fix(server): diffs keep submodule changes under diff.submodule=log - #29852
With diff.submodule=log set in user or global git config (Pro Git recommends it), or diff.submodule=diff, a turn that moves a submodule or nested repo pointer shows up in the turn's file list, but the turn diff and the review panel have no entry for it. Git prints Submodule sub a..b: (or the submodule's inner files as sub/a) instead of a diff --git a/sub b/sub block, and the client patch parser drops it. When the submodule is the only change, the diff shows "Unsupported diff format. Showing raw patch." Numstat still lists sub, so the file list and the diff disagree.
Change
Pass --submodule=short to the checkpoint diff in GitVcsDriver.ts and to REVIEW_DIFF_ARGS in GitVcsDriverCore.ts. This uses git's default gitlink format (-Subproject commit … / +Subproject commit …) no matter what the user's config says. It follows the same pattern as PATCH_RENDER_PREFIX_ARGS and diff.suppressBlankEmpty=false (#29579), which already override user diff config that changes the patch format clients parse. Numstat output does not change.
Scope and approval
Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so no prior issue: one flag added to two arg lists that already exist to protect the parsed patch format, plus one extended test. Overlap search: no PRs mention diff.submodule. #20282 (closed) asks to show changes inside submodules, which is a different request. The open #29826 edits capture's git add in GitVcsDriver.ts, not these lines.
Verification
Red on main: I extended CheckpointStore.test.ts › "keeps the patch format clients parse when the repository changes it" with diff.submodule log and a nested repo whose HEAD moves between checkpoints. It failed with expected 'diff --git a/README.md b/README.md\ni…' to contain 'diff --git a/sub b/sub', and the received patch ended with Submodule sub 4552548..246c0b4:\n > moved.
Green: vp test run src/checkpointing/CheckpointStore.test.ts passes 10/10. vp test run src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts -t "patch format|review diff|Review" passes 39 tests.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, and typecheck pass. Tests pass 311/312. The one failure is "keeps generated worktree folders short without changing long branch names", which also fails on clean main on macOS (/var vs /private/var) and is unrelated.
Review panel, real git 2.50.1, with the same flags as REVIEW_DIFF_ARGS against the working tree:
$ git -c diff.submodule=log diff --find-renames … HEAD
Submodule sub c987cdb..4aa93f7:
> c
$ git -c diff.submodule=log diff --find-renames … --submodule=short HEAD
diff --git a/sub b/sub
index c987cdb..4aa93f7 160000
--- a/sub
+++ b/sub
@@ -1 +1 @@
-Subproject commit c987cdb…
+Subproject commit 4aa93f7…
Numstat prints 1 1 sub in both cases.
Not checked: no review-panel test was added, because the existing review test would need its own nested repo setup and it isn't a one-line addition. No real-client capture was taken.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change preserves submodule pointer changes in checkpoint and review diffs when user Git settings request another format. It only normalizes read-only diff output and does not modify repository data or Git configuration.

Git checkpoint and review diffs now explicitly request Git’s short submodule format. The checkpoint test creates a nested repository, adds a commit between checkpoint captures, and checks for submodule output in the diff.
Changes: Submodule diff formatting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Request and verify short submodule output apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/checkpointing/CheckpointStore.test.ts
The diff arguments request short submodule formatting. The test adds a nested repository and checks for a submodule diff header and a subproject commit line.
pingdotgg/t3code#29579: Both changes address Git diff formatting controls used by client patch parsers.

Add a focused review-preview test for submodule output.
REVIEW_DIFF_ARGS now affects getReviewDiffPreview for both --numstat and --patch, but the new test exercises only CheckpointStore.diffCheckpoints. A regression in the review-preview path can therefore pass the current tests. Add a nested gitlink case to apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts with diff.submodule=log and assert the returned patch contains diff --git a/sub b/sub and +Subproject commit. Reproduced on github/main (61c3794c32) in a separate installed worktree. Created the project through the app, initialized Git through its control, and had Codex create the parent/nested repositories and baseline commits. A second turn moved only the nested gitlink. With diff.submodule=log, the file list showed sub +1 -1, while both Open diff and Changes showed "Unsupported diff format. Showing raw patch."
Stopped main before starting the exact PR head, installed dependencies, and reused a copy of that app-created development state. The same turn and same hashes rendered as a parsed sub diff in both views.
Ran fresh Codex turns on the PR with diff.submodule=log and then diff.submodule=diff. Both checkpoint and Changes diffs retained the gitlink. A normal README edit rendered alongside it with matching file counts. Split/stacked layouts, scope switching, and refresh also worked.

Native iOS/Android, the Electron shell, macOS/Windows, relay/tunnel connections, and providers other than Codex were not exercised on this Linux VM. This pass used a real nested repository tracked as a gitlink; it did not separately exercise a registered .gitmodules checkout. No full repository check suite was run locally.
