fix(mobile): pinch wide images from anywhere in the Android viewer - #30929
Android only recognized image-viewer gestures inside the fitted image. A 16000×900 image became a thin strip, so a pinch starting in the black space did nothing.
Change
Move the existing responder onto a window-sized View around the image and loading indicator, covering both the media viewer and the plain file-preview fallback.
The wrapper excludes touches until the image has loaded and its dimensions are available. Android keeps the original native touch target when loading finishes during a gesture, so the viewer cannot activate zoom halfway through that gesture. This extends the existing library patch and updates its lockfile hash. Zoom limits and gesture math are unchanged. The changed module is Android-only; iOS uses Quick Look.
Scope and approval
This qualifies for CONTRIBUTING.md's small, focused fix of an obvious bug. The reported failure in #30815 prevents an existing Android image-zoom gesture from starting outside a thin fitted image. The change expands that existing responder to the viewport and waits for image readiness. It only changes the Android viewer patch and its lockfile hash.
Verification
New recordings with visible touch positions cover before/after black-space pinches in both preview paths, two pinch attempts while the real image response is held, completion at fit, and a fresh pinch after loading. They also show black-space double taps with measured down-request intervals of 154–160 ms, plus forced landscape and return to portrait in both preview paths. A fresh independent evidence review found no remaining proof gaps.
The app requests portrait. Android centers a portrait-shaped app window when its window manager forces landscape. The media image can disappear after forced rotation until its first pinch; the same rendering limitation reproduces on main. The head accepts the pinch in the resized window. This does not claim a full-width landscape app layout.
Verified on corex with a physical POCO F4, Android 14, using T3 Code Dev native fingerprint aba84043a4edb30381916d38ad6a4e7aad2cc74f, Metro with its cache cleared, and an isolated backend. The same pinch starts at screen pixels (540,950) and (540,1450), above and below the strip, then moves to (540,450) and (540,1950). Before it is ignored; after it enlarges the image.
Both MediaImagePreview and the composer's FilePreview fallback passed. Panning from black space, pinching back to fit, swiping between wide and normal gallery images, Media actions, and Close also worked.
A temporary network proxy held the real workspace-image response while pinches were attempted. The controls remained visible during loading; after release, the image appeared at fit and a new pinch zoomed it.
vp run check:changed passed, including affected typechecks and the related two tests. Fresh independent Codex follow-up review found no remaining code issues. Native captures prove the hit-testing change; a unit test of responder props would only mirror the wiring.
Unverified: the reporter's Pixel 10 / Android 17. iOS, web and desktop were not run because this diff changes Android's library module only.
Before: the strip remains at fit after a pinch in the black space. The video ends with a successful control pinch whose fingers start on the strip.
Final head: loading-time pinches leave the controls visible. Releasing the held network response loads the image at fit; a fresh pinch from black space then enlarges it.

Final head: media preview pinch and pan from black space, return to fit, Media actions menu, and Close.
final-media.mp4
Final head: the plain composer preview swipes to the wide image, accepts a pinch and a pan starting in black space, returns to fit, and swipes between the normal and wide images.

Walkthrough
The Android image viewer now uses window dimensions for viewport sizing. Pan handlers apply to a viewport-sized wrapper around the image and loading indicator. Scrolling depends on zoom and swipe-to-close state, and the pan responder handles gesture termination.

