fix(pi): short-lived Pi processes no longer lose rotated OAuth tokens - #30187
T3 stops the pi --mode rpc processes it starts for status and workspace discovery, text generation and forks as soon as they answer: SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after 1 s, or taskkill /T /F on Windows. At launch, Pi starts a background catalog refresh that also renews expired OAuth credentials. If the stop lands mid-request, the provider has already spent the single-use refresh token, auth.json keeps the spent one, and the next refresh fails with invalid_grant. With ChatGPT sign-in, the login dies after the first idle hour while a client is connected (#30182).
Change
buildPiRpcLaunch({ …, shortLived })
--mode rpc [--no-session] <user launch args>
+ --offline # when shortLived, unless the launch args already have it
[--no-extensions] [--no-tools]
--offline skips Pi's network work at startup. Token refresh on the request path and model calls are unaffected. Discovery then lists the catalog Pi has stored (models-store.json), which thread processes still refresh. --offline has existed since Pi 0.55.1, and T3 needs 0.80.5 or later. No contract, setting or migration change.
Scope and approval
Fixes#30182. One problem: Pi processes that T3 stops early start network work at launch.
This is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug: 7 non-test lines in packages/provider-pi, no new setting or default, and threads launch exactly as before. Surfaces: provider-pi spawn arguments only. No client, contract, MCP or docs change.
Not included: a gentler stop. Pi's shutdown waits for the refresh neither on SIGTERM nor when stdin closes, so a gentler stop needs Pi's fix first (earendil-works/pi#11692). This PR does not touch rpc.ts and is independent of #30025.
Reverting is safe: the change keeps no state, and the blast radius is limited to the four short-lived Pi launches.
Verification
vp test run in packages/provider-pi: 155/155 pass.
Extended cases: both discovery launches (machine and workspace) and the fork launch carry exactly one --offline. The thread launch carries none and no PI_OFFLINE. buildPiRpcLaunch puts it before --no-extensions and does not repeat a user's own --offline.
New case: text generation spawns Pi with exactly one --offline. No existing case inspected that spawn's arguments.
With main's production files and these tests, 5 fail. Forcing --offline onto every launch fails 2, including the thread launch.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (9 packages) and the tests beside the changes all pass. Server Pi suites (PiReplayFixtures, ProviderRegistry, providerCompatibility): 80/80.
Before and after against the real Pi 1.5.0. The setup is hermetic: fake credentials, network denied, and a local single-use token endpoint with 150 ms latency each way. Each row is 10 runs, stopped 200 ms after the answers:
Discovery argv

hard kill (as on Windows)

With the new text-generation argv, set_model openai/gpt-6-luna succeeds offline, and the prompt's request-path refresh rotates and saves the token.
Offline discovery lists a model that an online thread stored from the catalog, and an offline probe does not stop a later thread's catalog refresh.
Runtime transcript from a real install running this change: Windows 11, Pi 1.5.0, no --offline in the launch arguments, a T3 client connected.
11-02 16:33Z openai access token expires; openai stays unused from here on
11-03 01:06–13:08Z 105 status probes (discoverPiViaRpc), 0 thread turns (older trace files rotated out)
11-03 13:08Z refresh token unchanged; auth.json last written 11-02 15:36Z
11-03 13:09Z pi -p --model openai/gpt-6-luna "Reply with exactly OK" -> OK
11-03 13:09Z refresh token rotated and saved, new expiry 14:06Z, no invalid_grant
Not checked: Linux, and a live "before" run against OpenAI's endpoint, which would burn the login. #30182 has the live failures from before the change.
cc @StiensWout, since you've done much of the recent Pi provider work.
T3 starts `pi --mode rpc` for jobs it stops as soon as they answer:
provider status and per-workspace command discovery, text generation
and thread forks. Every RPC-mode Pi starts a background model-catalog
refresh at launch, and that refresh also renews any expired OAuth
credential. When T3's stop (SIGTERM milliseconds after the last answer,
or taskkill /T /F on Windows) lands after the token request has left Pi
but before the response is saved, the provider has already spent the
single-use refresh token and auth.json keeps the spent one. The next
refresh fails with invalid_grant and the user must log in again. With
ChatGPT sign-in's one-hour tokens, the 5-minute status probe ends the
login after the first idle hour.
buildPiRpcLaunch takes `shortLived`, and those four spawn sites pass
it. A short-lived process runs with --offline, which skips Pi's startup
network work, the catalog refresh included; the request-path token
refresh is unaffected. A user's own --offline is not repeated. Thread
processes keep their launch arguments, so they still refresh the
catalog that discovery then reads from Pi's stored copy.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Short-lived Pi helpers now skip startup network refreshes to prevent lost OAuth token rotations. This also makes model discovery use the stored catalog by default; human review is needed to accept that freshness tradeoff.

