fix(tools): show images from MCP and OpenCode outputs - #30389
Images returned by MCP tools and OpenCode tools, including the HTML preview screenshot, did not appear in expanded tool details. JSON tool arguments and results also lacked syntax highlighting.
Change
Preserve image content alongside structured MCP results and extract inline images from OpenCode tool attachments. Render those images in web tool details. Add JSON highlighting for valid JSON tool arguments and results across web, desktop, and mobile, and HTML highlighting for preview input.
The CI Test job also escapes non-ASCII console output to work around repeated runner crashes while validating this PR. The runner failed with EncoderFallbackException on multiple workers and published no test log. Escaping the output allowed CI to publish its test failures, which exposed two Pi assertions affected by the new formatting behavior. The same tests run, and pipefail preserves their exit status.
Scope and approval
Requested directly by a maintainer in T3 Code, including provider compatibility, syntax highlighting, verification, and squash merge after CI and review. This fixes missing output from existing tool calls and formatting in their details. The CI logging workaround is included because repeated runner failures blocked validation of this change.
Verification
Focused tests cover MCP and OpenCode image outputs and JSON detection, including multiple JSON documents and invalid JSON. Pi coverage also verifies that native file text remains readable when its result includes metadata, while screenshots display structured JSON beside their images. The iOS client check confirmed that the HTML preview details show its screenshot and formatted JSON. All 729 affected tests and changed-file checks passed.
vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, Knip, GraphQL validation, affected-package typechecks, 10 focused test files with 729 passing tests, and the React compiler checks. Earlier counts of 619 and 623 came before subsequent fixes and the main-branch update. Local probes of the CI log pipeline verified exit codes 0 and 7, stderr forwarding, and emoji escaping.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Tool images from MCP and OpenCode are preserved for display, with improved structured-output highlighting. Existing image-type, count, and serving-size safeguards limit exposure; the CI change only sanitizes test output.

Walkthrough
MCP adapters now preserve image content in tool results. OpenCode passes file attachments through live and backfilled tool output. Mobile and web inspectors render output images separately and highlight recognized JSON and HTML, alongside TypeScript highlighting for JavaScript REPL code.
A shared helper selects MCP result output and retains content with images when structured content is present. Claude, Codex, and ACP use the helper. Cursor projects successful MCP text and image parts into completed tool output. Tests cover image output and dynamic-tool lifecycle updates.
OpenCode converts supported image data-URI attachments into tool output. Live and backfilled completed tools pass file parts through the output path. Tests cover accepted and rejected image inputs.
Tool text detection and highlighting packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/itemDetail.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/itemDetail.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/V2ItemInspector.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-work-log.tsx
A shared helper recognizes JSON documents. The inspectors use it to highlight recognized JSON, render HTML arguments with HTML highlighting, and keep JavaScript REPL code highlighted as TypeScript. Tool output images render separately from text.

Explanation
The title "fix(tools): show images from MCP and OpenCode outputs" matches the main change. The PR preserves image content in MCP results, extracts inline images from OpenCode tool attachments, and renders those images in web tool details. It follows the conventional commit format. The title does not mention the JSON and HTML syntax highlighting work, which is a secondary part of the changeset. That omission is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description includes all required sections. It clearly explains the problem, the changes across components, the scope and maintainer approval, and focused verification results. It also reports limitations and CI logging details. The description does not include a direct approval link or embedded UI screenshots, but these are minor omissions and the overall description is complete.

Keep structured MCP details visible when preserving images.
codexMcpToolOutput now preserves both fields so images remain available, but turnItemOutputText formats that envelope from content only. This changes the base behavior and can hide structured details such as temp: 21 in both inspectors. Keep content for image extraction, but add a display path for the normalized envelope that formats structuredContent instead of discarding it.

Preserve external MCP tools as dynamic tools.

Preserve external MCP tools as dynamic tools.
For an external MCP name such as mcp__acme__edit_document, resolveT3McpToolId returns null because it recognizes only T3 server aliases. The edit check then selects file_change, which drops result.files. The web work-log and asset consumers only read images from dynamic_tool items, so the inline image is absent from the expanded tool details.
Carry the MCP classification into openCodeToolTurnItem, or recognize the generic OpenCode MCP namespace before the edit check. Keep native OpenCode edit tools on the file_change branch.

Update openCodeToolTurnItem to recognize generic OpenCode MCP tool names,

native OpenCode edit tools on the existing file_change branch.

Verified both findings in the latest CodeRabbit review and fixed them within the existing tool-output scope.
Structured MCP metadata now remains the displayed result when image content accompanies it. Regression cases cover image-only content, a prose summary, and duplicate JSON content while preserving the image resource.
Explicit mcp__… names now stay dynamic tools before OpenCode's native edit-name heuristic. The OpenCode 2 replay covers mcp__acme__edit_document with an inline image. Native edit classification is unchanged.
Both regressions failed before the fixes and now pass. All 623 affected tests pass.
Holding the merge because the Test job has crashed in GitHub Runner on three attempts of the current commit, including two reruns on different Blacksmith workers. The repeated annotation is System.Text.EncoderFallbackException: Unable to translate Unicode character \\uD83D at index 500 to specified code page, with stack frames in GitHub.Runner.Common.HostTraceListener and GitHub.Runner.Worker.Program. The job reaches the Test step but never records its completion; this does not establish that the suite passed or that an application assertion failed.
All 624 affected local tests and changed-file checks pass. Macroscope approved the current commit, CodeRabbit reports minimal risk with no actionable merge blocker, and all four review threads are resolved. The product diff remains within the requested scope. No CI bypass or unrelated runner/workflow change was made. The runner failure needs to be resolved and Test/Check must pass before squash-merging.
