Closes #180.

Problem

The sync data-phase receiver batched purely by event count (BATCH_EVENTS = 256), so a batch of large events had no byte bound: 256 events of a megabyte each decide a quarter gigabyte in one write transaction.

Change

pkgs/id/src/event_store/sync.rs

  • adds BATCH_BYTES = 8 MiB; whichever bound is reached first ends the batch
  • bytes are measured on the wire frame (record.len()), not the decoded event: that is what the receiver buffered and what the peer spent
  • the bound check is a named function (batch_is_full) so both bounds are testable without a session

Small events keep the count-bound throughput unchanged; a single oversized event now flushes on its own instead of waiting behind up to 255 peers.

Tests

  • new batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes unit test — pass (cargo test --lib event_store::sync::tests::batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes)
  • existing event_store::sync suite — running on this branch / CI

No protocol change: ALPN and the frame format are untouched, only when the receiver commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Event reception now flushes batches when they reach 256 events or 8 MiB of event data, whichever comes first. This allows large batches to be processed based on their size as well as their event count.

The data phase decided one write transaction per 256 events, so a batch of
large events buffered without a memory bound: 256 one-megabyte events is a
quarter gigabyte decided at once.

Whichever bound is reached first now ends the batch. BATCH_BYTES (8 MiB) is
measured on the wire frame, since that is what the receiver buffered and what
the peer spent; small events keep the count-bound throughput unchanged.

The bound check is a named function so both bounds are testable without a
session.

Opened. BATCH_EVENTS (256) now has a byte companion, BATCH_BYTES (8 MiB); whichever is reached first ends the write transaction. Bytes are measured on the wire frame (record.len()) rather than the decoded event, since the frame is what the receiver buffered.

The bound check is batch_is_full(events, bytes), extracted so both bounds are testable without a session. New test batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes covers: below both bounds, count-bound trip, byte-bound trip with 1 event, and one oversized event.

Local: cargo test --lib event_store::sync::tests::batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes pass. Full event_store::sync module running locally and in CI.

No protocol change — ALPN and frame format untouched.

Walkthrough

Event reception now flushes a batch when it reaches 256 events or 8 MiB of event-frame payload bytes. The byte count resets after each flush. Tests cover both limits and a single event that exceeds the byte limit.

Explanation

Issue #180 requires a byte bound for data-phase sync batches in addition to the existing event-count bound. The PR adds BATCH_BYTES = 8 << 20, tracks record.len() for each received frame, and flushes when batch_is_full reaches either BATCH_EVENTS or BATCH_BYTES. The new unit test covers below-bound, count-bound, byte-bound, and oversized-event cases.

Explanation

The diff changes only pkgs/id/src/event_store/sync.rs. The added constant, byte accounting, batch predicate, and unit test directly support issue #180. No unrelated behavior or public API change is shown.

Note for CI: cargo fmt --check on this branch reports a diff only in pkgs/id/src/meta_client.rs — pre-existing on main (task 3495 tracks it), not from this change. sync.rs is fmt-clean.

Add a receiver-level test for the byte-based flush.

batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes checks only batch_is_full. No test observes the receive_data call to batch_is_full or the pending_bytes reset after a flush. A future change that breaks either one would leave the suite passing. The current receiver logic is correct, so this is a coverage gap, not a present defect.

Rename the new test with the test_ prefix.

The new test batch_bounds_end_on_count_or_bytes does not follow the pkgs/id naming rule for tests. The other four tests in the same tests module use the test_ prefix.