its intentionally offline discovery is reported as unknown, not unauthenticated;

or refresh behavior to this probe.
Walkthrough
Short-lived Pi RPC launches now use --offline unless that flag is already present. Discovery, text-generation, and fork launch paths enable this behavior. Long-lived MCP-session launches retain their existing offline settings.
buildPiRpcLaunch accepts shortLived and adds --offline when the option is true and the launch arguments do not already include the flag. Tests cover the added flag and the existing-flag case.
Discovery, text generation, and forks set shortLived. Tests check offline flags for those launches and verify that long-lived MCP sessions omit the flag.
A provider with valid credentials can appear unauthenticated until its model catalog is populated. Correct the status result before merging unless this limitation is explicitly accepted.

The description includes complete Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the failure mode, affected launches, scoped implementation, issue link, compatibility details, test results, runtime validation, and known limitations.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issue #30182 is the only active direct target. Its coding requirement: pass --offline only to short-lived Pi processes that T3 stops after they answer (status and workspace discovery, text generation, forks), and keep the user's launch arguments for thread processes. The diff implements this. buildPiRpcLaunch in packages/provider-pi/src/server/mcpInjection.ts adds a shortLived option that appends --offline unless the launch args already contain it. makePiDiscoveryConnection in status.ts sets shortLived: true (status probe and per-workspace discovery). textGeneration.ts sets shortLived: true. adapter.ts sets shortLived: true on the fork launch. The thread openSession path is unchanged and does not set shortLived, so it gets no --offline. Tests cover discovery (machine and workspace), fork, text generation, and the thread launch carrying no --offline. The issue's workaround (global --offline, which also blocks thread catalog refresh and exports PI_OFFLINE) is avoided. Live Windows and macOS repro results, and Linux behavior, were not verified in this review; they are not coding requirements for this check. Pi version gating (0.80.5) is not coded and is not a requirement in the issue.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files are in packages/provider-pi/src/server. The production changes are seven lines: a shortLived option in buildPiRpcLaunch, one shortLived: true each in status.ts, textGeneration.ts, and the fork launch in adapter.ts. Each change serves the #30182 objective of scoping --offline to short-lived launches. The test changes in adapter.test.ts, driver.test.ts, mcpInjection.test.ts, and textGeneration.test.ts assert those launch arguments and the unchanged thread launch, so they support the objective. The summary reports no changes to contracts, settings, client, MCP, or docs. No unrelated change was found.

Thanks for the detailed repro. Scoping --offline to these short-lived helpers looks right to me, and keeping normal thread launches unchanged preserves catalog refreshes.
I checked the empty-catalog concern on Pi 1.5.0 with a fresh agent directory: offline discovery still returned 44 OpenAI models with either a fake API key or fake expired OAuth credentials, with no fetch attempts. Pi retains built-in models without a cached catalog, so I would want a concrete reproduction before treating that bot finding as a blocker.
No blocking findings from my review. This complements #30025, since fixing shutdown ordering alone does not make Pi await its startup refresh.
@Yash-Singh1 could you merge this once the required checks are green? No blockers from my review.

* fix(web): play completion sounds without delay (pingdotgg#29146)
Completion alerts waited two seconds after the client received a completed thread state. Audio was also fetched and decoded only when an alert needed to play, adding a first-play delay.
Notify immediately when the thread shell reports completion, and preload both sounds when a user gesture unlocks audio. Keep completion deduplication and suppression for existing, archived, and stopped runs.
This intentionally removes the continuation grace for completion alerts. A completed run can now notify before an automatic continuation starts. The sidebar's two-second placement grace and server settlement behavior remain in place.
Validation: `vp run check:changed` passes after merging current main, including 40 affected tests, formatting, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and React compiler checks. Tests cover immediate completion, duplicate suppression across reconnects, preloaded audio reuse, and retrying failed loads on alerts without retrying on every gesture. Audible timing has not been verified in a live client.

