Repository navigation
fix(web): horizontal scrolling inside diff and file panes no longer switches threads - #28091
In the desktop app, a two-finger sideways scroll inside the diff or file viewer could show the history arrow and switch threads instead of scrolling the content, even when the content had room to scroll.
Change
The swipe guard looked for a horizontal scroller by walking event.target and its parent elements. The diff and file viewers render inside open shadow roots, and a wheel event from inside a shadow root is retargeted to the shadow host, so the walk never reached the scroller. The guard now walks event.composedPath(), which includes the elements inside the shadow root. The dialog check uses the same path.
At axis lock, the guard combines the starting and current composed paths so remounted scrollers are recognized and a starting dialog remains excluded.
The existing rule stays: if what is under the pointer can still scroll sideways in the swipe's direction, it scrolls. Otherwise the swipe remains eligible for normal history navigation. A panel with no horizontal overflow still navigates, and a fresh swipe at a scroller's edge still navigates. A swipe that starts as a scroll stays a scroll until the fingers lift and momentum ends.
Scope and approval
Submitted under CONTRIBUTING’s small obvious-bug exception: this makes the existing scroll guard work for shadow-root scrollers, without adding a setting or changing the gesture policy. #28048 asks for a global toggle; this PR does not add one. It fixes only the case where content that can scroll sideways loses the swipe to history.

main switches threads on a left swipe from diff offset 400. the fixed head scrolls 400 → 220 and keeps the thread.
right scrolling after history navigation/remount and file scrolling in both directions keep the thread. gestures claimed by scrolling stay claimed through an edge; fresh edge gestures still navigate. back/forward controls and the command palette guard work.
the takeover also handles detached pending paths while retaining the starting dialog guard. both added cases failed before their fixes. all 12 focused tests and vp run check:changed 2359643cffa6ba9ee84d6f2694b935de54a8013e pass through blacksmith. two independent reviewers approved this head.

verification and follow-up fixes: gpt-6.1-sol through the codex harness in t3 code.
…witches threads
The history swipe guard walked event.target and its parents to find a
horizontal scroller. Wheel events from inside a shadow root are retargeted
to the shadow host, so scrollers in the diff and file viewers were missed
and a sideways scroll there could navigate thread history instead.
The guard now walks the event's composed path, which includes elements
inside open shadow roots. Panels without horizontal overflow, and a fresh
swipe at a scroller's edge, still navigate as before.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The swipe guard now recognizes scrollable content inside shadow roots, preventing horizontal scrolling in diff and file panes from switching threads. Existing navigation thresholds and scrolling policy remain unchanged, with reported Chromium regression coverage supporting the fix.

HistorySwipeNavigation now checks wheel events’ composed paths for horizontal scrollers and dialogs. Browser tests cover light-DOM and shadow-root scrollers, scroller replacement, and cases where a swipe does or does not trigger history navigation.

A narrow swipe-at-the-edge case can navigate history instead of continuing horizontal scrolling; this is localized but should be addressed.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections are clear. Scope cites the small obvious-bug exception and explains why no prior issue is needed, and it states that the discussion #28048 global toggle is not added. Verification is detailed. It lists the commits, the platform, the focused test results (12 tests and check:changed passing), before/after screenshots, a native gesture recording, and items not verified. The template asks for the model and harness at the end, and the description includes a line for that: 'verification and follow-up fixes: gpt-6.1-sol through the codex harness in t3 code.' The template's title guidance (conventional commit title) cannot be checked from the provided context. The description also has one main gap: the Scope section relies on an exception claim that a reviewer must judge. It does explain the reasoning, though, so the section is not missing.

Record horizontal scrolling during the pending phase.

Record horizontal scrolling during the pending phase.
The swipe guard reads scrollLeft only when the axis locks. Wheel events before the lock can still scroll the element under the pointer, because the wheel listener is passive: true and does not cancel the default action. If those events move a scroller to its edge, canScrollHorizontally at lock time finds no remaining range. The gesture can then navigate history during the same swipe. This needs a scroller that starts within the pre-lock movement of its edge, so the impact is narrow.
Check the scroll range on each pending event, before its scroll applies, and keep the result until the axis locks:

Update the pending gesture state and wheel-event handling in
HistorySwipeNavigation so each pending event checks whether its horizontal delta
can scroll the element under the pointer before the default scroll applies,
recording that result until axis lock. When the gesture locks, treat any
recorded scrollable movement as ignored, even if the scroller has since reached
its edge; preserve the existing lock-time check for other cases.
