Problem

Desktop previews retained Playwright focus emulation after their thread was hidden, so their timers continued at about 20 Hz. Switching to another thread with Browser closed left those native guests running at their visible rate.

Change

Scope focus emulation to pending browser commands, used tabs during active agent turns, and live screencast sessions. Release each hold when its owner ends. Temporarily use the existing rendering activity path while a hidden screenshot or stream needs pixels, then return the guest offscreen. Preserve the server-tab identity during navigation so capture activity reaches the correct guest.

Scope and approval

Fixes #15579
GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/15579

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. No new setting or persisted state.

Verification

Focused desktop preview tests passed (210), server browser/run-execution tests passed (77), and web preview bridge/surface/state tests passed (20). After the final navigation identity fix, Manager and DesktopBrowserHost tests passed again (79). Scoped typechecks, lint, formatting and diff whitespace checks passed.

Native Linux/X11, Electron 44.9.3: clean initial hidden fixtures measured about 20 Hz on main and 1 Hz on the candidate. A real agent snapshot after URL-bar navigation returned fresh nonblank pixels while another thread's composer retained focus and its text. More than 30 seconds after capture, the guest measured below 1 Hz.

Evidence: full native report, recordings and frame index, reproduction drivers, seed and raw measurements.

Native Linux/X11, light, 1440×900, DPR 1 Before After Diff 0 Diff >16/255
Other thread selected, Browser hidden Before After Zero threshold, amplified Threshold 16
Revision b3d382e f1c7a8d Same pair Same pair

Timing proof is in the before recording and after recording. The candidate recording starts at 08:17:11 UTC; input/pause/resume starts at 08:30:30, recording/viewer overlap at 08:32:42, and the untouched-control quiet sample at 08:37:42. The stills index the native surface; they do not establish timer cadence. Their visible differences are sidebar ages and caret.

Authenticated viewer frames advanced, and both a normal close and an abrupt renderer exit returned the candidate guest to approximately 1 Hz after 31 seconds; baseline remained approximately 20 Hz. The final post-capture comparison measured A at 0.99988 Hz and untouched E at 0.58326 Hz. A real agent input/select, a 20-second browser-command-free shell pause, resume, hidden navigation and reopen retained the entered value. The shell pause is not a measurement of model thinking.

The evidence pack is partial: successful remote viewer input, native recording/PiP permutations, real cancellation/overlap, and backend restart/destruction remain unverified. API recording produced a playable video, but the surviving viewer stopped advancing after recording ended; a matched baseline investigation also reproduced recording-stop freezing a viewer with the native tab visible. Baseline hidden recording timed out or froze before stop, so exact hidden overlap parity remains unverified. Baseline stop recording and drivers/logs. Observer-contaminated B/D samples and fixture-reset samples are excluded and retained in the raw report. Initial external Playwright observations were also excluded because the observer itself enabled guest focus. External native recording was 8 fps and cannot exclude sub-frame flashes.

GNOME/Wayland and macOS are unverified. Timer measurements establish cadence, not CPU or memory savings.

…dden preview guests

Reproduces issue 15579: Playwright enables Emulation.setFocusEmulationEnabled on
every page it connects to, and the CDP relay forwards it to the guest. Chromium
then treats the guest as captured, so a preview the panel hides never throttles.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Playwright enables focus emulation on every page it connects to, and the CDP
relay forwarded it to the guest. Chromium counts a focus-emulated page as
captured, so a preview the panel hid kept its timers at full rate.

The relay now acknowledges Playwright's request without forwarding it. The
desktop host emulates focus itself while the server drives the tab (for five
seconds after its last command) or streams it with a screencast, and waits
for the change before forwarding the command. A released relay ends its
screencast hold.

…ing command

…s settle

Focus emulation released 5s after a command arrived, even while that command
(an evaluation awaiting the next frame) was still pending. Each command now
holds focus until it settles, and the idle window starts from completion. A
released relay or a new document ends every hold, the same points where the
screenshot guard gives up on an unanswered capture, so a command Chromium
never answers cannot keep a hidden guest unthrottled.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The server tells the desktop when a thread's agent turn starts and ends,
model thinking included and background commands excluded. Tabs the agent
uses during the turn stay focused through its pauses between tools. The
turn's end also ends holds on commands Chromium never answered, such as a
timed-out screenshot of a hidden guest, and a detached CDP session (a
closed viewer) drops the holds of commands it sent.

…n, turn end, and screencast stops

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…current screenshot

A screenshot that waited on focus emulation could still be sent after a navigation
had started the next one, putting two captures in flight. It now checks it still owns
the screenshot turn, relay and document right before sending.