Explanation
The title names the main change: Android image viewer pinch gestures now work from the black space around wide images. It follows the conventional commit format and matches the raw summary, which moves the pan/pinch responder to a viewport-sized wrapper. The title is specific and concise.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Objective [#30815]: pinch and pan must work from the black space around a wide image in the Android viewer. Both callers must be covered: MediaImagePreview and the ImageViewing fallback in FilePreview.
Evidence for the change:
The whole-PR summary states that the Android ImageItem now places the pan handlers on a viewport-sized wrapper around the image and loading indicator. The patched library owns this responder, so both callers inherit the change. This addresses the defect in the issue, where the touch area was limited to the fitted image.
The PR description reports on-device results on a POCO F4, Android 14. Pinches starting at (540,950) and (540,1450), in the black space above and below the strip, enlarged the image. The same pinch was ignored before the change. Panning from black space, pinching back to fit, gallery swiping, Media actions, and Close were reported as working in both paths.
Uncertainty:
The on-device results and the check output refer to head 9e8b7c1. The current head is 17c8c36. The incremental diff between these heads was not supplied, so it is unknown whether the verified behavior still holds at the current head. The code summary still describes the responder move, so the core requirement remains supported by code evidence.
Double-tap is an expected behavior in the issue. The PR states double-tap timing is unverified. No on-device or test evidence covers double-tap from black space.
The issue asks that a wide image be zoomable until readable. Zoom limits are stated as unchanged. No readability check was reported.
The commit message mentions waiting for image loading before enabling zoom. The whole-PR summary does not show this behavior, so it is not confirmed.
The core pinch and pan objective from the issue is met by the change and the reported device evidence. The uncertain items are secondary parts of the same objective.
Android ImageItem: window dimensions derived during render; the pan handlers move to a viewport-sized wrapper around the image and loading indicator. In scope. This is the core fix.
ImageItem: scrolling disabled while zoomed or when swipe-to-close is disabled. Supports the gesture change by avoiding conflicts with list scrolling.
ImageViewing: viewport size from window dimensions, list keyed by viewport size, animated header and footer values keyed by viewport size, and useAnimatedComponents(resetKey?) signature. These keep the gesture wrapper and paging correct when the viewport changes.
Scroll-derived index clamped at zero, state updated only on index change, initial list position uses current index, and zoom callbacks and scroll events from replaced instances ignored. These support gallery swiping, which the PR reports as verified on device at the earlier head.
ImageLoading: Android window dimensions. Supports the enlarged loading container.
usePanResponder: window dimensions read during render, and gesture termination routed through release handling. This is in the same responder that must cover the full screen. The PR says gesture math is unchanged. No gesture-math change is shown.
pnpm-lock.yaml: patch hash update. Expected for a patch change. This file is excluded by ignored_files (rule !**/pnpm-lock.yaml), so its content was not reviewed. It does not establish any coding requirement.
No change is shown to be unrelated to the Android image viewer gesture area, its paging, or its loading state. The PR states that iOS, web, and desktop code is not changed. The commit message's loading-gated zoom is not visible in the summary, so it could not be checked for scope. No focused repository inspection was available, so this assessment relies on the supplied summary.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is thorough and follows the template. It has a Problem section (Android gesture responder only covers the fitted image, so a pinch in black space does nothing on wide images), a Change section (responder moved to a window-sized View around the image and loading indicator, covering MediaImagePreview and the FilePreview fallback, with a wait-for-load guard), a Scope and approval section (argues it qualifies as a small, focused fix of an obvious bug and links issue #30815 as the reported failure), and a detailed Verification section with physical-device testing, before/after recordings, the tested commit hashes, and a note on what was not verified (Pixel 10 / Android 17, iOS, web, desktop). The template's model/harness attribution line is present at the end. Minor gaps: the Scope section argues for a small-fix exemption rather than pointing to a maintainer-approved issue or discussion, and the template asks that the issue be triaged; the issue link is given but its triage/approval status is not stated. The verification section is long and somewhat dense, but it states observed results and gaps clearly.

Added the missing device evidence for 17c8c36e1de930bb9705762f0884873cd125794b. All captures use the physical POCO F4 on Android 14, the compatible T3 Code Dev client with native fingerprint aba84043a4edb30381916d38ad6a4e7aad2cc74f, a cleared Metro cache and this worktree's isolated backend. Before captures use main 9e85538535c8553901351112ab02dd1dd62db5ee. Android Show taps and Pointer location are visible throughout. No code changed during this follow-up.
Black-space pinch, both preview paths
Both fingers begin above and below the fitted 16000×900 strip, at screen pixels (540,950) and (540,1450), and move outward to (540,450) and (540,1950). The pointer traces show both positions. Main ignores the gesture; the head enlarges the image. The composer recordings enter through the normal image and swipe to the wide image at the second gallery index.
A task-local HTTP proxy holds the real delay-wide.png asset response before forwarding it to the backend. In the recording, two visible two-finger pinches happen while the image is loading. The controls remain visible. Releasing the response loads the image at fit; a fresh pinch from black space enlarges it. The proxy recorded a 22.176-second hold. This is a real uncached image request, not a mocked loading flag.
head-loading.mp4
Double taps
Each recording holds the fitted image on screen, double-taps in black space to zoom, then double-taps again to return to fit. A task-local input helper calls the installed AgentOS Input.gesture twice without the tool's accessibility-settling delay. Each tap lasts 50 ms, with 100 ms between release and the next down request. Monotonic down-request intervals were 154/158 ms for the media clip and 157/160 ms for the composer clip. The touch indicators are visible in the videos. Zoom still uses the library's existing absolute scale of 2, so the jump on an extremely wide image is large.
The app and viewer request portrait. For this stress check, Android's window manager temporarily ignored that request and locked the display to landscape. The POCO F4 centers the app in a portrait-shaped window. These recordings cover that actual behavior, a black-space pinch in the resized window, return to portrait and a fresh pinch. They do not claim a full-width landscape app layout.

