Phase 13 first slice: F13.1 shell contract, F13.2 SSH frame transport, F13.3 SSH-over-iroh, and the F13.7 design (implementation gated). No new frame kinds are added anywhere in this PR.
Gate (F11.12): journal-format management has NOT landed (only the JOURNAL_VERSION refusal exists; see comment on #227). Per the plan, this PR therefore adds no new frame kind. Presentation tiers/focus/kitty/client-provider frames stay reserved in the contract.
Gates not started:#786/#787 implementation (gated on F11.9 baseline, #542, still open) and #788/#790 implementation — not touched, per brief.
Bugs found by the new conformance check and fixed here: #836 (terminal shells sent frames the host refused). Also filed from the F13.7 design pass: #837–#841.
Evidence
Before:id world join --command-mode/stats etc. → host reply invalid world frame; SSH cmd:/stats → already joined; contract did not exist. After: the same sessions pass id world contract --check with 0 violations; /stats returns module_info.
Tests run locally (rustup 1.99.0 toolchain, cargo test --features ssh):
Web: bun run test (389 passed incl. 15 new contract tests), bun run typecheck, biome clean.
Manual: system OpenSSH client through id world ssh-tunnel played roc-counter (count=0 → /input → count=1, /stats ok).
cargo fmt --check on touched files: clean. Clippy (--all-targets --features ssh): no new warnings in touched files (pre-existing crate warnings remain).
Not run: full cargo test --all-features suite and nix flake check locally (time); PR CI re-runs them (previous run's nix check was cancelled at ~60m as infra timeout, not a code failure).
Additive transports and a new contract file; no frame kinds, no journal changes, no guest ABI changes. The one host behavior change: joined sessions now answer info (authorized by the session's own capability, like records), and SSH exec id-world/1 is accepted where exec was previously always refused. SSH servers stay opt-in via --world-ssh-port.
Write the client-server frame protocol down as data:
pkgs/id/contract/shell-contract.v1.json names every client and server
frame, its fields and bounds, its class (journaled event, ephemeral,
query, control, admin, delegation), the session phases it may be sent
in, the transports, and the projection's seed rule. Version 1 is the
/id-world/1 protocol as it exists on main; no frame kind is added
(F11.12, #227, still gates new ones).
- shell_contract.rs validates frames and whole transcripts against it;
`id world contract [--check FILE]` prints it or checks a recording.
- Drift tests pin it to the host: client variant names come from serde's
own error, server variants from an exhaustive match, required/nullable
fields from serde round trips, limits from the host constants.
- Session tests run real joined, query, upload and one-reply sessions
through the check, re-assert the F11.11 seed-leak rule, and execute
the journaled-vs-ephemeral classes against the world sequence.
The first conformance run found three terminal-shell bugs, fixed here
(#836): the `id world join --command-mode` pump sent frames without
their capability and frame types that do not exist; `/stats` in an SSH
`cmd:` session was refused as "already joined" (the host now answers
`info` in the joined phase); and wide SSH terminals sent out-of-range
resizes (now clamped to the contract bounds).

…odel (F13.7)
Design only; implementation is gated on F12.4 (provider registry) and
F12.6 (audit), and on F11.12 for its new frame kinds. Answers who grants
with a two-key rule (world admin grant under the ceiling, plus the
client user's local per-provider opt-in), keeps the guest import-free,
journals consumed replies as existing System events, and picks a
bounded local file read as the first provider.
Refs #789, #837, #838, #839, #840
The PR adds a versioned shell contract, validators in Rust and TypeScript, a transcript-checking CLI command, and conformance coverage for world sessions and shells. It also updates joined-session and SSH command handling. A separate design document proposes client-side capability providers without implementing them.

Before the provider design is implemented, tighten its file-containment, audit, and refusal-code contracts. Consider sharing the resize limits to prevent future drift.

A TypeScript port of the contract check (web/src/shell-contract.ts) and a
vitest that drives the unmodified world.ts over a fake WebSocket: join,
resize, input, paste, chat, paged records, module upload and compile.
Every client and server frame goes through a Conformance check. The page
markup is read from the real template. Also clarify that a shell may
send joined-phase frames before the snapshot arrives.

Track join acceptance before treating errors as nonterminal
For a transcript containing a client join, a server error saying join denied, and then a client chat, the checker reports no violations. Sending join immediately changes the phase to Joined, so server() no longer recognizes the error as terminating the opening handshake. However, joined() in world_session/mod.rs returns immediately after denying the capability. Track the pending join separately so a rejected join closes the checked session and subsequent client frames are rejected.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Limit seed-redaction checks to program installation events
When a world publishes a public record such as {"seed":42}, this recursive check rejects the host's valid records response as a leaked installation seed. Records are arbitrary JSON values (world::Records), and records_session() copies their keys and values unchanged; the actual client projection in project_event_for() only zeroes WorldEventKind::ProgramInstalled.seed. Restrict this check to installation-event seed fields so unrelated application data named seed, including nested record data, does not make otherwise valid sessions fail conformance.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Describe and validate typed nested client payloads
A transcript containing {"type":"compile","admin_token":"admin","files":[{}]} passes conformance because FieldType::Array only checks that the value is an array. The host cannot deserialize this request: ClientFrame::Compile.files is a Vec<CompileFile>, whose elements require string name and content fields (world_session/types.rs:415–417). The same gap allows malformed typed signed and profile objects to pass. Describe these nested structures in the contract and validate them, so a shell is not certified conformant while sending requests the host rejects before execution.
Share the viewport bounds with the host check and the contract.
MAX_VIEWPORT_WIDTH and MAX_VIEWPORT_HEIGHT duplicate the literals in handle_client_frame (width > 500 || height > 200 in world_session/mod.rs). They also duplicate contract/shell-contract.v1.json. No test ties the three copies together.
If the host bounds change, the SSH shell clamps to the old values. It then sends resize frames that the host refuses or that the contract rejects. This is the bug that this PR fixes for wide terminals.
Define one pub(crate) constant pair in world_session. Use it here and in handle_client_frame. Assert it against the contract in shell_contract/tests.rs.