A turn now holds focus only on tabs the agent drove with input, navigation or
evaluation, not Playwright housekeeping, and a turn whose start arrives after its
first command still holds the tab that command used.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Electron composites no offscreen guest, so a screenshot or screencast of a
hidden preview tab never gets a frame and stays pending, keeping the guest
captured at 20Hz. The host now reports while a screenshot it is taking or a
screencast is pending, the Manager carries it on the tab state as capturing,
and the client holds the existing surface activity lease, which paints the
guest behind the app until the capture ends or its hold is dropped.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… for

Navigating rebuilt the tab's state without its server tab, so once a user
loaded a URL the Manager could no longer match the host's painting, pointer,
or detach events to it. A hidden guest the agent then captured never painted,
its screenshot timed out, and it stayed captured at 20Hz.

A queued screenshot from a detached viewer still starts and can leave the guest focused and painting indefinitely if the capture never settles. takeScreenshot checks only whether the relay is still current, so dropSessionHolds cannot invalidate that queued callback; invalidate queued work for the detached owner or check its lifetime before starting the hold.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces broad production changes to preview focus, rendering, CDP session handling, and agent-turn orchestration rather than a narrowly contained fix. A queued screenshot from a detached viewer can still start and potentially leave the guest focused and painting indefinitely if capture never settles.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes support the cadence fix for hidden preview tabs in #15579. Each area maps to that goal. CdpRelay.ts and DesktopBrowserHost.ts add owner-scoped focus emulation holds, a no-op for guest focus emulation, painting state for hidden captures, and cleanup on navigation, detach, and relay release. PreviewAgentActivity.ts, RunExecutionService.ts, runtimeLayer.ts, ProviderReplayHarness.ts, DesktopBrowserChannel.ts, ServerBrowser.ts, and server.ts pass agent-turn state from the server to the desktop host, so focus holds apply to tabs used during active turns. contracts desktopBrowser.ts and ipc.ts add the turn command and the capturing field needed by that path. Manager.ts and usePreviewBridge.ts use capturing state to keep the browser surface active during screenshots or streams. Manager.ts also preserves serverTab across navigation, which the PR states is needed to route capture activity to the correct guest. Test changes cover these paths. No unrelated feature, setting, or persisted state appears in the reviewed changes. The PR description reports no new setting or persisted state.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #15579 has two expected-behavior requirements. (1) Hidden preview tabs in unselected threads should be throttled, frozen, or discarded. The PR meets this part. Focus emulation is now held only for pending browser commands, used tabs during active agent turns, and live screencasts. Holds are released on owner end, and the native measurements report about 1 Hz for hidden guests versus about 20 Hz on baseline. (2) Previews should also be closed eventually, for example when the thread is idle, archived, or deleted, and should not keep a full renderer running for the rest of the session. The PR does not implement this. The PR summary states it does not describe eventual closure. The diff of apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.ts adds only the capturing flag, serverTab preservation on navigation, and browser-host listeners. No idle, archive, or delete close path appears in the reviewed changes. The guests remain running at about 1 Hz for the session. The PR also uses the Fixes link for #15579, which would close the issue without this requirement met. Requirement (1) is satisfied; requirement (2) is an explicit, unmet coding requirement.

Resolution

Implement eventual closure or discard of hidden preview tabs that the user cannot see. Cover at least the idle, archived, and deleted thread cases named in #15579. Add automated tests for each case. Alternatively, narrow the linked-issue scope with the issue owner so that the PR does not claim full resolution of #15579. Adjust the Fixes reference to match the scope that is actually delivered.

Preserve tab usage when replaying an active turn.

When the desktop re-announces tabs, dropRelay clears tab.agentUsed. Replaying active: true restores only agentTurns. After pending work settles, releaseFocusWhenIdle releases focus because it requires both tab.agentUsed and agentTurns. A later agent input can set agentUsed, but focus can expire during the active turn's pause before that input arrives.

Preserve agentUsed during re-announcement, replay the active state, and re-enable focus for preserved tabs when the replayed turn arrives.

Key the effect to primitive thread identifiers.

stableThreadRef is a new object on every render. Its dependency change runs the effect cleanup and releases the current capture activity. Acquiring that activity updates activityByTabId, which the host component observes and can cause the render that triggers this cleanup. The replacement effect does not replay capturing: true, so the hidden guest can stop painting while capture is pending.

lines 103 - 110:
Update the effect containing `createCaptureActivity` to depend on the primitive
`environmentId` and `threadId` values instead of the freshly created
`stableThreadRef` object. Keep `runtimeTabId` and `tabId` as dependencies so the
effect only resets when a thread or tab identifier changes.

… speed (#25184)

Focus emulation is now held only while a relay command is pending, the agent used the tab during its turn, a screencast is live, or a held screenshot waits its turn. Hidden guests throttle again. Takes over #24806.

