Fixes #678

bin/agy-proxy.mjs reported failed agy runs as successful stop completions: the stream close handler never checked the exit code (except for the resume retry) and never read its own stderrBuffer, and the non-stream failure branch was gated on empty output.

  • Stream mode: a non-zero exit or a killing signal now ends the stream with a data:-framed error event (agy execution failed: <last stderr line, or a fallback naming the signal / exit code>) followed by data: [DONE]; no chunk claims finish_reason: "stop".
  • Non-stream mode: failure is judged by the exit alone — a partial response no longer masks it; the existing 502 shape is returned (plus a signal field when the child was killed).
  • The resume retry (failed resume with no output retries once as a fresh conversation) is preserved in both modes, and successful runs are unchanged.

New bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs (stub agy at $HOME/.local/bin/agy, the pattern from codex-proxy.test.mjs): success, fail-with-no-output, fail-after-partial-output, signal-killed, and resume-retry cases in both modes.

Verified: new suite 5/5; ablation — the 3 failure tests fail on pre-fix main, success + retry pass both ways; existing suites muse-proxy + codex-proxy + proxy-port 19/19; node --check clean. Manual stub probe on pre-fix main reproduced all four failure shapes from the issue (stream fail-empty/fail-partial → 200 stop, non-stream fail-partial → 200 stop, non-stream fail-empty → 502 control).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Chat requests now report failures when the underlying process exits unsuccessfully, even if it has already produced output. Non-streaming requests return an error response; streaming requests send an error event followed by a completion marker instead of indicating success.
    • Failure messages now include available details, such as the last error output, exit code, or termination signal. Successful requests and eligible conversation retries continue to work as before.

📝 Walkthrough

The proxy now reports nonzero child exits as failures in streaming and non-streaming modes, including when the child produced partial output. Integration tests cover failure causes, successful requests, and failed conversation resume retries.

Changes: agy-proxy failure reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Failure handling and integration tests
bin/agy-proxy.mjs, bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs
Streaming requests receive an SSE error followed by [DONE] when the child exits unsuccessfully. Non-streaming requests return HTTP 502. Tests cover failures with and without partial output, signal termination, successful responses, and resume retries.

Explanation

The changes satisfy #678. In bin/agy-proxy.mjs, stream mode checks non-zero exits and signals, reads the last non-empty stderr line, emits a data: error event, and then emits data: [DONE] without a stop chunk. Non-stream mode now judges failure from the child exit, returns the existing 502 shape for partial output and no output, and includes signal for signal termination. The empty-output resume retry remains in both paths. bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs covers success, both failure output cases, signal termination, and resume retry in both modes.

Explanation

The pull request changes only bin/agy-proxy.mjs and adds bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs. The implementation changes directly address #678. The integration tests provide the required regression coverage, so they are in scope.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include the killing signal in the stream error when stderr is non-empty.

When the child exits by signal and has also written to stderr, the streaming error uses only the last stderr line. The signal name is dropped. The signal fallback at bin/agy-proxy.mjs:491-492 applies only when stderr is empty. The message then names the child's last diagnostic line but not the signal that ended the process, so the reported cause can be misleading. The non-streaming path keeps both values: it returns signal as its own field and stderr separately (bin/agy-proxy.mjs:591-592).

Add a resumed-run stream fixture with an unterminated final step_update.

The partial-output stream fixture at bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs:44 ends its JSON line with a newline. In executeStream, the close handler checks code !== 0 && !hasOutput && allowRetry && targetConvId before it processes the remaining lineBuffer. hasOutput is set only when a complete line reaches processJsonLine.

If a resumed run ends with an unterminated step_update that contains text_delta and then exits nonzero, the guard sees no output. The proxy can then retry as a fresh conversation. A successful retry emits a finish_reason: "stop" chunk. The current fixtures do not generate this input, so the suite cannot detect this regression.

Add a stub branch that runs only when $conv is set. The branch writes the unterminated output and exits nonzero:

Stub fixture for the resumed case
printf '%s' '{"event":"step_update","step_update":{"text_delta":"partial answer"}}'
exit 1

Add a stream test that sends x-conversation-id, so the request reaches the resume branch. Assert the error event and the absence of a finish_reason: "stop" chunk. Keep the newline-terminated partial-output case unchanged.

The existing empty-output retry test asserts only the status, content, and finish_reason. It does not check invocation order. An invocation-order assertion would be a separate, optional addition. It is not part of this fixture change, and the fixture above does not depend on it.

Add a failure test for a non-zero exit that writes no stderr.

Every non-zero exit case in the stub writes to stderr first. The only stderr-free failure is the signal kill. The exit-code fallback agy process exited with code ${code} in bin/agy-proxy.mjs therefore never runs in the failure tests. Removing or breaking that fallback leaves the suite passing. The implementation is correct today. This is a coverage gap in the cause-specific error path.

The suggested test adds a stub case that exits 3 without stderr. It then asserts that the streamed error names the exit code.

190-199: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the initial resume call in the retry test.

The retry test at bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs:184-201 checks only status, content, and finish_reason. The stub sets conv only when --conversation is passed. It exits 3 only when conv is non-empty. If the proxy skips the initial resume, the first call succeeds. Both the plain and stream assertions still pass, so the suite does not detect this regression.

A proxy that resumes but never retries still fails the test. The failed resume returns a 502. The gap applies only to a skipped initial resume.

Record each stub invocation's arguments in a file in the test's temp home. Clear that file before each request in both plain and stream modes. Then assert that the first recorded call includes --conversation conv-123 and that the second call does not. This checks the resume-then-retry sequence that bin/agy-proxy.mjs logs as retrying as fresh conversation at lines 472 and 582.

Make the test stub win over system agy binaries.

findAgyBinary returns /run/current-system/sw/bin/agy before the $HOME/.local/bin/agy stub whenever that path exists. The test does not override the binary, so on such a host the stub is never run. The stub-based assertions then run against the real agy. The test header comment states the opposite of what the code does.

Add a AGY_BIN override in the proxy and set it in the test. The proxy uses AGY_BIN for every spawn, so the override covers all requests.

🐛 Suggested fix

bin/agy-proxy.mjs:

-const AGY_BIN = findAgyBinary();
+const AGY_BIN = process.env.AGY_BIN || findAgyBinary();

bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs:

       XDG_STATE_HOME: path.join(tmp, 'state'),

+ AGY_PROXY_PORT: String(port),
+ AGY_BIN: path.join(home, '.local', 'bin', 'agy')

Also update the header comment at bin/agy-proxy.test.mjs:5-6. It should say that AGY_BIN points the proxy at the stub.
