Problem

On Hyprland, every SnapShot failed after a T3 Code update with "Could not capture the active window." The update ships a new bundled capture helper, so the copy the user installed earlier no longer matches, setup reports update-required, and capture refuses to run. The real reason ("Update the bundled capture helper to continue.") only reached the desktop trace log, so the user had no hint that Settings → SnapShots had an Update button waiting.

Change

  • captureHyprlandWindow reinstalls a helper the user already installed when it is out of date, using the same atomic install as the Settings Update button, then rechecks setup. A first install still happens only through Settings.
  • Hyprland and KDE capture throw CaptureSetupRequiredError when setup is not ready. DesktopSnapShot maps it to a new setup-required operation, so the toast says "Finish SnapShot setup in Settings → SnapShots." instead of the generic capture failure. A failed automatic update reports the same way, with the install error kept as the cause.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug, which CONTRIBUTING allows without prior approval: an app update breaks a feature until the user finds a button nothing points them to. The automatic step only refreshes a helper the user already chose to install. It does not install one for the first time.

Verification

  • Reproduced on a live Hyprland session. I ran captureHyprlandWindow under Electron 44 against the shipped Nightly's bundled helper, with a stale copy installed in a temporary data home:
    • base: before: update-required → Error: Update the bundled capture helper to continue. Open Settings → SnapShots to continue setup.
    • this branch: before: update-required → capture: teams-for-linux … 125343 bytes → after: ready
  • Tests that fail on base. HyprlandSnapShot.test.ts: a stale helper is updated before capture, and a missing helper is not installed implicitly. DesktopSnapShot.test.ts: a setup failure surfaces as setup-required. All three fail with the source changes reverted.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), and 3 test files (71 tests) pass.
  • Reviewed with sol-loop: 2 rounds with gpt-6.1-sol on high. Sol verdict: approved. Round 1 found that a failed automatic update still fell through to the generic toast; fixed in f9e4463.

Unverified

  • KDE capture with an incomplete setup: covered by the shared error type, not driven on a KDE session.
  • Not checked through the Ctrl+Shift+2 shortcut in a packaged build of this branch. The live drive ran the changed function directly.

Decisions

  • Automatic update only for an already installed helper; runner-up: also install on first capture. A first install puts a new executable on the machine, so it stays behind the explicit Settings step.
  • Hyprland only for the automatic update; runner-up: also the KDE helper. Only the Hyprland path was hit. KDE gets the clearer toast and its update can follow.
  • A fixed toast message for setup-required; runner-up: show the setup state text. DesktopSnapShotError messages come from typed fields throughout this file, and the setup dialog already shows the detailed state.

An app update ships a new bundled helper, so the installed copy no longer
matches and setup reports update-required. Capture refused to run and the
toast showed only "Could not capture the active window."

Capture now reinstalls an outdated helper the user already installed.
Setup states that still need the user throw CaptureSetupRequiredError,
which the toast reports as "Finish SnapShot setup in Settings → SnapShots."

Walkthrough

Linux SnapShot capture now uses a dedicated setup-required error when capture setup is unavailable. Hyprland capture can update an outdated helper and check setup again. DesktopSnapShot maps the error to the setup-required operation. Tests cover helper setup and error classification.

In a narrow race, capture can reinstall a helper removed in Settings. The change is mergeable with awareness; removing the helper again is a workaround.

Explanation

The title names the main change: SnapShots on Hyprland keep working after an app update. The changeset adds an automatic refresh of an outdated Hyprland capture helper and a setup-required error path, which the title covers. The title follows the conventional commit form and is specific, with no vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and it fills each one with specific content. The Problem section gives the reproduction context: Hyprland, an update that ships a new helper, and the update-required state. The Change section lists the Hyprland auto-update and the setup-required mapping. The Scope section argues for the small-fix exemption. The Verification section gives a live reproduction, the failing tests, the check command results, and unverified items. It also names the model and harness, as the template asks. The Scope section relies on an argument for the exemption, not on a linked issue or maintainer approval, so a reviewer may still question it. The Verification section does not include screenshots, but the change has no UI layout change, so this is acceptable.

