feat(web): UI design overhaul, with the new look behind a Beta toggle - #24865
A designer's feedback on the app was blunt: "the fonts, the border radius, the icons, the font hierarchy." A design council of four models agreed. Against the Claude Code and Codex desktop apps, they scored main at about 7/10: noisy sidebar, mismatched composer controls, an uneven details panel, and faint or ambiguous settings.
This PR replaces the earlier design PRs with one change set. Each change came out of council review on fresh screenshots of real data. Every round was scored against Claude Code and Codex, until the reviewers had T3 at 9.5+ and ahead of both apps.
The most visible changes sit behind Settings → Beta → New design, which is off by default, so nobody opens the app to a different sidebar and composer with no way back. Smaller fixes ship to everyone.
#24810 (blue accent pass). Its blue "you are here" tint and blue composer focus ring are not carried over. The council pushed toward neutral rows and controls.
#24883 (the New design toggle) is folded into this PR.
New design toggle
The toggle sets data-redesign on <html>. A new Tailwind redesign: variant handles most styling. A few components read redesignEnabled where markup or behavior differs.
Behind the toggle:
Sidebar rows:
Gray project and agent icons, with color on hover.
Read titles at 75%, with quieter metadata (a darker step in dark mode).
A neutral PR number.
The project label at normal weight.
Shelves:
Collapsed headers read "Snoozed 1 ›", not "Snoozed (1)" with an up chevron. The chevron direction is shared, so the details panel's "Previous agents" header follows the toggle too.
Composer:
The flat "Compact next" / "Keep full" control replaces the amber "Compact 661k" pill.
A gauge effort icon replaces the brain.
The editor rests at two lines.
Hero: the project picker's dotted underline only shows when the toggle is off.
Details panel:
A muted, outlined app icon.
Empty drafts hide Push and zero Changes.
Appearance: "Colored project icons" only appears while the toggle is on.
On for everyone (small, or hard to split):
Inter on Windows/Linux, the radius scale, 1.75 icon strokes, and contrast tokens.
Settings hierarchy and copy.
Branch truncation.
Panel row alignment, two-line PR titles, and "33/34 checks".
The placeholder, divider removal, and diff colors.
What changed
The full redesign, as seen with New design on.
Type, radius, icons:
Inter on Windows and Linux, so medium and semibold weights render. macOS keeps SF Pro.
A 4/6/8/12/16 radius scale.
1.75 icon strokes.
Sidebar:
The title leads each row. Read titles are at 75% and brighten on hover. Open and unread titles are full white.
Metadata sits one step below the title.
Agent logos and inactive project icons are gray until hover. Settings → Appearance → Colored project icons keeps project icons in color.
PR numbers are neutral. Only the state icon keeps its color.
Branch names cut at a whole letter, with a flush "…".
Shelf headers read "Snoozed 1 ›".
Hover actions swap instantly.
The worktree glyph before a branch is readable, not faded.
Composer:
Rests two lines tall.
One neutral control style, with no divider lines.
"Compact next" / "Keep full" shows its armed state.
A gauge icon for effort.
One placeholder everywhere.
The checkout strip matches the composer in both themes.
Details panel:
Each row has one leading icon, and the machine glyph is legible.
The editor app icon is muted at rest.
Divider lines show on hover only.
PR titles wrap to two lines, with "33/34 checks" below.
"Previous agents" sits on the icon column with a trailing count.
Empty drafts hide Push and zero Changes.
Settings:
16px semibold section titles.
Boxed scope pickers.
Matching chevrons.
Balanced description wrapping.
The inheritance marker shows only when something overrides the value.
Clearer labels:
"Resume after usage limits" and "Snooze until limits reset". These also changed on mobile, in settings search, and in the user docs.
The automatic model state is part of the Model description.
New thread: the project name drops the dotted underline and underlines on hover.
Color:
Chat text is at 90%.
Light mode uses darker status and diff tokens, a balanced emerald-700 / red-700 pair, and a darker user bubble.
The timeline minimap is quieter.

