fix(server): keep the live search index when a refresh times out - #23182
maria-rcks merged 2 commits into
Conversation
…scan wait A rescan that runs past the 15 second wait keeps going on the live finder, which still answers from its previous index. Treat that the way index creation already does instead of failing the refresh, so WorkspaceEntries.refresh no longer invalidates a working index after a file write and forces a rebuild that can time out again. ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server bug fix that keeps the existing workspace search index available when a refresh exceeds its wait timeout, while preserving failure handling for actual refresh errors. A targeted regression test covers the affected path. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Refresh timeout behavior and search regression test apps/server/src/workspace/WorkspaceSearchIndex.ts, apps/server/src/workspace/WorkspaceEntries.test.ts |
refresh no longer reports scan timeouts as failures. The scan continues, and the finder serves results from the previous index until scanning finishes. The regression test checks that a search returns an indexed match and that refresh reuses the existing finder. |

The refresh fix is supported, but the regression test should be strengthened because it does not verify search during an active rescan.

The mock returns
falseimmediately, even if the scan of the small temporary directory has finished. The second search can therefore pass without testing whether the finder serves the previous index during an active rescan. Hold the scan in progress through the second search, and assert that it is still scanning before checking the match. The native readiness method checks scan progress rather than returning a fixed timeout result. (github.com)🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

The refresh regression test only checked that the second search matched. It now also checks that one finder was created and rescanned once, so the match comes from the live index after a timed-out refresh wait rather than from a rebuild. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
On a workspace where a rescan takes longer than 15 seconds (a large checkout, a slow disk or a network filesystem), saving a file or finishing an agent turn can break content search. Both paths call
WorkspaceEntries.refresh, which rescans every live index and waits up to 15 seconds per index. When that wait runs out, refreshreportsWorkspaceSearchIndexScanTimedOut, andWorkspaceEntriesinvalidates the index it just asked to refresh. The next content search builds a new index from scratch. That build hits the same 15-second wall, and the dialog shows "Failed to search workspace contents in '…'".The index that was thrown away still worked. fff runs
scanFiles()in the background and keeps answering from the previous index until the new scan finishes. A refresh that outlasts the wait leaves a usable finder behind.Change
WorkspaceSearchIndex.refreshno longer fails when the rescan outlasts the 15-second wait. The rescan keeps running on the live finder, which answers from its previous index until the rescan finishes.refresh()no longer reportsWorkspaceSearchIndexScanTimedOut, and its service type drops that error. This differs from index creation on purpose. #11500 kept the path finder alive after an initial scan timeout, but kept the failure for the content index, because an unfinished first content scan has no complete index to answer from. A refresh has one, since the previous scan stays in place while the rescan runs.
WorkspaceEntries.refreshis unchanged. It still invalidates an entry when acquiring the index fails, including a cached failed build, so a broken index is still cleared. The write still waits up to 15 seconds for each live index to rescan, so up to 30 seconds when the path and content indexes are both live. That wait is a separate problem and is left alone here.
Scope and approval
Fixes the refresh half of #10917. In the triage comment, @juliusmarminge confirmed the bug and noted "
refreshlogs + invalidates onScanTimedOut". #11500 fixed the creation path and closed the issue. The refresh path it named still drops the index on currentmain.Verification
New test in
WorkspaceEntries.test.ts. It uses a real fff finder on a temp workspace and wrapswaitForIndexReadyso that every wait after the first build reports "not ready", as a slow disk would. It runs a content search, callsrefresh, then searches again. No timers.mainthe second search fails withWorkspaceSearchIndexScanTimedOut, because the refresh invalidated the index and the rebuild timed out.Real app, production builds of
mainand this branch on Linux, each on fresh state. The project sits on a loopback FUSE mount that can add 20 ms to each getattr, readdir, open and read, as a stand-in for a slow network filesystem. In a direct fff check on this mount, the content index builds in about half a second with the delay off, and a rescan outlasts 15 seconds with it on. Steps for each build:src/billing/invoice.tsand switch the mount to slow.On
main, the server logs "Failed to refresh workspace search index" withWorkspaceSearchIndexScanTimedOutfor the content index. Step 4 then fails after 16 seconds. On this branch there is no refresh warning, and step 4 returns the match in 6 seconds over the slow mount. Also run:
vp fmt --checkandvp linton both changed files, andtsc-rs --noEmitinapps/server. All pass. Not checked:
RunFinalizationService). It calls the sameWorkspaceEntries.refresh.refresh()path, and the test covers the content index.Prior PRs
#11500 by @Michel-Liao kept the path finder alive when the initial scan times out and closed #10917. This PR covers the refresh path, where the finder keeps answering from its earlier scan while the rescan runs. Thanks to @JoergHansmann for reporting #10917.
Related: #22603 by @mikeohuo (open) removes the refresh after agent runs. It changes different files and does not conflict. File saves still refresh either way.
