Thread snapshots spend about 40% of their JSON on ID strings. IDs are nested, percent-encoded composites (Claude provider turn IDs average 205 characters), and the same few repeat on every row, item, and node. Gzip hides most of that on the wire, but clients still parse every copy, and V8 and Hermes keep one string per copy in memory.

Clients can now opt in to an ID table. On each record of a snapshot or history page, ID fields (id, *Id, *Ids) become indexes into one ids array, so each distinct ID is parsed and stored once. The codec sits in contracts (withRecordIdTable), so the typed HTTP and RPC clients decode it with no other client change. The opt-in follows compactTurnItems: compactIds=1 on /bounded and /history, acceptCompactIds on WS subscribeThread. Old clients never opt in and get the same bytes as today. Old servers ignore the flag and the codec passes their plain responses through. No stored IDs, events, or schema change.

TrimmedString now returns the original string when trim() changes nothing. Hermes copies on every trim(), and every entity ID decodes through it, so without this the decode re-copies every ID and the memory win is gone on Hermes.

Measured on 1,321 real threads through the real codec, on top of #24647's body dedupe (what current clients request), 0 round-trip mismatches. The win is client parse size and memory, not network bytes:

Raw JSON Gzip
All cold opens -35.8% -3.9%
Native top-level threads -36.3% (median 404 → 241 KB) -1.0%
Subagent threads -51.0% (median 146 → 72 KB) -6.2%
History pages (189) -31.7% -0.8%
  • Retained heap after decode (V8): -22% to -37% on typical native threads. Hermes 0.12 on desktop, simulated decode: -35% to -42%.
  • CPU (V8, against main's schema): plain path unchanged; table decode equal or slightly faster; server encode +4% to +15% for opted-in clients only; live events unchanged.
  • Limits: warm opens decode the persisted cache, so they keep per-copy strings. Phone CPU is not measured on a device.

Proof: focused tests for the codec rule, HTTP bounded + history and WS opt-in against the real handlers, the table combined with deduped bodies, and a client decoding a table response; vp run check:changed passes; a real dev server loaded a real thread in the web client with compactIds=1 (440 KB → 270 KB response, thread rendered).

Cross-version proof: a main server and a PR server ran on copies of the same real data (127 threads), each hit by a main-contracts client and a PR-contracts client. Old clients get byte-identical bounded, history, and WS snapshot responses from the PR server (only startup updatedAt stamps differed between the two boots). The main server ignores compactIds and acceptCompactIds. PR clients decode tables to the same values as plain JSON, and live events decode in all four pairs. On the iOS simulator (Hermes), the mobile app decoded real tables for bounded snapshots (519 to 717 IDs) and a history page (1,004 IDs), rendered the threads, and showed a live rename. The web client rendered a thread from the PR server.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces a new ID-table transport codec across shared contracts, server HTTP/WS handlers, and client snapshot loading. Although the format is backward-compatible and well tested, supported clients now request it by default, changing normal product behavior and warranting human review.

Walkthrough

Thread snapshots and history pages can now encode repeated record IDs through an optional ID table. HTTP requests and WebSocket subscriptions expose compact-ID opt-in, while the client requests it for bounded snapshots and history pages. Contract codecs expand table references during decoding, and tests check encoding and decoded equivalence.

Changes: Compact ID transport

Layer / File(s) Summary
ID-table codec and string handling
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2IdTable.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2IdTable.test.ts, packages/contracts/src/baseSchemas.ts
The codec replaces eligible record IDs with indexes into a shared table and expands those references during decoding. Tests cover encoding, decoding, and invalid indexes. TrimmedString now returns the original string when trimming does not change its length.
Thread response contracts
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/contracts/src/environmentHttp.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.test.ts
Bounded snapshots, history pages, and stream snapshot items use the codec. Subscription and HTTP query schemas accept compact-ID options. A contract test checks ID references in known and unknown turn items.

HTTP routes and WebSocket subscriptions enable ID-table encoding when clients opt in. Tests check opt-in behavior and decoded equivalence for snapshots and history pages.

Client requests include compactIds=1 for bounded snapshots and history pages. Thread subscriptions advertise compact-ID support when bounded snapshots are accepted. Tests check the request option and response decoding.

  • pingdotgg/t3code#22372 — The ID table reduces repeated IDs in snapshots, and the string helper avoids returning a new string when trimming does not change it. The PR does not address shell size or IndexedDB scaling.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#24142 — The ID table reduces repeated IDs in bounded and history responses. The PR does not enforce row or byte limits.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#17765 — Compact IDs reduce bounded-response size and decoding work. The PR does not add server timeouts or limit request concurrency.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description has a clear problem statement, a detailed change explanation, and a verification section with measured results, tests, and cross-version checks. It omits the 'Scope and approval' section entirely: there is no linked triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and no justification for skipping one. The template requires that section for every change, so the description is not complete on that point. The rest of the content is strong, but the missing approval link means the description is not fully compliant.

Resolution

Add a 'Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion where a maintainer approved the direction and scope, and include the approval comment. The change adds a new opt-in capability (ID table for snapshots and history pages), so it needs that approval. Alternatively, explain why it qualifies as focused configuration of an established capability, following the template. Also consider tightening the 'Verification' section to state anything that was not checked, such as phone CPU, which the description already notes was not measured. The 'Problem' and 'Change' headings are present but are not labeled with the template's exact headings in the description, so consider adding them.
