feat(cli): npx t3 now steers you to an installed t3 - #25417
npx t3 is the slow, fragile way to run T3 Code, and nothing nudged people off it.
Now T3 Code offers to install t3 and points people to it, without ever breaking a setup that works today. npx t3 still runs exactly the version npm picked.
What changes
npx asks once to install. At a terminal, npx, pnpm dlx, and bunx ask "Install the t3 command?". Enter means yes. Saying no, giving no answer for 30 seconds, or a failed install waits until the next minor release. It never asks in these cases:
scripts, CI, sudo, or TERM=dumb
background jobs
help and version commands, install, and uninstall
when any t3 is already installed
New t3 install links the version npx already downloaded, like install.sh. t3 uninstall removes every link it owns again.
The desktop app installs t3 once, on first launch, into ~/.local/bin or ~/bin only. It no longer writes into Homebrew or system folders on macOS (/opt/homebrew/bin, /usr/local/bin); links older builds left there are still found and removed. Removing it in Settings sticks. If the folder is off PATH, Add to PATH in the welcome setup and Settings appends one marked line to ~/.zshrc (~/.bashrc on Linux, fish config.fish), once.
Docs and setup screens show both installers plus t3 <cmd>. Nightly users are pointed to their installed t3 (for example t3 connect), since npx t3 runs npm's stable build.

Safety fixes the review found along the way
Install scripts:install.sh and install.ps1 used to overwrite any ~/.local/bin/t3. Now they replace only their own link or the desktop app's. The guard also covers symlinked homes, .. paths, folders with wildcard characters ([t3]), and Windows PowerShell 5.1's ANSI reads.
AppImage shim: it now passes SIGTERM and HUP to the CLI, keeps stdin, and waits for the unmount.
Proof
Unit tests: every risky path has a focused test, folded into existing cases where one fits. Each bug fix's test fails on the old code, and mutation checks confirm the folded rows still catch their bugs.
Linux end to end: a clean container covers 20 scenarios with 109 checks, all passing, with no leftover processes. It uses:
real npx, pnpm dlx, and bunx from a local npm registry
the real launcher tarballs
the real release archive, built and smoke-tested like CI and served over HTTP
a real rendered desktop shim
install.sh
The scenarios include scripts, CI, sudo, agent terminals that never answer, background jobs, foreign t3 files, uninstall, broken installs, and Ctrl-C and SIGTERM on a running server.
Real Windows: the windows-tests.yml lane on Windows Server 2025 and PowerShell 5.1 passes. It covers install.ps1 with a José home and a bin[t3] folder, and npx running the .exe that a recorded t3.cmd names. With the pre-fix install.ps1 put back, the same test fails. Runs: 40670763522, 40638427222 (the pre-fix failure).
Why npx does not run an installed t3
An earlier version of this PR made npx t3 hand off to a newer installed t3. Review found two problems. First, pins lost their meaning: npx t3@1.2.3 and a project's locked t3@1.2.3 both ran an installed 1.2.4. Second, a command that exited 126 or 127 could run twice. The handoff, T3CODE_USE_NPM, the desktop shim's version line, and the triage exit-code remap are gone. With a local registry, both pinned cases now run 1.2.3.
A separate PR handles a narrow race. If another program writes a file at the public t3 link at the same moment an upgrade replaces that link, the upgrade overwrites the file.
Known limits
Desktop users who removed the t3 command before this release get it back once.
No macOS machine was available. The macOS terminal check is covered by parser tests only.
When a backgrounded npm exec gets SIGTERM, npm does not pass it on to its children. That is the same without this PR. Ctrl-C and SIGTERM to the launcher both work.