Opus, Muse and Sol put T3 ahead of both apps in every category. Gemini's own table has two exceptions: Codex is above T3 on spacing (9.7 vs 9.6) and ties it on consistency (9.7). Round 1: Opus found two redesign: specificity bugs: colored PR numbers in the dark sidebar, and a resting composer that was too tall. Both are fixed. Sol's two small items are also fixed: Restore defaults now resets the toggle, and search hides the icon-color setting in classic.
Round 3 checked the last fixes:
The panel app icon comes back to full opacity on hover in dark mode.
Git status errors stay visible on empty drafts.
stroke-* utilities win over the icon stroke default.
"Previous agents" is now a panel row instead of a components/ui variant.

- Sidebar rows lead with the title: provider logos and inactive project
favicons are gray, PR numbers are neutral, metadata shares one muted
color, status labels use darker tokens, and hover swaps instantly.
- Branch names cut at a word ("t3/clone-re…machine").
- Composer: no separators, Compact matches its neighbors, one placeholder
everywhere, checkout strip no longer looks disabled.
- Details panel: one leading icon per row, hairlines on hover only,
"33/34 checks", lineage row matches other rows, gray app icon at rest,
empty drafts hide Push and zero Changes.
- Settings: inheritance marker hides for values set here, clearer labels
for automatic model and usage-limit toggles.

checkout strip that matches the composer in both themes.
- Details panel: two-line PR titles, "Previous agents" on the icon
column with a trailing count, legible machine glyph, muted app icon.
- Settings: boxed scope pickers, matching chevrons, balanced descriptions,
automatic model state folded into its description.

After widening to a width that fits the text but not the text plus …, fitHead keeps the label truncated. The existing data-overflow leaves the ::before ellipsis in the shrink-0 tail while scrollWidth is measured, reducing the head's available width and keeping the overflow check true. Clear data-overflow before measuring, then set it from the resulting check.

Summary
Redesign and appearance settings packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/*, apps/web/src/routes/__root.tsx
Client settings add default-off redesign and project-icon color options. Settings controls, search filtering, reset handling, and root attribute synchronization use these settings.
The web app adds the Inter variable font and a redesign CSS variant. Theme tokens, Markdown styling, icon strokes, and shared control styles also change.
Sidebar and environment controls apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/*, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar*.tsx, apps/web/src/components/GitActionsControl.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ThreadStatusIndicators.tsx, apps/web/src/components/EnvironmentMachineIcon.tsx
Sidebar headers pass counts separately and display them according to collapse state and redesign setting. Thread rows read the project-icon color setting, and environment, Git action, and status displays change.
Composer controls and content apps/web/src/composerPlaceholder.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/Composer*.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TraitsPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsFontPreviews.tsx
The composer uses a renamed default placeholder and updates its controls, surface, and history labels. Editor sizing, button states, preview placeholder, and traits-picker icons also change.
Thread detail rows support wrapped pull-request titles, and lineage groups use row-style headers. Related picker, card, timeline, Markdown, pull-request status, and limited-thread labels and descriptions also change.
MiddleTruncate refits text after layout and resize, clips the head to available space, and selects word-aligned split points when possible. Tests cover split-selection cases.
pingdotgg/t3code#24837 — Changes related web and mobile UI behavior, including font, color, composer, sidebar, details-panel, settings-copy, and documentation updates.
pingdotgg/t3code#24776 — Supplies related web typography and base UI token changes, including Inter, radius, icon stroke, and color styling.
pingdotgg/t3code#24148 — Updates limited-thread settings copy across mobile, web, and settings search.
The redesign remains mergeable with owner awareness, but Git-action feedback, one sidebar appearance preference, and a settings search result may behave inconsistently until the open concerns are addressed.

Apply sidebarProjectIconColors to slim rows.
This preference is used only in the card-row icon condition. The variant === "slim" branch returns earlier and still applies opacity-40 grayscale to inactive project icons. When a user enables the setting, the collapsed sidebar remains gray.
Apply the same condition to the slim icon class, or share the icon styling between both variants.

Move the thread-details row header out of components/ui.
The row variant exists only for the thread-details panel. Its doc comment says it "matches the thread details panel's plain rows." Its only caller is the lineage group label, which is part of the thread-details relationships panel. The icon prop was added for this variant. The shared primitive therefore carries a feature-specific look, which the components/ui rule does not allow.
Move the row header into a component under apps/web/src/components/chat/, next to ThreadRelationshipsControl.tsx. Remove the row variant and the icon prop from CollapsibleSectionHeader, along with their branches. Update the lineage group label to use the new feature component.