Assert the helper version when capture starts.

The execFile mock accepts either helper version, and the file assertion runs after capture. The test can therefore pass if capture uses the stale helper and the update happens afterward. Check the installed contents when the mock receives capture. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines, “ask for a missing test only when it would catch a real regression.”

Serialize helper updates with removal.

If removal completes after this state check, perform can reinstall the helper and continue the capture. DesktopSnapShot uses separate mutexes for capture and setup, so they can overlap. Serialize removal with the check and update. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Note

opus-5.5 responding on behalf of Ryan.

[P3] Finding: A helper removal from Settings can race the automatic update inside a capture and leave the helper reinstalled.
Cause: Setup actions run under configurationMutex (DesktopSnapShot.ts:1358) and capture runs under snapshotMutex (DesktopSnapShot.ts:1016), so state() → perform("install-hyprland-helper") in captureHyprlandWindow is not serialized with "Remove helper".
Impact: Only when the user clicks Remove in the few milliseconds between a capture's state check and its reinstall, while the helper is already outdated. The helper comes back and that one capture completes; a second Remove sticks.
Model: coderabbit · confirmed by opus-5.5 (traced both mutexes)
Action: comment-only (rare race; serializing would hold the setup lock for a capture of up to 20s and block Settings, which costs more than the race)

@Rhinomcd Understood. I’ll leave this as a comment-only P3 finding and won’t press for a code change in this PR. The race remains an accepted risk, not a completed fix.

Review summary for f9e4463:

  • Pushed fixes: f9e4463 reports a failed automatic helper update as setup-required instead of the generic capture toast (found by gpt-6.1-sol in pre-PR review).
  • Open P1/P2s: none.
  • Declined: CodeRabbit's removal/update race (P3), with the reason in its thread.
  • Checked out clean: first-time install stays behind Settings (test); a linked helper is still refused by regularFile before any write; KDE and GNOME setup flows are unchanged apart from the error type.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verification result: unverifiable on this VM, not approval of the capture fix.

I read the diff, description, discussion and reviews, installed dependencies with vp i, and ran the real server and web client on both github/main (54c5f25249961a1aa0b61932329092eadbd9d6fc) in a separate worktree and the exact PR head (f9e4463571ffe0ff6e4cff6cb61e3f07d36325e3). I used the repo's Playwright dependency with /usr/bin/google-chrome, paired each client, and opened Settings → SnapShots. Both displayed "Only available in the desktop app." The real browser had no window.desktopBridge.

Main:

main: snapshots unavailable in the web client

PR head:

pr head: snapshots unavailable in the web client

Runtime prerequisite checks:

VM: Ubuntu 24.04; Xorg and openbox running; DISPLAY=:0
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=unset
Hyprland=absent
hyprctl=absent
kwin_wayland=absent
/dev/dri=absent
apt-cache policy hyprland: no candidate in configured repositories
main: serverPort=16733 webPort=8693
PR: serverPort=13773 webPort=5733 (isolated --home-dir)
main and PR: desktopBridge=undefined

The current head has 26 successful CI contexts and no failing or pending contexts. These checks do not prove the desktop behavior. No source changes or pushes were made. Task dev servers were stopped.

Not verified

The original stale-helper failure could not be reproduced through the actual desktop path on main. Automatic Hyprland helper update, successful capture and attachment to a draft, first-install opt-in, failed-update setup toast, helper removal, and KDE setup errors remain unverified. This VM has neither required compositor, and the web client cannot invoke the changed Electron code. I did not simulate a compositor, inject a desktop bridge, or substitute direct function calls for the user path.

No Codex turn or interaction recording was captured: there was no real capture available to send through the provider path. Native macOS, Windows, iOS and Android behavior was not exercised. Completing verification needs an Electron client in a real Hyprland session, plus KDE for its setup-error path.
