mcpx: program-spec resolver — nix:<ref>#<attr> resolves once to a store path (#1921 Part 1) - #2585
Part 1 of #1921 (Approach C), per triage task 2816. Queue task 3199. Part 2 (execution environments) and adapters/script.interpreter wiring stay on #1921 — this PR does not close it.
What
New internal/progspec — one resolver for every program mcpx spawns:
plain spec → exactly today's exec.LookPath behaviour (a path is used as-is);
nix:<ref>#<attr> (or nix:<ref> for the default package) → resolved once via nix build --no-link --print-out-paths; the spawned argv is the store path itself (<out>/bin/<program>: attribute leaf name, else a lone bin/ executable, else an explicit error) — no nix process in the hot path. In-process memo only; the durable cache + GC roots remain mcpx: one content-addressed cache for prepared dependencies, import graphs and flake resolutions #1908's mechanism.
Failures are explicit and name the spec: missing nix binary, unresolvable ref (with the nix stderr tail), or timeout. No silent fallback to PATH — that would run a different program than configured. WaitDelay bounds the pipe wait after a timeout kill, so a timed-out build's children cannot stretch the timeout (the descendant-pipe trap).
Wiring: mcpclient.NewStdio resolves a nix: server command at spawn (plain commands pass through byte-for-byte as before); registry ToInstall gains the nix package type beside npm/pypi/oci/nuget — its Install.Command is the program spec and How says so (a bare attribute name means nixpkgs); mcpx doctor no longer reports a nix: command as not-installed and reports how many servers resolve via nix at launch (the store path is the program's identity there and in Resolved.StorePath).
Tests
Laptop, all passing: internal/progspec (parse table incl. nix:github:, nix:., nix:nixpkgs#, malformed; stubbed-nix resolver: success + memo count, missing nix, bad ref, timeout), internal/registry (nix install shapes + existing), internal/mcpclient (full package), internal/cli (full package), go vet clean.
Note: docs/parity.md is regenerated — only its CLI-command count line changed; TestParityDocumentIsCurrent fails on clean main (verified at 3a42555) without it. Full suite runs in CI on this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for Nix program specifications when installing and launching server commands. Nix-based commands are resolved at launch, and diagnostics report invalid specifications, unavailable Nix, or how many commands will use Nix.
Nix package installs preserve package arguments, non-secret environment defaults, required variables, and transport settings.
Bug Fixes
Startup cancellation now applies while resolving commands and opening server connections. Existing supervised processes can be reattached without resolving their command again.
…re path (#1921 Part 1)
New internal/progspec: a plain spec resolves exactly as exec.LookPath does today; a nix: spec resolves once via nix build --no-link --print-out-paths (in-process memo; the durable cache and GC roots stay #1908) and the spawned argv is the store path itself — no nix process in the hot path. Missing nix, a bad ref, and a timeout each fail naming the spec; there is no silent PATH fallback. WaitDelay bounds the pipe wait after a timeout kill.
Wiring: mcpclient.NewStdio resolves a nix: server command at spawn (plain commands pass through untouched); registry ToInstall gains the nix package type, whose Install command is the program spec (a bare attribute name means nixpkgs); doctor no longer reports a nix: command as not installed and reports the count resolved at launch. Tests: parse table, stubbed-nix resolver (success/memo, missing nix, bad ref, timeout), registry nix install shapes. Also regenerates docs/parity.md: its CLI command count line was stale on main (TestParityDocumentIsCurrent fails at 3a42555 without this change); regeneration changes only that line. Part 2 (execution environments) and adapters/script.interpreter wiring remain on #1921. Queue task 3199.

Walkthrough
The change adds Nix program-spec parsing and resolution, converts Nix registry packages into program specs, and uses resolution during stdio startup. Pool startup passes its context to transport dialing, and the doctor command recognizes valid Nix specs.
Changes: Nix Program Specifications
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Program-spec parsing and resolution pkgs/mcpx/internal/progspec/*
The new package parses plain and Nix specs, resolves executables from Nix build outputs, and memoizes Nix resolutions by spec and directory. Tests cover parsing, resolution, failures, timeouts, and caching.
The registry converts Nix package identifiers into program-spec install commands. Tests cover invalid offers and retained install metadata.
Transport resolution and startup context pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/stdio.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/supervised.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/stdio_progspec_test.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/*
Stdio and supervised transports resolve Nix specs before process launch. Pool dialing passes startup context to the transports, including retries. Tests cover cancellation, reattachment, and child communication.
Doctor Nix command checks pkgs/mcpx/internal/cli/doctor.go
The doctor command parses Nix specs instead of requiring them on PATH. Its successful check reports the count of valid Nix specs and their launch-time store-path resolution.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 01e8b
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: concurrent starts may perform redundant Nix builds, and the reattach test should more strongly protect against unnecessary resolution. No serious current startup failure is established.

