Problem

Claude Code installed with Chocolatey on Windows resolves to C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin\claude.exe. T3 Code compared that install with the npm registry, which runs ahead of Chocolatey, and offered Update now. That runs claude update through the shim, which installs a native copy under ~/.local and leaves the Chocolatey copy unchanged, so every update is reported as failed.

Change

On Windows, a Claude executable under chocolatey\bin, lib\claude-code\tools, or <ChocolateyInstall>\bin is treated as Chocolatey-owned. Those installs stay manual-only: C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\lib is writable only by Administrators and the server is unelevated, so T3 Code does not run choco upgrade. The latest version comes from choco search claude-code --exact --limit-output. When that probe is missing or fails, latestVersion stays null and npm is not consulted. The card shows choco upgrade claude-code through the existing updateCommand copy row. canUpdate stays false, so the Update now button stays hidden. Mobile does not read updateCommand and still says "Update this provider on the environment's machine." The check is Claude-only, the same shape as #19517, and can be widened per provider. WinGet keeps its current behavior.

Scope and approval

Closes #22810. This is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug: the updater acts on a different install than the one it probed, and the version check asks a channel that does not own the files. It follows the manual-only pattern from #19517.

Verification

  • packages/provider-core: pnpm exec vp test run src/server/maintenanceResolver.test.ts — 42 passed, 17 skipped (existing platform skips). pnpm exec vp run typecheck passed.
  • Repo root: pnpm exec vp lint on the changed files passed, pnpm exec vp fmt --check on those files passed, and pnpm exec vp run knip:check passed.
  • apps/web: pnpm exec vp test run src/components/ProviderUpdateLaunchNotification.logic.test.ts src/components/settings/providerStatus.test.ts — 22 passed.

On upstream main (680152e27) the new Chocolatey tests fail. A Chocolatey path still resolves to the native updater, the catalog lookup consults npm instead of choco search, a failed search is not isolated from npm, the advisory does not surface choco upgrade claude-code, and parseChocolateyLatestVersion does not exist. The off-Windows Chocolatey-shaped path still uses the native updater, on main and on this branch.

Captured on a second Windows machine where claude resolves to C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin\claude.exe at 2.1.304, choco search reports 2.1.304, and npm reports 2.1.306. Full write-up: #22810 (comment)

Before, upstream main at 680152e27 offers Update now against the npm version. Clicking it runs claude update through the shim, leaves the Chocolatey install at 2.1.304, and reports that the provider is still outdated.

Before: Update available with Update now

Before: Update now finished and the provider is still outdated

After, d4ad4f47b compares against Chocolatey. That channel is current, so the card shows no update warning and no Update now button.

After: no update advisory

The copyable choco upgrade claude-code row appears only when Chocolatey itself is behind. It was not on screen here, because choco search already matched the installed version. The resolver tests cover that row.

Model: Auto. Harness: Cursor in T3 Code.

…ompare against choco

Claude Code installed with Chocolatey was compared against npm, and Update now ran claude update through the shim. That installs a native copy and leaves the Chocolatey install unchanged. Treat those installs as manual-only, compare them with choco search, and show choco upgrade claude-code without running it.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active direct issue #22810 requires Chocolatey ownership detection for Windows Claude installs, Chocolatey version lookup, no native updater action, and a copyable manual command. The resolver adds Windows-only Claude path detection for chocolatey\bin, lib\claude-code\tools, and ChocolateyInstall, uses choco search claude-code --exact --limit-output, returns null on probe failure, and does not use npm for that lookup. It returns manual-only capabilities with choco upgrade claude-code, so canUpdate remains false. The advisory and resolver tests cover these behaviors and preserve off-Windows behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support #22810. They add the manual command capability, Chocolatey resolver logic, advisory output, focused tests, and related documentation. The Chocolatey branch is limited to Claude on Windows. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

…colatey root

A path ending in lib\claude-code\tools\claude.exe was enough to hide the native updater and show choco upgrade. Require the default chocolatey directory or ChocolateyInstall.

thanks @robrab2000. the original fix correctly keeps chocolatey claude manual-only, compares against its owning channel, and avoids npm fallback when choco fails. i kept both original commits and merged current main without rebasing.

i shortened the implementation comments and extended the existing resolver tests to check custom-root casing/trailing separators, native-looking aliases, the exact choco search claude-code --exact --limit-output arguments, and a current chocolatey release producing a current advisory with no executable update action. no installer behavior or original scope was dropped.

verification on 89f433b5931e2c59397f7be1d4d305055d3fadac:

  • current main (071239804e375078dd3fae3b14704b4def57e048) failed eight original chocolatey regression cases, including native-updater selection and npm lookup.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, both knip passes, typechecks for 21 affected packages, and all 64 resolver tests.
  • blacksmith web update-notification and provider-status suites passed all 16 tests.
  • two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews approved this exact head with no findings.

unverified: actual windows/chocolatey execution and before/after client captures of this head. this vm runs linux; browser startup worked, but its real provider path cannot exercise the windows-only branch. the screenshots already in the description remain historical contributor evidence. no provider installation was updated. the temporary dev server and blacksmith worker were stopped.

Thanks @maria-rcks. Ran the resolver suite on this Windows 11 machine at 89f433b to cover the gap you noted:

packages/provider-core> vp test run src/server/maintenanceResolver.test.ts
Tests 47 passed | 17 skipped (64)

All Chocolatey cases pass on Windows, including the new custom-root casing, native-looking alias, and current-release advisory tests. The 17 skipped are the pre-existing POSIX-only cases (pnpm, bun, brew, mise, Volta, Yarn).