Existing limitation: the workspace media image can disappear after forced rotation until its first pinch. I repeated the same rotation on main, where the fitted media image also disappears, including after closing and reopening the viewer. The head's first black-space pinch makes the image visible and enlarged. The composer image stays visible and zooms. This PR does not change the existing forced-rotation rendering behavior.

The reporter's Pixel 10 on Android 17 remains unverified. iOS, web and desktop are outside this Android-only module change. The existing changed-file check output and passing CI at this exact head remain linked in the PR body.
Rechecked against current main dd5f98eeecad5db5b10314296221df115f130fbd, with PR head still 17c8c36e1de930bb9705762f0884873cd125794b.
The base move in #31016 overlaps this PR only in pnpm-lock.yaml. The merge is clean. I installed and ran vp run check:changed dd5f98eeecad5db5b10314296221df115f130fbd on the exact combined tree, local verification commit edb5b6e17cc041a09b0812c6fdfd8cf79772f1d6, tree 460868eb0888e8a616ae7845b4e0c3352e8f9dbe. Installation, unused-patch validation, format, typechecks for 40 packages and the related two tests passed. I then restored the PR branch; no PR commit changed.
The combined tree has identical mobile, client-runtime, contracts and shared source trees. Its mobile runtime dependency closure has the same 22 workspace importers, 845 dependency snapshots and 845 package resolutions. Four package records change peer declarations only. The image-viewer patch hash and installed Android ImageItem file are unchanged. The F4 recordings at this head therefore still cover the viewer that the combined tree runs. No new device run was needed for this base move.
The live PR remains open, non-draft and mergeable, with auto-merge off. Required checks pass at this head and all review threads are resolved. The existing forced-rotation limitation and unverified Pixel 10 / Android 17 remain as documented.
Rechecked head 17c8c36e1de930bb9705762f0884873cd125794b against main a21d788752695764028e6d26ba924f3963e05806. Both merges are clean; the PR head is unchanged.
The earlier base move to df70f505a3c3e3ad7ea0fde2ad2c01a6d57d2297 replaced crypto/token implementations and the typechecker. It did not change the Android viewer, either caller, React Native 0.88.0, React 19.3.0, image-viewing 0.2.2, gesture-handler 3.3.0, reanimated 4.7.1, or expo-image 58.0.15. I verified its exact combined tree 72b61f714af6e5e3d54dd15dff36944283e467de on corex with a physical POCO F4, Android 14, a freshly installed cached native client d2bd0a0e576d34d3298554061bbf2492f71069d3, cleared Metro cache, and the isolated worktree backend.
Fresh pairing succeeded. The signed 16000×900 workspace image loaded and a pinch from black space enlarged it. The composer FilePreview fallback also loaded that image and accepted the same pinch. Both recordings show Android's native multitouch positions. The source changes since that device run only add Claude MCP App handling and update the server-only Claude SDK from 0.3.284 to 0.3.316; mobile, image delivery, and gesture code are unchanged.

The latest combined-tree changed-file checks passed on tree c4b0874cf3bdef423f6865cca2563f81bdeb7c28. Focused AssetAccess and AttachmentUpload tests passed all 46 tests. The check output below identifies the tested merge trees. These supplement the exact-head before/after, delayed-loading, double-tap and rotation recordings, whose gesture code is unchanged.
Unverified: Pixel 10 / Android 17. The existing forced-landscape media rendering limitation remains as documented in the PR. No new iOS, web or desktop run was needed for this Android-only patch. Test apps/processes and temporary device files were cleaned up; the prior native client was restored and the F4 released.

Closes #30815
Problem