Coalesce concurrent nix build resolutions for the same spec.
When two starts resolve the same uncached nix: spec at once, each caller runs nix build. Resolve releases memoMu before resolveNix and records no in-flight entry. Record an in-flight entry per spec, and have later callers wait for its result.

Update Resolve’s memoization around resolveNix to track an in-flight resolution
per spec; later callers for the same uncached nix: spec should wait for and
reuse the first caller’s result instead of starting another nix build.
Add a launch test for nix: program specs in NewStdio.
NewStdio resolves nix: specs through progspec.ResolvePath before it calls exec.Command. No test starts a child with a nix: command. The progspec tests check only the resolved path string, so a change that drops the resolution call would pass the suite. Add a test in pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient that runs NewStdio with a nix: command and a stub nix on PATH, and asserts the child ran from the store path. Also rename TestResolveNixSpecBuildsOnceAndSpawnsTheStorePath, because it never spawns a child.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
A memo hit returns a store executable without checking that it still exists; the package explicitly creates no GC root for its built output.
Subsequent launches fail at process start instead of rebuilding the package.
This can occur when: Nix garbage collection removes an output after its first successful resolution while the mcpx process remains alive.

@codex review — new head 7dfeac2 dispositions the previous round's findings (attach-before-resolve + spec validation); all prior threads are resolved with replies.
…2, PR #2585)
A supervised server whose Env overrides PATH without nix launched nothing: the daemon resolved the spec with its own PATH, discarded the result, and the supervisor — running under the server Env — tried to resolve the spec again and failed. newSupervised now captures the resolution and passes the store path to the supervisor it spawns (spawnOpts), leaving attach/reattach untouched. The handover resolves FRESH (new progspec.ResolveFreshInDir / ResolvePathFreshInDir): a memoized path names whatever an earlier context resolved, which another process cannot trust — the memo is also why the discarded-result design existed. Regression test TestSupervisedNixSpecWithServerPathExcludingNix covers the Codex repro (stub nix on the daemon PATH, server PATH /usr/bin:/bin); all supervised/stdio tests and the progspec suite pass.

TestResolveNixSpecTimeoutNamesTheSpec passes for any error whose text contains nix:slowref#tool. The non-timeout failure path also includes the spec in its message, so the test does not check that the deadline was reported as a deadline. If the timeout branch stopped wrapping the deadline error, this test would still pass.
On timeout, resolveNix returns ctx.Err() wrapped with %w (pkgs/mcpx/internal/progspec/progspec.go:225-226). Adding an errors. Is check verifies that classification.

Record each build's working directory in the test stub.
Record each build's working directory in the test stub.
TestResolveNixSpecInDirBuildsThereAndMemoisesPerDir checks only the number of stub invocations. Its name says the builds run in each directory, but no assertion checks that. ResolveInDir sets cmd.Dir = dir. If that binding is removed, the test still records two invocations and passes. The spec nix:.#faketool uses a relative flake reference, so the directory in which nix build runs can change the flake it builds.
Make the stub record its working directory on each call. Then assert that the recorded directories are dirA and then dirB.
The comment at progspec_test.go:158-160 says the stub records its working directory when MCPX_STUB_PWD is set. No code reads that variable. Remove that comment, or implement the behavior it describes.

…ce (#1921)
Dispositions the Codex review round on f12648f: (P1) a memoised nix resolution whose store output was deleted (GC / a prior -count=N test temp dir) is evicted and rebuilt instead of handing back a dead executable -- regression test TestResolveNixSpecMemoEvictsDeletedOutput, stub nix now recreates its output like a real build; (P2) mcpx doctor now reports a nix: server command as missing when the nix binary is not on PATH instead of counting it runnable. The memo-hit branch also checks ctx.Err() before returning (CodeRabbit minor, same branch).