The before/after captures in the description were taken on a Chocolatey-installed Claude on a second Windows machine against the original head; the Windows-only branch is unchanged by the merge and test commit.

Verified in a real dev environment

none of the changed behavior could be exercised on this linux vm. this is an unverifiable result, not a passing runtime verification.

i inspected the description, discussion, full implementation diff, commit authors, and exact head 89f433b5931e2c59397f7be1d4d305055d3fadac. github reports the pr open and unmerged, with no pr commits by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. the git.cafe number is also 22941.

environment probe:

node: {"platform":"linux","arch":"x64"}
resolver guard: definition.provider === "claudeAgent" && context.platform === "win32"

Not verified

actual windows chocolatey ownership detection, choco search claude-code --exact --limit-output, comparison against chocolatey rather than npm, failure without npm fallback, the manual choco upgrade claude-code copy row, and absence of an executable update action remain unverified by me this turn. native claude and winget neighboring behavior also remain unverified.

reproducing on main and verifying this head requires a real windows environment with chocolatey-installed claude. i did not start main or pr dev servers, create projects or provider turns, or capture client media: a linux codex turn cannot exercise this claude/windows-only branch, and platform spoofing or fake chocolatey commands would violate this verification brief. no code, branches, labels, or provider installations were changed.

the contributor reports windows resolver tests and historical before/after captures in the discussion. those are useful context, but are not runtime evidence i reproduced on this head. the six successful git.cafe check contexts likewise do not establish real-app behavior.

merged main 97e35bcf23e4 into the existing head without rebasing or force-pushing. head: 0baad4e2d2c384f47aec4dd71d3b15486884b74c. the docs conflict preserves the chocolatey guidance and main's renamed runner link. scope remains five files, +245/-10; no implementation changes were added.

blacksmith verification passed:

  • vp run check:changed github/main: format, lint, both knip passes, 25 affected-package typechecks, and 65 tests.
  • existing maintenance runner, provider status, and update notification suites: 34 tests passed.
  • two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews approved this exact head with no findings. the existing bot ownership finding remains addressed, and its github thread is resolved.

github reports no conflicts. ci is running on the new head. actual windows/chocolatey execution and client interaction on this head remain unverified on this linux vm; the contributor's historical windows evidence remains in the description. no provider installation was changed.

Verified in a real dev environment

result: unverifiable for the changed windows/chocolatey behavior. these are real linux neighboring checks, not proof of that fix.

i inspected the description, discussion, full diff and commit authors. the pr is open, with no pr commits by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. git.cafe also numbers it 22941. exact head: 0baad4e2d2c384f47aec4dd71d3b15486884b74c.

  • installed github/main (028ed851d552eda86d8c28a758de3d8157b80d56) in a separate worktree with vp i, then ran its background dev server on web/server ports 8693/16733 with empty isolated state. stopped its captured process-group pid before starting the pr.
  • checked out the exact pr head, ran vp i, and started its background dev server on web/server ports 5733/13773 with separate empty state.
  • drove both web clients with repo playwright 1.60.0 and /usr/bin/google-chrome. added a project pointing at a real git repository through the app, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted matching prompts. both real provider turns ran git status --short with exit code 0 and returned provider verification ok. persisted run, command and reply results are in the transcript.
  • both provider settings pages show codex 0.164.0 against latest 0.166.0, manual guidance for /home/user/.local/bin/codex, and no Update now button. on the pr, refreshing provider status and selecting claude also work. claude 2.1.314 is detected and reports unauthenticated. no installer update was run.

client finding on both revisions: the initial live view omitted assistant output after completion. reloading the pr client displayed the persisted reply and command. this baseline finding is outside the chocolatey scope; live streaming is not a passing check.

the screenshots show matching linux codex data, not the windows bug or fix. the recording shows the completed real turn, settings navigation, status refresh and claude selection. captures were inspected; the mp4 plays and seeks in t3's browser; its gif export below renders inline on github.

main: linux codex manual-update advisory

pr: matching linux codex manual-update advisory

pr: real codex gpt-6.1-sol command and reply after reload

pr: neighboring provider settings interactions

short runtime transcript

this host is linux x64 with no chocolatey executable. the changed resolver branch requires context.platform === "win32" and a real chocolatey-owned claude executable. i could not reproduce the original bug on main or exercise the fix here. platform spoofing or fake installer commands would not establish real-app behavior.

still unverified: chocolatey ownership detection; comparison against choco search rather than npm; missing/failed choco without npm fallback; the manual choco upgrade claude-code copy row; absence of executable update actions for that install; windows native claude and winget neighbors; macos, electron shell and native ios/android. these require the respective real environments. contributor screenshots and windows test reports remain historical evidence, not checks i reproduced.

existing github ci is green on this head, with non-applicable jobs skipped. no code or test files changed, no new check run was started, and nothing was pushed. linux runtime checks do not remove the windows verification gap.

merged main into the existing branch in 39c37bb701, resolving the version-cache conflict while preserving chocolatey's per-install cache and main's configured npm registry fallback. chocolatey updates remain manual-only; no scope expansion.

blacksmith verification passed: vp run check:changed github/main (format, lint, knip, 25 affected-package typechecks, 77 tests), plus all 76 resolver tests separately. two independent code reviews found no blocking findings. the earlier ownership finding is already fixed and its github thread is resolved.

windows chocolatey runtime verification remains unverified on this linux vm. existing windows evidence remains in the pr body. waiting for ci on this head; no merge performed.
