feat(server): list Claude models reported by Claude Code - #30511
Replaces https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/13913 by @otavio, whose commits are kept on this branch. Thanks to them for the original change and for working out Claude Code's cold-cache gateway discovery against a real gateway. https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/13913 couldn't be updated in place: it comes from an organization-owned fork, and GitHub doesn't let maintainers push to those.
Claude Code can run behind an Anthropic-compatible gateway (ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL with CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_GATEWAY_MODEL_DISCOVERY=1). Its /model then lists the gateway's models, but T3's Claude picker only offered the bundled catalog and the user's custom models.
There was a second problem. Claude Code reports gateway models only from $CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/cache/gateway-models.json, which it refreshes in the background after startup. T3's capability probe ended the Claude process as soon as startup finished, so with a fresh config dir that cache was never written, and the models never showed up however often T3 probed.
Fix
The capability probe keeps the models list from initializationResult(). The provider snapshot adds every reported id the catalog doesn't know as a regular (non-custom) row.
Matching ignores case and a [1m]-style suffix, and also checks against catalog aliases, resolvedModel, and the user's custom models.
The full catalog is used, not the version-filtered one, so a model the installed CLI is too old for isn't re-added as a bare row.
Claude Code's default pointer is skipped.
A discovered model's Reasoning options are the effort levels Claude Code reports for it, with "Default" first. Default sends no effort, so Claude Code picks the effort itself. No fast-mode toggle is offered.
The probe still returns as soon as Claude Code has started. When discovery is on, though, it lets that Claude process run for Claude Code's discovery timeout (CLAUDE_CODE_GATEWAY_MODEL_DISCOVERY_TIMEOUT_MS, default 3 s) before stopping it, so the cache gets written.
Both settings are read from the process environment and from Claude's settings.jsonenv, where gateway users usually put them. Unquoted values there are accepted.
Only the machine-level probe waits. Per-folder workspace probes still stop Claude right away.
Compared with https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/13913, the turn runtime is untouched. The adapter already passes an unknown model id and a valid effort straight to Claude Code, so the catalog changes to the driver, adapter and text generation were removed, along with the forced High default.
Proof
A dev server, with a Claude instance pointed at OpenRouter's Anthropic API using a fresh, sandboxed config dir. Only that config dir's settings.json set the gateway and discovery settings, with the flag unquoted.
Before (main): the first probe on a fresh config dir. On main, this is all a gateway user ever sees.
After: the next provider refresh lists the gateway's models.
A real turn on "Google: Gemini 3.8 Flash" with Low. The Claude process ran with --model anthropic/google/gemini-3.8-flash[1m] --effort low. After switching back to Default, the next turn ran with no --effort.
Control run, a direct SDK probe against the same gateway with a fresh config dir:
Stopping Claude right after startup (main's behavior), twice in a row: 5 models reported, no cache/gateway-models.json written.
Keeping it running for the discovery timeout: the cache is written, and the next startup reports the gateway's models.
Tests
One status test covers which reported models are added or deduplicated, and their options.
One probe test checks that the probe passes on the models Claude Code reports, and that the Claude process stays alive for the discovery timeout when the settings come from settings.json.
Both fail without the change. vp run check:changed passes, except ClaudeSkills.test.ts › merges plugin enablement…, which fails on main too on the machine I ran it on.
Known limits
Gateway models appear on the probe after the one that triggered discovery: the next provider health check or refresh. Gateways usually don't answer get_usage, which skips the 5-minute capability cache.
Claude Code itself keeps only gateway ids matching /(claude|anthropic)/i.
Model: Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code, in T3 Code. Tests and implementation passes by Opus and Fable subagents, reviews by Opus and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Gateway-discovered models (ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL with
CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_GATEWAY_MODEL_DISCOVERY=1) now appear in the Claude
picker. The capability probe keeps init.models and appends ids the
bundled catalog does not know as built-in rows. Configured custom models
with the same slug keep their settings-owned row.
Closes#13875
Claude Code reports supportsEffort and supportedEffortLevels for
gateway-discovered models, but T3 gave them empty capabilities, so the
picker hid the effort menu. Their descriptors now come from that report,
and the driver feeds the last probe's models into the adapter catalog so
the chosen effort reaches Claude Code at runtime.