Make rate-limit errors a stable contract.
outside_ceiling covers both persistent ceiling failures and transient rate or in-flight limits. Because reason is advisory, clients cannot rely on it for retry behavior.
Use a separate rate_limited code, or make reason: rate required and stable before implementing the F11.13 integration.

Add a phase marker and replacement rule for the two provider-use records.
The host writes a provider-use event at decision time and again at completion or timeout. Both writes use the same nonce. The field list has no phase or lifecycle marker, and the document does not say whether a later record replaces an earlier one. Replay of the F12.6 log cannot tell the decision record from the completion record. The client log has the same gap for receipt and completion records.
Host-only refusals do not need a matching client entry. Only allowed and client-refused cases write a client entry.
Suggested fix

nonce, the correlation key between the two logs).
+- `phase` (`decision` or `completion`). Replay treats a `completion` record with+ the same `nonce` as the final state for that request. Replay treats a+ `decision` record as superseded by its `completion` record.

Make the non-Linux containment mitigation mandatory.
The contract requires resolution to stay beneath the root, but the non-Linux path still permits a canonicalise-then-open symlink race. `id world join --via ssh [user@]host[:port]` replays the same session as
the iroh path, byte-for-byte, over an SSH exec channel (`id-world/1`)
for constrained networks and jump hosts.
- world_ssh: exec_request now accepts only `id-world/1`, one session per
connection, and hands the channel's bytes to run_session through
SshFrameIo (cancel-safe recv over FrameBuffer). A flooded backlog ends
the session instead of dropping framing bytes.
- Client: connect_frames + SshTarget + HostKeyCheck pin the host key by
SHA256 fingerprint (--ssh-host-key) or known_hosts; no TOFU. The SSH
login grants nothing; frames carry their own capability.
- frames: encode_frame is the single envelope writer; write_frame_to /
read_frame_from / FrameBuffer serve non-QUIC byte streams.
- world_net::route_frame is shared, so client frames are identical
bytes on both transports.
- Tests: lockstep iroh-vs-SSH session equality on one world, refusal of
other commands/untrusted keys/oversized frames, journal untouched by
the transport, plus an end-to-end CLI join over SSH.
Refs #784
`id serve --world-ssh-port N` now also registers /id-ssh-tunnel/1: each
iroh stream is one raw SSH connection forwarded to the host's SSH
server on loopback (SshTunnelProtocol, bounded streams, loopback only).
`id world ssh-tunnel <node>` exposes it as a local listener
(127.0.0.1:2222 default) or --stdio ProxyCommand, so an unmodified
`ssh` client reaches a NAT'd host. The tunnel grants nothing: SSH auth
inside it is unchanged (no identity bypass).
Verified with the system OpenSSH client against a locally served world
(raw + cmd: modes, /input and /stats), plus tests:
ssh_reaches_the_world_through_the_iroh_tunnel (russh over iroh) and
test_world_ssh_tunnel_carries_join_via_ssh (CLI composition).
Remaining in #785: the iroh-over-SSH fallback when UDP is denied —
needs a non-QUIC transport that does not exist yet; F13.2's exec
transport covers joins there meanwhile.

Forward tunnels to the configured SSH listener address
When the server uses --bind ::1 or a specific non-loopback interface address, direct SSH works but every SSH-over-iroh connection is immediately dropped: commands/serve.rs:1043 binds the SSH listener to the configured address, whereas this forwarding connection always targets IPv4 loopback. Preserve the listener's address rather than only its port, and select a reachable destination for that binding.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Clear the exec sender only when its own channel closes
When a client opens a second session channel on an existing exec connection, its exec request is correctly rejected, but closing that rejected channel also clears the first channel's self.exec. This drops the active frame session's sender, so SshFrameIo::recv() returns Inbound::Closed and the original channel is closed as well. Track the exec channel ID and only clear its sender for EOF/close notifications belonging to that channel.
The merge with main regressed two baseURLs to literal ports (18747
muse, 18748 commandcode), failing the treefmt 'proxy port fallbacks'
check (#435). Restore the {env:MUSE_PROXY_PORT:-18747} and
{env:COMMANDCODE_PROXY_PORT:-18748} forms from main; the file now
matches origin/main exactly and check-proxy-port-fallbacks.sh passes.

Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Blast Radius: contained
Additive transports and a new contract file; no frame kinds, no journal changes, no guest ABI changes. The one host behavior change: joined sessions now answer
info(authorized by the session's own capability, likerecords), and SSH execid-world/1is accepted where exec was previously always refused. SSH servers stay opt-in via--world-ssh-port.
