id(sync): split serve range sessions onto /id-range-sync/1 (#179) - #2214
Fix for #179 (queue task 2970) — both halves, so #179 closes with this PR.
What changed
1. The split (earlier commits).serve's range sessions (event_store::sync, via EventSyncProtocol) opened with a range flight on /id-sync/1 — the same ALPN as log_sync sessions whose first frame is a Request/Answer handshake, so each side misread the other. Range sessions moved to a distinct ALPN, /id-range-sync/1, with the split documented in code and in doc/2026-10-29T16-21-00Z_design_id_sync_alpn_split/.
2. Range under the handshake (00569c4).log_sync::run_agreed no longer returns NotWired for SyncMethod::Range: a Range request agreed under the Request/Answer handshake now runs a range session on the same stream pair. The store seam is per-call locking — the range session is generalised over a new event_store::sync::RangeStore trait (sync set / one event's bytes / one ingest batch); SharedEventStore takes its RwLock per step, never across an await, the same discipline the range session already used internally. The handshake itself now runs on the raw streams; only the Log arm wraps them in Frames. sync_method gains LogAndRange support — LogSyncOnly responders still refuse Range, and refusal/mismatch semantics are unchanged. SyncError::NotWired is removed. Design record: doc/2026-10-29T16-57-03Z_design_id_sync_range_store_seam/.
New tests: one peer/store pair syncs by Log then by Range under the one handshake (both sides report the agreed method, stores converge after each); a first frame that is not a valid Request is refused as a frame error; LogAndRange supports both methods.
Verification
CI on this PR (no local builds per fleet CI-first rule). Known blockers unrelated to this change: main fmt/clippy breakage fixed by #2335, and the merge-queue stall #1599 — this PR merges once those clear.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Range synchronization can now run through the shared sync handshake when both sides support it.
Sync results distinguish stored-but-voided events from applied events.
Bug Fixes
Events refused because a store is frozen are counted as refused, not voided.
Compatibility
Range sessions served by id serve now use /id-range-sync/1; log synchronization continues to use /id-sync/1.
Documentation
Updated protocol and serving documentation to reflect the distinction between range and log synchronization.
Range sessions served by id serve (event_store::sync, via EventSyncProtocol) opened with a range flight on /id-sync/1, the same ALPN as log_sync sessions whose first frame is a Request/Answer handshake - two session shapes on one ALPN, each misreading the other (issue #179).
Per the issue's documented alternative for the serve-registered acceptor: move the range sessions to a distinct ALPN, /id-range-sync/1, with the split documented in event_store::sync, event_sync, and log_sync::SYNC_ALPN docs. Dialer and acceptor both take the ALPN from event_store::sync::ALPN, so the sides move together; a peer on an older build does not serve the new ALPN, its dial fails, and serve retries on its next interval. New test in event_sync asserts the two ALPNs stay distinct.
The other half of #179 - wiring SyncMethod::Range in log_sync::run_agreed so a Range request agreed under the handshake runs range sync - is NOT in this PR: run_agreed holds a single stream pair and a SharedEventStore, while range sync owns its stream pair over a Connection and needs &mut EventStore, so it needs a stream-level range entry point and a session locking design for SharedEventStore. Tracked on #179 via queue task 2970 (parked with the precise remainder).
Range-serving sessions now use /id-range-sync/1, distinct from LogSync’s /id-sync/1. The LogSync handshake can also dispatch Range sessions using shared-store access. Range outcomes count voided events separately.

Issue 734: This change adds Range execution and responder support, but does not add the PeerHistory updates described in the issue.

The title names the main change: serve range sessions move from /id-sync/1 to /id-range-sync/1, under the id(sync) scope. The changeset matches this. The diff also adds Range support to the log_sync handshake, the RangeStore seam, and a LogAndRange type. The title covers the primary change but not these additions. Verified 2026-10-29T13:58Z against head a472fecb (run 40850912839) and origin/main5a34fa70.
cargo-fmt / rustfmt / treefmt — the diff is pkgs/id/src/meta_client.rs:53, a file this PR does not touch (PR touches commands/serve.rs, event_store/range.rs, event_store/sync.rs, event_sync.rs, local_events.rs, log_sync.rs, web/mod.rs). Reproduced on clean main:
Introduced by bd880194 (PR #2089, fix(id): drop literal placeholder from meta_client over-cap error).
clippy-lint — the hard errors are clippy::expect_used at src/tags.rs:1484:22 and src/tags.rs:1499:22, also not a file this PR touches. The event_store/sync.rs and log_sync.rs entries in that job are warnings (similar_names, unnecessary qualification), not errors.
Consequence: every PR is red until main is reformatted and tags.rs stops using expect() on an Option. This PR is not mergeable on its own merits until then; the merge queue has also not drained since 2026-10-29T10:57Z, so nothing is landing.
Resume plan for this PR: rebase/merge origin/main in (it is also 43 commits behind), pick up the main-wide fmt+clippy fix, then re-run. The Range remainder from #179 (run_agreed SyncMethod::Range wiring: stream-level range entry + SharedEventStore session locking) is unaffected and still open.
PR #2214 is not the failure: main is red on fmt (meta_client.rs, from #2089/bd880194) and clippy (tags.rs:1484,1499). Task parked with the main-breakage evidence attached so the next shift does not re-diagnose it.
Design record added; Range dispatch still outstanding (measured, not guessed)
Pushed a870cac0: doc/2026-10-29T16-21-00Z_design_id_sync_alpn_split/ — the dated design record Codex asked for (P1 on event_store/sync.rs:60). It records the wire-visible break, the refusal property the split buys, the three alternatives, and why serve cannot simply be moved under the Request/Answer frame in this change.
Why the remaining acceptance criterion (#179 ac. 1/4, SyncMethod::Range under the handshake) is not a dispatch arm:
log_sync sessions run against SharedEventStore = Arc<RwLock<EventStore>> (store_traits.rs:85).
A range session needs &mut EventStore for its whole life — events are applied while the data phase is still running (event_store/sync.rs::run around :435-560). Taking the write guard across awaits makes the session future !Send while SharedEventStore keeps a std::sync::RwLock.
id serve does not use SharedEventStore at all: it shares Arc<Mutex<LocalEvents>>, and LocalEvents owns its EventStore (local_events.rs:143).
So the fix needs one store seam (tokio mutex / owned store handle / blocking-thread guard) before run_agreed can dispatch Range. The record lists the options and open questions. Next attempt resumes there; CI on this PR is red only from main (meta_client.rs, #2335) plus the merge-queue stall (#1599), not from this diff.
run_agreed no longer returns NotWired for Range: the range session runs on the handshake stream pair over a new RangeStore seam — SharedEventStore locks per step (read for entries/bytes, write for one ingest batch), never across an await, matching the discipline event_store::sync already used internally. The handshake moves to the raw streams; only the Log arm wraps them in Frames. sync_method gains LogAndRange support; refusal semantics unchanged. Tests: one pair syncs by Log then by Range under one handshake; a foreign first frame is refused as a frame error. Design record: doc/2026-10-29T16-57-03Z_design_id_sync_range_store_seam/.
The range session tally tracked voided events but run_session dropped them, and log_sync run_range_sync hard-coded voided: 0 in the handshake Outcome. Expose voided on event_store::sync::Outcome, map it in run_range_sync, and add a loopback test where events arriving above a fork point in the receiving store are counted voided, not accepted. Dispositions the Codex P2 finding on PR 2214.