Claude Code reports gateway models from its cache file and refreshes that
cache in the background after startup. The capability probe aborted the
subprocess right after initialization, so with a gateway slower than a few
hundred milliseconds discovery never finished, no cache was written, and the
models never reached the picker.
When gateway discovery is enabled, the probe now returns at once but keeps
the subprocess alive for Claude Code's discovery timeout before aborting it,
so the next probe reports the gateway's models.
Discovered models were deduped against the catalog without their context-window suffix but remembered with it, so gateway/model[1m] followed by gateway/model, or the same id repeated, produced duplicate rows. Remember the same normalized ids the lookup checks.
Models Claude Code reports behind a gateway with model discovery on only need
to reach the Claude provider snapshot: the adapter already passes an unknown
slug and an explicitly chosen effort through verbatim, so the per-query model
catalog hook on the adapter, the driver's reported-models Ref and the text
generation wiring are removed. Discovered rows take their effort options from
what Claude Code reports with no default, so Claude Code keeps its own default
effort for that model, and no fast mode option, which is first-party only.
The probe keep-alive for cold gateway caches no longer mutates a captured
variable: the grace is read with the initialization result, scheduled on
success and skipped on failure.

Walkthrough
Claude capability probes now collect models reported by the Claude Agent SDK. When gateway discovery is enabled for a usage probe, the probe waits for the configured timeout or three seconds by default before aborting. Provider status combines reported, version-supported, and custom models.
The probe reads gateway discovery settings and delays abort for the configured grace period when discovery is enabled for a usage probe. Initialization results include reported model information. The test checks the default three-second delay and subsequent abort.
Reported model conversion and status assembly apps/server/src/provider/ClaudeModelCatalog.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ClaudeProvider.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts
Reported models are filtered and deduplicated against catalog and custom model IDs. Eligible models include reported effort options and are combined with version-supported and custom models in provider status. The status test checks model names, custom flags, deduplication, and effort options.
pingdotgg/t3code#16672: This PR adds effort options for reported models, but does not change the runtime compilation paths described in the issue.
pingdotgg/t3code#24214: This PR retains catalog-ID deduplication and does not add availableModels or ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_*_MODEL handling described in the issue.

…ateway serves
Upstream merged a narrower version as pingdotgg#30511 after v0.1.7.
On the next base, keep only what it lacks: the effort ladder from the
gateway's /v1/models and dropping retired models.
When Claude Code runs behind an Anthropic-compatible gateway
(ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL plus CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_GATEWAY_MODEL_DISCOVERY=1), its
/model lists the gateway's models, but T3's Claude picker showed only the
bundled catalog and manual custom models, and options picked for custom
models never reached the query.
The capability probe keeps init.models and appends ids the catalog does not
know as built-in rows, with a Reasoning select from supportedEffortLevels and
Fast Mode from supportsFastMode. The driver feeds the last probe's models into
the catalog the adapter compiles selections against, so a chosen effort is
sent to Claude Code. With discovery enabled the probe keeps its subprocess
alive for Claude Code's discovery timeout so a cold config dir still finds the
gateway's models.
With gateway model discovery on, Claude Code keeps only each model's id and
name and reports the same five effort levels for all of them, so the picker
offered levels a model does not have and defaulted every one to High.
The Claude driver now reads the gateway's /v1/models itself, with the base
URL, token and custom headers Claude Code would use (its settings.json env
over the process environment), and takes each model's ladder from
supported_effort or reasoning_options. A model the gateway serves without
reasoning gets no effort picker; a reasoning model it publishes no ladder for
keeps what Claude Code reported. A discovered model now defaults to its
highest level, which is what a gateway runs it at when not told otherwise,
so sending the default does not lower the effort a model runs at.
A Claude snapshot kept every model it had ever listed, because only ACP
Registry, Codex, OpenCode and Antigravity replaced their inventory after a
successful probe. With gateway model discovery the list comes from the
gateway, so retired or renamed gateway models stayed in the picker forever.
Claude is ready and authenticated only when Claude Code's initialization
answered, and that answer lists every discovered model, so treat it like
the ACP Registry: a completed probe replaces the list, a pending or failed
one keeps it.
