Summary

  • Register each WorldProtocol::accept connection with the shared abuse evaluator, keyed by remote endpoint.
  • Refuse over-cap connections before spawning session tasks; log peer/cap hits and expose the refusal count.
  • Release registered slots with an RAII guard when the connection handler exits.
  • Add an Iroh integration regression test for cap+1 refusal, per-peer isolation, and slot reuse after close.

Fixes #4227.

Verification

  • cargo test --manifest-path pkgs/id/Cargo.toml -p id --lib abuse:: — 19 passed
  • cargo test --manifest-path pkgs/id/Cargo.toml -p id --lib world_net::tests:: — 21 passed (includes the new cap test)

CI coverage note

Fresh PR checks show only the OpenCode metered-provider guard. The policy-required basic: proxy port fallbacks check and the id affected-crate PR matrix did not run: .github/workflows/nix-ci.yml and .github/workflows/id-check.yml have no pull_request trigger. The targeted abuse and world-network suites above were run locally on the branch after merging current main; no workflow changes are included in this scoped fix.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Active connections are now limited separately for each remote peer. Connections beyond a peer’s limit are refused, while other peers can still connect independently.
    • When a connection closes, its slot becomes available for a new connection from that peer.
    • The protocol now tracks the lifetime count of connections refused for exceeding the per-peer limit.

Walkthrough

WorldProtocol now tracks active connections by remote peer through the abuse evaluator. It refuses connections when the per-peer cap is reached, counts those refusals, and releases successful registrations when connection handlers exit.

Changes: Per-peer connection cap

Layer / File(s) Summary
Connection registration and refusal counter
pkgs/id/src/world_net.rs
WorldProtocol initializes and exposes a refusal counter. A registration guard closes the evaluator entry when dropped.
Accept enforcement and regression tests
pkgs/id/src/world_net.rs, pkgs/id/src/abuse.rs
accept registers connections and refuses capped connections or evaluator lock errors. Tests cover the per-peer cap, independent admission for another peer, and slot reuse after a connection closes.

  • developing-today/code#3960 — That PR integrated the shared abuse evaluator into WorldProtocol; this change adds per-connection registration and cap enforcement to that integration.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 657e6

The change has a modest scaling concern: accepting connections scans retained peer state while holding a shared mutex. It is mergeable with performance follow-up and a small test-name cleanup.

Explanation

The title "fix(id): enforce per-peer world connection cap" matches the main change. The raw summary shows WorldProtocol::accept now tracks active connections per remote peer, refuses connections above the per-peer cap, and logs and counts refusals. The tests cover the cap, per-peer isolation, and slot reuse after a close. The title names the primary change and does not list files or use vague wording.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #4227 requires per-peer registration, release on connection exit, refusal before session tasks, operator visibility, and an integration regression test. In pkgs/id/src/world_net.rs, WorldProtocol::accept calls open_connection with the remote endpoint before creating JoinSet or spawning sessions. It closes and returns on cap refusal, increments connection_cap_refusals, and logs the peer and refusal. PeerConnectionRegistration calls close_connection in Drop, including early-exit paths. The added test covers four connections, refusal of the fifth, isolation for a second endpoint, and slot reuse after close. No narrower-scope exception is needed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within Issue #4227. The test-only active_connection_count helper verifies registration state. connection_cap_refusals exposes the required refusal visibility. The RAII guard, lock-poison refusal path, logging, and integration test directly support connection-cap enforcement.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Nitpick Rename the new test to use the test prefix.

1717-1717: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Rename the new test to use the test_ prefix.

The test accept_enforces_per_peer_connection_cap_and_releases_slots does not start with test_. The documented naming convention requires that prefix for tests in pkgs/id. Other tests in world_net.rs also omit the prefix, so the module is inconsistent. Rename this test to match the convention.

As per coding guidelines: "Naming: Functions snake_case (commands prefixed cmd_), types PascalCase, constants SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE, tests test_ prefix."

Nitpick Throttle the per-accept prune scan, or move it off the accept path.

202-202: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Throttle the per-accept prune scan, or move it off the accept path.

Each accepted connection inserts an endpoint state. Every accept then scans all retained endpoints while holding the mutex that frame charging also uses. Scan cost grows linearly with the number of peers that hold open connections.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/world_net.rs at line 202:
Throttle or move the retained-endpoint prune scan triggered by
`abuse.open_connection` so it does not scan every endpoint on each accept while
holding the mutex used for frame charging. Preserve eventual pruning of stale
endpoint state.
