fix(observability): every app reports its own environment and release channel - #24340
Telemetry could not tell a dev, preview, nightly, or stable build apart. The server and desktop main process reported no deployment.environment.name unless an operator set one, the UI only knew development vs production (so Vercel previews and nightlies looked like production), and mobile carried its variant only inside t3code.client.surface. WSL backends also dropped an operator's OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES.
Change
Each process reports its own build: the server, desktop main process, UI, and mobile app carry t3code.release.channel (dev, stable, nightly, preview) and deployment.environment.name (development, production, staging for preview).
packages/shared/src/releaseResource.ts holds the two small pieces every surface shares:
releaseChannelOf(version): X.Y.Z → stable, -nightly.YYYYMMDD.N → nightly, -preview.YYYYMMDD.N and desktop PR builds (-pr.<number>.<run>) → preview. cliReleaseChannelOf is left untouched because the CLI updater depends on it.
releaseResourceAttributes(channel, operatorAttributes): maps channel → environment and lets a non-empty operator value win (Effect otherwise lets code attributes beat OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES).
The server uses the telemetry channel the release workflows already stamp into its build (__T3CODE_TELEMETRY_CHANNEL__, the same value analytics reports), so a server not built by a release workflow reports dev. Desktop in development and web under Vite dev also report dev.
Web PR previews set VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL=preview, leaving APP_VERSION alone for the version-skew check.
Mobile maps its build variant to a channel and goes through the same helper.
WSL forwards OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES through WSLENV.
No existing key is renamed or removed.
Verification
releaseResource.test.ts: one table for version → channel (incl. the desktop PR shape) and one for channel → attributes with operator override.
DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts: OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES reaches WSL (fails without the fix).
Runtime: isolated server exporting OTLP to a local capture endpoint, from source and from a bundle built with T3CODE_TELEMETRY_CHANNEL=nightly.
from source (no release workflow):
deployment.environment.name = development
service.version = 0.1.2
t3code.release.channel = dev
OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES=deployment.environment.name=qa,region=eu:
deployment.environment.name = qa
region = eu
t3code.release.channel = dev
built with T3CODE_TELEMETRY_CHANNEL=nightly:
deployment.environment.name = production
service.version = 0.1.2
t3code.release.channel = nightly
Not run: a live Vercel preview deploy, a packaged desktop PR build, a real WSL distro, or mobile builds. Those paths are covered by the helper table.

Walkthrough
The shared package now classifies release channels and builds telemetry resource attributes. Server, desktop, web, and mobile tracing use those attributes. Preview build configuration and desktop WSL environment forwarding are updated, with related tests and documentation.
The shared package exports release-channel classification and resource-attribute helpers. Relay tracing accepts caller-provided attributes. Tests and documentation describe the mappings and configuration.
Server and desktop resource attributes apps/server/src/config.ts, apps/server/src/telemetry/AnalyticsService.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopObservability.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts
Server and desktop telemetry resources use release attributes and configured resource attributes. Analytics uses the server configuration channel. Desktop forwards OTEL_RESOURCE_ATTRIBUTES to WSL, and the test checks the forwarded value.
Web release channel inputs apps/web/src/vite-env.d.ts, apps/web/vite.config.ts, apps/web/src/observability/clientTracing.ts, .github/workflows/web-preview.yml
Vite exposes VITE_RELEASE_CHANNEL to client code. Web tracing uses it to select release attributes, and the preview workflow sets it to preview.
Mobile tracing resource attributes apps/mobile/src/features/observability/tracing.ts
Mobile tracing maps recognized app variants to release channels and adds the resulting resource attributes.
The supported preview build preserves its release channel, so this change is mergeable.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused observability fix that consistently labels existing telemetry by build channel and environment across server, desktop, web, and mobile surfaces. Its runtime effect is limited to metadata and operator-attribute propagation, with focused tests and no product workflow or schema changes.

A server run from source without a dev URL reported stable/production.
It now uses the telemetry channel the release workflows already stamp,
the same value analytics reports.

dev:built runs vp build --watch, so import.meta.env.DEV is false. APP_VERSION then defaults to 0.1.2, which maps to stable and production. scripts/dev-runner.ts already marks this workflow with T3CODE_BUILT_DEV, but vite.config.ts does not expose that flag to the browser bundle.

Update the Vite configuration’s `define` values to expose the existing
`T3CODE_BUILT_DEV` flag to the browser bundle, then include
`import.meta.env.T3CODE_BUILT_DEV` in the development condition for
`RELEASE_CHANNEL` in `clientTracing.ts`. Keep the existing preview and stable
channel selection unchanged.
