Fresh installs on Macs pull in Linux and x64 binaries they never use, worktree setup silently copies every package when the pnpm store is on another filesystem, and agents start before async setup ends, so they race it with their own vp i.

Fix

  • Leaner installs. Move supportedArchitectures out of pnpm-workspace.yaml into a .pnpmfile.cjs updateConfig hook that sets it only on win32. #2751 added it so the Windows WSL backend can load Linux native modules from the same node_modules. The comment that said so was lost in #3684, so the pnpmfile restores it. Release scripts stage their own installs in temp dirs with explicit architectures, so they do not change.
  • Cross-device store warning. After install, scripts/setup-worktree.ts compares the device of storeDir (from node_modules/.modules.yaml) with the device of node_modules. If they differ, it prints a loud warning with the fix (pnpm config set store-dir <dir on the worktree's filesystem> --global). Setup does not fail.
  • Setup markers. Setup writes .t3/setup-running (its PID) at start. It replaces it with .t3/setup-done on success, or with .t3/setup-failed and the exit code plus the last 30 lines of install output (or the stack of a thrown error). SIGINT/SIGTERM/SIGHUP also write the failed marker. AGENTS.md tells agents to wait while setup-running names a live PID, and to run vp i themselves when no marker exists (a plain clone or a git-made worktree).

Evidence

Fleet audit (2026-10-20 and 2026-10-21):

  • Mac (Mainbook): the old supportedArchitectures added 142 packages and 2.2 GB to every store and fresh install.
  • bb-1: 169 worktrees each had a full 3 GB node_modules copy, because the store was on ext4 and the worktrees on XFS.
  • Setup race (ClickHouse, 60 days): 90 sessions ran their own vp i in their first 2 minutes, and 15 hit missing modules.

Checked on BeeBox (Linux x64, pnpm 11.10.0):

  • pnpm 11.10 reads .pnpmfile.mjs first, then .pnpmfile.cjs. The lockfile diff is only the new pnpmfileChecksum line. vp i --frozen-lockfile passes. .gitattributes forces LF, so Windows checkouts get the same checksum.
  • Hook output: win32 gives {os:[current, linux], cpu:[current,x64], libc:[current, glibc]}. darwin and linux leave the config unchanged.
  • Throwaway esbuild@0.25.0 installs through pnpm with this pnpmfile: real linux installs only @esbuild/linux-x64. Faked darwin installs only @esbuild/darwin-x64. Faked darwin with the hook branch forced on installs darwin-x64 and linux-x64, so pnpm honors the hook's config.
  • Throwaway mini-worktree with its store in /dev/shm (tmpfs) and node_modules on ext4: the warning prints, and setup still writes setup-done. This worktree (same device): no warning, setup-done.
  • setup-failed is written for a stale lockfile (with the ERR_PNPM_OUTDATED_LOCKFILE tail), a missing T3CODE_PROJECT_ROOT (with the stack), and SIGTERM to the process group. While setup runs, only setup-running exists, and it holds the setup PID.
  • vp lint on the changed files and scripts typecheck pass.

Note: a non-frozen vp i prints Failed to create bin ... vitest warnings. Unchanged main prints the same warnings when it re-resolves, so this change did not cause them.

Windows

Windows behavior does not change on purpose: the hook gives win32 the same supportedArchitectures as before, so WSL dev mode still gets its Linux modules.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR changes platform-specific dependency installation and asynchronous worktree setup behavior, including persistent setup status markers and cross-device store warnings. It also adds a line-level oxlint suppression in the new pnpm hook, so the change requires human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update pnpm platform architecture configuration and worktree setup. Setup now records lifecycle markers, runs installation asynchronously, retains failure output, forwards cancellation signals, and checks pnpm store filesystem placement.

Changes: Worktree dependency setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
pnpm architecture settings
.pnpmfile.cjs, pnpm-workspace.yaml
The workspace architecture restrictions were removed. A pnpm hook adds current-platform and Linux x64 glibc targets on Windows.
Worktree setup lifecycle
scripts/setup-worktree.ts, AGENTS.md
Setup records running, success, and failure states. Dependency installation runs asynchronously and retains the last 8,000 characters of output. Setup forwards cancellation signals and warns when the pnpm store and worktree use different filesystems. The instructions describe how to check setup status or start setup manually.

Setup cancellation is substantially safer, but a subprocess that continues after closing its output streams could still outlive the running marker. Confirm installer subprocess behavior before relying on the marker for concurrent setup coordination.