TestSupervisedReattachDoesNotResolveNixSpec assumed Close() frees the supervisor attach slot instantly; the supervisor clears it asynchronously on disconnect, so under the PR stress run (shuffle seed 545773582221596012, run 41060331412) the immediate reattach was refused "already attached" — the #2609 flake, already documented and handled the same way in supervised_test.go. Poll the reattach for up to 10s, retrying only on that refusal.
🤖 Queue worker Lane C (task 3199, resume): fixed the PR's own stress failure and pushed 01e8b72e.
What failed: mcpx stress run 41060331412 on 1918789a — TestSupervisedReattachDoesNotResolveNixSpec: supervisor refused attach: already attached at the immediate reattach after Close(). Root cause is the known #2609 flake: the supervisor clears its attach slot asynchronously when it notices the disconnect, and this test assumed the release was instant (the sibling test in supervised_test.go already polls for exactly this reason).
Fix (test-only): poll the reattach for up to 10s, retrying only on the "already attached" refusal — identical pattern to supervised_test.go.
Verified on the laptop:go vet ./internal/mcpclient/ clean; go test ./internal/mcpclient/ -run 'NixSpec|Supervised|Stdio' -race -shuffle=545773582221596012 -count=3 pass; full internal/mcpclient + internal/progspec + internal/registry with the same shuffle seed, -count=2, pass. The other failures in run 41060331412 (TestParityDocumentIsCurrent, internal/cli timeout) are the known main-broken set (#2534), not this PR's packages.

Name the CLI PATH in the missing-nix row.
The nix check runs exec.LookPath("nix") in the CLI process. A nix: server resolves in the daemon at launch. The row text says only "not on PATH", so it does not show which PATH was checked. A user who reads it may check the wrong environment.

Assert that reattach does not resolve through the memo.
The reattach test keeps the fake store output on disk after tr.Close(). A later call to ResolvePathInDir with the same command and an empty Cwd would hit the memo entry and succeed with PATH emptied. The test would still pass. Remove the store output after tr.Close() and before reattaching. The memo entry then fails the executable check, and resolution reruns without nix on PATH. A regression then fails the reattach.

output after tr.Close() and before attempting reattachment, so the memoized
executable path is invalid and resolution must rerun without nix on PATH.

Part 1 of #1921 (Approach C), per triage task 2816. Queue task 3199. Part 2 (execution environments) and adapters/
script.interpreterwiring stay on #1921 — this PR does not close it.What
internal/progspec— one resolver for every program mcpx spawns:exec.LookPathbehaviour (a path is used as-is);nix:<ref>#<attr>(ornix:<ref>for the default package) → resolved once vianix build --no-link --print-out-paths; the spawned argv is the store path itself (<out>/bin/<program>: attribute leaf name, else a lonebin/executable, else an explicit error) — no nix process in the hot path. In-process memo only; the durable cache + GC roots remain mcpx: one content-addressed cache for prepared dependencies, import graphs and flake resolutions #1908's mechanism.WaitDelaybounds the pipe wait after a timeout kill, so a timed-out build's children cannot stretch the timeout (the descendant-pipe trap).mcpclient.NewStdioresolves anix:server command at spawn (plain commands pass through byte-for-byte as before); registryToInstallgains the nix package type beside npm/pypi/oci/nuget — itsInstall.Commandis the program spec andHowsays so (a bare attribute name meansnixpkgs);mcpx doctorno longer reports anix:command as not-installed and reports how many servers resolve via nix at launch (the store path is the program's identity there and inResolved.StorePath).Tests
Laptop, all passing:
internal/progspec(parse table incl.nix:github:,nix:.,nix:nixpkgs#, malformed; stubbed-nix resolver: success + memo count, missing nix, bad ref, timeout),internal/registry(nix install shapes + existing),internal/mcpclient(full package),internal/cli(full package),go vetclean.Note:
docs/parity.mdis regenerated — only its CLI-command count line changed;TestParityDocumentIsCurrentfails on clean main (verified at 3a42555) without it. Full suite runs in CI on this PR.Need help on this PR? Tag