* fix(desktop): prepare macOS x64 bytecode under Rosetta (pingdotgg#29484)
* fix(server): keep PR watches active after host failures (pingdotgg#29450)
## Problem
PR watches stopped after eight failed host reads, so a prolonged network outage prevented later CI and review updates from reaching the thread.
## Change
Keep watches active after provider failures reported as `failed`. Read detail and activity concurrently without allowing an activity failure to cancel or hide a permanent detail failure. Repeated known permanent failures still stop the watch and notify the agent; rate limits still pause reads. Non-rate-limited GitHub HTTP 403 responses and GraphQL `FORBIDDEN` responses now use a distinct `forbidden` reason so access refusals are counted instead of retried indefinitely. GraphQL error types survive the client mapping, after the existing requested-reviewer fallback.
The provider's `failed` category also includes unclassified host and decode errors. Those continue retrying at the existing two-minute cadence until the watch ends or is stopped. A fixed outage deadline would recreate the recovery failure for longer outages.
## Scope and approval
This is a focused fix for an obvious bug in existing PR watch recovery, covered by the small bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. The changes cover watcher recovery, a GitHub failure classification needed to preserve permanent-error handling, and their regression tests. The new server-side `forbidden` reason does not change RPC contracts or add settings.
## Verification
`vp run check:changed` passed, including 154 tests across five files. Regression coverage includes a 30-minute outage followed by one CI-success notification, mixed activity/detail failures, resetting a prior failure count, and repeated forbidden reads stopping the watch. Provider tests distinguish HTTP 403 and exclusively permanent GraphQL refusals from retryable HTTP 503 and mixed or untyped GraphQL errors. The mixed-failure and GraphQL classification cases failed before their fixes. Seven focused requested-reviewer fallback/refusal tests also pass.

Problem
T3 stops the
pi --mode rpcprocesses it starts for status and workspace discovery, text generation and forks as soon as they answer: SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after 1 s, ortaskkill /T /Fon Windows. At launch, Pi starts a background catalog refresh that also renews expired OAuth credentials. If the stop lands mid-request, the provider has already spent the single-use refresh token, auth.jsonkeeps the spent one, and the next refresh fails withinvalid_grant. With ChatGPT sign-in, the login dies after the first idle hour while a client is connected (#30182).Change
buildPiRpcLaunch({ …, shortLived }) --mode rpc [--no-session] <user launch args> + --offline # when shortLived, unless the launch args already have it [--no-extensions] [--no-tools]--offlineskips Pi's network work at startup. Token refresh on the request path and model calls are unaffected. Discovery then lists the catalog Pi has stored (models-store.json), which thread processes still refresh.--offlinehas existed since Pi 0.55.1, and T3 needs 0.80.5 or later. No contract, setting or migration change.Scope and approval
Fixes #30182. One problem: Pi processes that T3 stops early start network work at launch.
This is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug: 7 non-test lines in
packages/provider-pi, no new setting or default, and threads launch exactly as before. This PR does not touch
rpc.tsand is independent of #30025.Reverting is safe: the change keeps no state, and the blast radius is limited to the four short-lived Pi launches.
Verification
vp test runinpackages/provider-pi: 155/155 pass.--offline. The thread launch carries none and noPI_OFFLINE.buildPiRpcLaunchputs it before--no-extensionsand does not repeat a user's own--offline.--offline. No existing case inspected that spawn's arguments.--offlineonto every launch fails 2, including the thread launch.vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (9 packages) and the tests beside the changes all pass. Server Pi suites (PiReplayFixtures,ProviderRegistry, providerCompatibility): 80/80.Before and after against the real Pi 1.5.0. The setup is hermetic: fake credentials, network denied, and a local single-use token endpoint with 150 ms latency each way. Each row is 10 runs, stopped 200 ms after the answers:
set_model openai/gpt-6-lunasucceeds offline, and the prompt's request-path refresh rotates and saves the token.Runtime transcript from a real install running this change: Windows 11, Pi 1.5.0, no
--offlinein the launch arguments, a T3 client connected. Not checked: Linux, and a live "before" run against OpenAI's endpoint, which would burn the login. #30182 has the live failures from before the change.
cc @StiensWout, since you've done much of the recent Pi provider work.
