refactor(web): the theme store and diff worker pool stop syncing the theme through effects - #25007
useTheme ran an effect in every consumer that re-applied the stored theme. Every theme write, storage event, and system-appearance change already applies the theme before it notifies, so the effect only repeated that work once per mounted consumer. The shared diff worker pool got theme changes through DiffWorkerThemeSync, a component that rendered null and existed only to run an effect. Every DiffWorkerPoolProvider also re-rendered on each appearance change to feed it.
Change
useTheme: drop the redundant applyTheme effect.
useTheme: add subscribeRenderedAppearance / getRenderedAppearance, the non-React form of useRenderedAppearance (stored theme plus live preview).
DiffWorkerPoolProvider: the shared pool subscribes to the rendered appearance when it is created and unsubscribes when it terminates after the idle TTL. It follows the theme for as long as it lives. DiffWorkerThemeSync is deleted, and providers no longer read the appearance.
useDiffWorkerPool() takes no theme argument. The pool reads the current appearance when it is created. PullRequestCodeTab is updated to match.
What this improves
Sync removed: one effect per mounted useTheme consumer, plus the null lifecycle component and its effect in every DiffWorkerPoolProvider.
Renders avoided: DiffWorkerPoolProvider (one per diff, code preview, guide stop and context chip) no longer re-renders on a theme change. Its children re-render from their own theme reads as before.
No bug fix is claimed.
Behavior changes
A failed desktop setTheme bridge call used to be retried the next time any useTheme consumer mounted, because the effect called applyTheme again. Now it is retried on the next theme change. The error is still logged the same way.
The diff pool now applies a theme change while it sits idle (no provider mounted, inside the 30 s TTL). Before, it waited until the next provider mounted. Both end in the same theme. The only difference is when setRenderOptions runs.
Render scenarios: useTheme is rendered in the covered web scenarios (mount thread, switch thread). DiffWorkerPoolProvider renders when a thread shows diffs or code previews. The coordinator will fill in the numbers.
Verification
vp run check:changed: everything passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 34 packages, 159 test files / 2882 tests).
Render metrics: pending — the harness PR adds them
…theme through effects
useTheme ran an effect in every consumer that re-applied the stored theme on
mount and on each snapshot change. Every theme write and storage/system
change already applies the theme before it notifies, so the effect only
repeated work already done, once per mounted consumer.
The shared diff worker pool got theme changes through DiffWorkerThemeSync, a
component that rendered null and existed only to run an effect. Every
DiffWorkerPoolProvider also re-rendered on each appearance change to feed it.
- useTheme: drop the redundant effect.
- useTheme: add subscribeRenderedAppearance/getRenderedAppearance, the
non-React form of useRenderedAppearance (theme plus live preview).
- DiffWorkerPoolProvider: the pool subscribes to the rendered appearance when
it is created and unsubscribes when it terminates. It follows the theme for
as long as it lives. DiffWorkerThemeSync is gone, and providers no longer
read the appearance.
- useDiffWorkerPool takes no theme argument. The pool reads the current
appearance when it is created.
Effects kept: DiffWorkerReady's initialize effect (another unit handles it).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained refactor of theme synchronization between the web theme store and shared diff worker pool, removing redundant effects without introducing a new capability or schema change. Runtime differences are limited to synchronization timing and retry timing within the existing theme/diff path.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
The diff worker pool now uses rendered appearance to set its initial theme and track theme or preview changes. The hook no longer accepts a theme argument. When the last consumer releases the pool, a 30-second timer triggers cleanup.
Added helpers to read the rendered appearance and subscribe to theme and preview changes. Removed the effect that reapplied the snapshot theme.
Shared pool theme lifecycle apps/web/src/components/DiffWorkerPoolProvider.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx
The shared pool reads and tracks rendered appearance, updating its render options when the theme differs. The hook no longer takes a theme argument. When the last consumer releases the pool, a 30-second timer unsubscribes from appearance changes, terminates the pool, and clears the shared entry if it is still current.

If a worker theme update fails, the diff may keep its previous theme despite a later appearance notification. The impact is narrow, but the retry path should be fixed or accepted before merging.

When a worker rejects setRenderOptions, WorkerPoolManager has already stored the new theme, but that worker still uses the old theme. applyDiffWorkerTheme catches the rejection. A later rendered-appearance notification with the same diff theme then returns at the equality check and does not retry the worker update. Preserve a failed-update state or provide an explicit retry path so the next notification can reapply the theme.

Review comment at @apps/web/src/components/DiffWorkerPoolProvider.tsx around
lines 35 - 48:
Update applyDiffWorkerTheme so a rejected setRenderOptions does not leave the
stored theme appearing successfully applied; preserve failed-update state or add
a retry path that lets the next notification reapply the theme despite the
equality check. Keep the existing behavior for successful updates and continue
reporting failures through DiffWorkerError.

Problem
useThemeran an effect in every consumer that re-applied the stored theme. Every theme write, storage event, and system-appearance change already applies the theme before it notifies, so the effect only repeated that work once per mounted consumer. The shared diff worker pool got theme changes throughDiffWorkerThemeSync, a component that renderednulland existed only to run an effect. EveryDiffWorkerPoolProvideralso re-rendered on each appearance change to feed it.Change
useTheme: drop the redundantapplyThemeeffect.useTheme: addsubscribeRenderedAppearance/getRenderedAppearance, the non-React form ofuseRenderedAppearance(stored theme plus live preview).DiffWorkerPoolProvider: the shared pool subscribes to the rendered appearance when it is created and unsubscribes when it terminates after the idle TTL. It follows the theme for as long as it lives.DiffWorkerThemeSyncis deleted, and providers no longer read the appearance.useDiffWorkerPool()takes no theme argument. The pool reads the current appearance when it is created.PullRequestCodeTabis updated to match. What this improves
useThemeconsumer, plus the null lifecycle component and its effect in everyDiffWorkerPoolProvider.DiffWorkerPoolProvider(one per diff, code preview, guide stop and context chip) no longer re-renders on a theme change. Its children re-render from their own theme reads as before.Behavior changes
setThemebridge call used to be retried the next time anyuseThemeconsumer mounted, because the effect calledapplyThemeagain. Now it is retried on the next theme change. The error is still logged the same way.setRenderOptionsruns.Effects