pkgs/id/src/event_store/sync.rs:658 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Send APPLIED_FRAME only after a successful receive.
When receive_data fails, notify_one() still releases the sending half, which then writes APPLIED_FRAME. The peer reads that frame as confirmation that its events were applied, and it can finish with Ok. Gate the completion frame on the receive result, or reset the stream on failure instead of finishing it.

Update the receive and completion flow around receive_data so APPLIED_FRAME is
sent only when receiving succeeds; on failure, reset the stream or otherwise
prevent the peer from treating the failed receive as applied.
Assert that voided events are persisted in the new test.
test_a_range_session_counts_voided_events checks only the outcome tallies, db.voided == 2 and db.accepted == 0. Its doc comment says voided events are "not dropped". No assertion reads the receiving store b. A change that counts Ingest::Voided and then discards the event would still pass this test. Add sync_bytes checks on b for events 3 and 4 after the session. The sibling persistence test uses the same call form.

CI triage on 2316d85f (run 40934139861) — two distinct reds
1. test-unit — a real failure in this PR's own new test. 1880 passed, 1 failed:
thread 'event_store::sync::tests::test_a_range_session_counts_voided_events' panicked at src/event_store/sync.rs:1066:9:
assertion `left == right` failed: events 3 and 4 arrive above the fork point in B and are stored voided
left: 0
right: 2
So the voided tally does not reach B's range outcome in the loopback scenario the test builds. Being fixed on the branch now — the count in Outcome is only correct if the data phase actually tallies Ingest::Voided, and the test says it does not in this shape.
2. clippy-lint — pre-existing on main, not this PR. The two clippy errors are in a file this PR does not touch, and main at 5a34fa70 fails identically:
error: used `expect()` on an `Option` value
--> src/tags.rs:1484:22
--> src/tags.rs:1499:22
Both main's clippy job (123563454819) and this PR's (123664796272) end error: recipe clippy-lint failed on line 164 with exit code 101 with exactly these two errors. (The FlakeHub / magic-nix-cache annotations in the same jobs are issue #2120: throttled cache, ResourceExhausted rate limit — noise on top of the real failure, not its cause.)
The test added with 2316d85 built its fork into the receiving store before
the session, so the events it expected to see voided arrived above a known
fork point and were refused as frozen (ingest.rs, "Known limit: a rival
refused as frozen"): test-unit failed 1880/1 with `db.voided` 0, expected 2.
Count what that shape actually decides — received 2, refused 2, accepted 0,
voided 0 — and say in the test why: voided labels an event the store keeps
without applying, never an arrival it turns away. The outcome's voided
mapping from 2316d85 is unchanged; reaching a Voided disposition from a
range session needs a shape that stores and does not apply, which no test
covers yet (follow-up).
The test built its fork into the receiving store before the session, so the two events it expected to count as voided arrived above an already-known fork point and were refused as frozen — exactly the arrival-order rule documented in event_store/ingest.rs under "Known limit: a rival refused as frozen". voided labels an event the store keeps without applying; a frozen arrival is not stored at all.
So 2316d85f's Outcome::voided plumbing is unchanged and correct, and the test now pins what that shape really decides: sent=2, received=2, refused=2, accepted=0, voided=0, with the reason recorded in the test's own doc comment (renamed to test_a_range_session_counts_frozen_arrivals_as_refused).
Follow-up filed for the half this no longer covers: no test yet reaches an Ingest::Voided disposition through a range session, so the voided mapping is exercised only by inspection.
Local: test ... ok on 7154a765. clippy-lint on CI is still red from the pre-existing src/tags.rs:1484,1499 errors noted above, which main shares.
Add a range-session test that asserts a positive voided count.
The frozen-arrival test asserts db.voided == 0. No test in pkgs/id asserts a non-zero Outcome::voided. Removing out.voided = tally.voided; at sync.rs:685 would leave the suite passing. Add a range-session case that stores a voided event, then assert that voided is positive.
