only windows are the terminal and the web Explorer, and neither was designed as an inspector.

Sketch

Open questions

  • Operator tooling vs shipped-to-everyone surface: is the inspector a mode, a separate app, or the same app with authority-gated panels?
  • How much graph visualisation is honest at world scale — where does the triple explorer stop helping?
  • Accessibility and keyboard-first operation as design constraints, not afterthoughts?
  • Does the inspector need write affordances (moderation actions per id(world): F14.6 builder and moderator authority through session frames (F12.3 remainder) #835) or is it read-only by design?

Relations

Parent: epic #2056. Relations: #788 (reference shell — implementation/conformance; this issue is the surface design it doesn't own), #790 (multi-world topology), #5545 (discovery + counted/uncounted rendering), #2819 (lease state display), #5684 (delegation legibility), #835 (moderation surface question), #558 (dev-loop results surface). Filed in the 2026-11-04 gap pass (WS-F) per Drew's order that the GUI gets its own design issue.

Correction/link (WS-F): precursor found after filing. #1072 — "id: idea — native GUI client" (2026-10-27, from pkgs/id/TODO.md) is the idea-level seed for a native GUI: "the full end-user GUI app idea," explicitly distinct from #788, long-term / low priority, its acceptance centred on a GUI stack decision (Tauri/egui/Leptos/Dioxus/Iced/Bevy) including the Bevy-embedding consideration.

Boundary: #1072 owns the end-user app idea and the stack decision; this issue (#5782) owns the graphical surface and tooling design — multi-world windowing, the world inspector, and the debug UI — which #1072 does not scope. The stack decision recorded on #1072 (and the framework record in #788) constrains this design; this design's requirements are inputs to it. Not a duplicate — a precursor, linked late because the pass's title-keyword search ("design") did not surface an "idea"-titled issue; the gap pass worklog records the miss.

    • Task: Triage issue id: design: graphical client & tooling surface — windowing, world inspector, debug UI #5782 (id: design: graphical client & tooling surface)
    • Expectation: execution lane assigned opencode by fleet queue lane for task 10186; the laptop opencode claimant launches the bound session, which drives task 10186 to its terminal state. This lane does not work it directly.

Progress from repo-worker-code-r: claimed: triaging design issue state from its 49 comments; next: last-activity synthesis + route

Released by repo-worker-code-r (outcome: free). No work done or needed (lane code-r agrees with the fresh check): #5782 triage completed 2026-11-05 by the OpenChamber lane; terminal recorded by lane code-e 2026-11-07T04:22Z and re-confirmed by lanes code-n 04:25Z, code-l 04:32Z, code-h 04:35Z. Issue remains OPEN as canonical design item, labels status/triaged + queue/queued, no hard-stop labels. Released free so the design item stays visible to its design owner; the repeated re-claims are the fallback scan re-listing a released design item.

Picked up by repo-worker-code-b — working this now. (Fleet queue fallback mode: the queue backend is down, so this issue's comments carry the claim. The claim stays live while repo-worker-code-b posts progress markers; after 30 minutes of silence any other worker may pick this up.)

Released by repo-worker-code-b (outcome: free). Already triaged (fallback, lane code-b): #5782 triage completed 2026-11-05 by the OpenChamber lane; terminal recorded by lane code-e 2026-11-07T04:22Z and re-confirmed by lanes code-n/l/h/r. Fresh check: issue OPEN as canonical graphical-surface design item, status/triaged, no hard-stop labels, no PR. No duplicate work; the design work itself remains open for its owner. Nothing remains for a triage claim.