* feat(mobile): mobile:install --session installs into an agent-device session

For devices opened elsewhere (a device pool, cloud, or remote host), install
the cached dev client for this checkout's fingerprint through the caller's
agent-device session, from the caller's workspace (agent-device scopes
session ownership to it). It never builds; without a shared build it names
the next step. --abi picks the Android build, --metro opens it.

* fix(mobile): native client fingerprints match across macOS and Linux

Generated android/ios projects and the Expo config's extra section (env-

so a Linux VM never found a Mac's build in the shared cache.

* feat(mobile): run the chrome e2e across poses on the device pool

`vp run mobile:e2e` now leases iOS and Android devices from the Simlock pool
(SIMLOCK_AGENT_DEVICE_URL + AGENT_DEVICE_DAEMON_AUTH_TOKEN) instead of booting
local simulators, and walks each of 12 poses (phone sizes, iPads, a fold,
a tablet, dark mode, largest text) through the app: thread list, a thread,
scrolling, typing, back, settings, then rotation or folding.

Every screen gets generic layout checks that need no per-screen code: app in
front, no error screen or launch dialog, no fixed control cut off by the
screen edge, no sibling controls stacked, nothing under a system bar, no
input under the keyboard. Transitions keep the video check for tabs lagging
the screen, now measured against the recording's own first and last frames.
Afterwards a headless Claude reviews each pose's screenshots for what the
checks cannot see, and the findings land in the same report grid.

`mobile:install --session` now has the session's host download the dev
client from the shared cache with the read-only key, instead of uploading it
through the gateway (13 s instead of 10+ minutes for an APK).

* chore(mobile): e2e poses for current devices, Duo and landscape fixes

Poses now cover iPhone SE, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo folded and unfolded,
iPad Pro 13" in both orientations, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro Fold folded,
unfolded and unfolded landscape, and Pixel Tablet in both orientations.
Landscape poses rotate once the app is up (a rotation during launch is lost)
and check that the screen really is wider than tall. Taps fall back to the
element's centre when agent-device refuses a covered ref, and a gateway
whose workers briefly reconnect is retried.

* fix(mobile): select the correct draft after adding a project (pingdotgg#24269)

* fix(mobile): mobile:install no longer requires --prepare

required and every mobile:install failed with "Missing required flag".

* fix(mobile): e2e landscape poses rotate for real on tablets and folds

agent-device names rotations relative to the device's natural orientation,
which is landscape on the Pixel Tablet and an unfolded Fold, so
"landscape-left" turned them portrait. The runner now asks for a shape and
tries each rotation until the screen has it. It also prepares each platform's
dev client before leasing, rides out longer worker drops, and skips the
Duo poses by default until agent-device can fold Simlock's simulators.

* fix(board): migration 031 boots a fresh database after upstream drops projection_state

Upstream v0.1.3's migration 063 drops main.projection_state, so board
migration 031's watermark carry-over failed on any new install. Skip the
carry-over when the table is gone. Also port the deleted MCP registration
test into a board-owned test.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(t3o): record the v0.1.3 sync; board copy names upstream's renamed settings pages

seams.md gains the v0.1.3 sync notes and its inventory, workflow and debt
tables are brought up to date. Settings → Connections is now Settings →
Environments upstream, and authorized clients moved to Sharing & access,
so the board's worker copy and guide say so.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(t3o): retire the desktop menu test's inventory row (deleted upstream)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(board): background-wait tests follow upstream's awaited-monitor rule

Upstream pingdotgg#24610 holds a monitor only when the agent waits on it; the
board's thread state delegates to that rule, so its tests mark the
monitor awaited and cover the unawaited case.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(board): two board tests track upstream's bare-repo guard and sweep timing

Upstream's VcsProcess sets safe.bareRepository=explicit, so reading the
bare test remote needs --git-dir. The draft-merge test advanced the clock
to exactly the rung's end, between two sweep ticks; it now waits one tick
past it, which is what the behaviour promises.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(t3o): v0.1.3 merge log entry

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(board): draft-merge retry tests advance to the first sweep tick past the rung

The click-at-0 test needs only RUNG_ONE; the click-at-20s test needs the
tick at 4m30s, ten seconds past RUNG_ONE from the click, across the whole
±60s jitter envelope.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(board): worker copy names upstream's Environments and Sharing & access pages

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(board): two merge leftovers caught by typecheck and lint

boardThreadState.test.ts follows upstream's awaited?: true schema, and
boardWorkspace.ts drops a no-control-regex disable the rule no longer needs.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(board): repo-root test runs and board test hygiene after the v0.1.3 sync

The fork's root maxWorkers cap clashed with upstream's new root test.projects
list, so it now applies only to per-package runs. The board lint deferral no
longer switches off the wall-clock and real-time-wait test rules; the eight
board test sites that tripped them use fixed epochs or the router's load promise.
