fix(server): report Claude settings compaction threshold - #29220
Claude's context meter can miss the auto-compaction threshold when autoCompactWindow is set in Claude's own settings. A 500,000-token window therefore looks like it has the full model window available even though Claude compacts at about 467,000 tokens.
T3 now reads Claude's settings for the active turn when its own provider override is empty, respecting settings-file and launch-settings precedence. The threshold follows the settings directory and launch settings of the live Claude process when a query is reused. The existing model-window ceiling stays unchanged. This is a focused fix for the incorrect threshold reported in #29173; #27810 also addresses this settings lookup alongside a broader meter change.
Verification:
The adapter regression cases failed on the original code (no threshold for a 500,000-token user setting), then passed with the fix. They cover the T3 override, project and launch settings, model-specific settings, invalid types, and usage after compaction. The out-of-range cases also passed in upstream CI.
vp run check:changed passed on the updated branch: 299 tests, lint, format, knip, and typecheck. A two-turn test failed before the query-reuse fix (117,000 then 147,000) and passed after it (117,000 for both).
In an isolated Linux dev server, a real Claude Haiku turn with autoCompactWindow: 150000 in its Claude home settings completed and persisted autoCompactThreshold: 117000 with maxTokens: 1000000.
The threshold does not yet account for Claude's environment overrides, --autocompact, managed policy settings, or canonicalized per-model aliases. No frontend code changed.
Reviewed with review-loop: 1 round with Claude Opus 5.5. Reviewer verdict: approved. The invalid-value boundary and query-reuse fixes, with regression cases, followed the review.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The adapter now reports compaction thresholds from existing Claude settings, including model-specific overrides. This affects usage reporting rather than compaction behavior or product defaults.
Needs human approval because:

Walkthrough
ClaudeAdapterV2 resolves an auto-compaction window for each turn from adapter settings, launch arguments, and settings files. It stores the resolved value in turn context and uses it for context-usage reporting. Tests cover setting precedence, model-specific values, invalid settings, and project-specific values.

Summary
Decode and resolve settings apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts
Settings decoding accepts compact-window values. Resolution checks a nonempty adapter setting, then launch settings and settings files in precedence order. It supports model-specific lookup and accepts integer windows from 100,000 through 1,000,000. The shared settings-file ordering is also used for tool-search overrides.
Apply and verify the window apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
The adapter stores the resolved window in active-turn context and uses it for context-usage events. Tests cover settings sources, precedence, invalid values, and reused queries with different working directories.
pingdotgg/t3code#29173: The change reads autoCompactWindow from settings files and uses the resolved value for threshold reporting, matching the reported behavior.
pingdotgg/t3code#26631: The change uses launch-argument settings for resolution but does not change the reported ~ path expansion behavior.

Explanation
The title names the server-side change: Claude settings compaction threshold reporting. The raw summary shows the adapter now reads autoCompactWindow from Claude settings files and launch args to compute the per-turn auto-compact threshold, so the title matches the main change. It follows the conventional commit format from the template and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Explanation
The description covers the problem, the change, the verification steps, and the stated limitations, so it is substantially complete. Gaps against the template: the 'Scope and approval' section is missing. It does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer-approved discussion. It refers to #29173 as the reported issue, but it does not say whether a maintainer triaged that issue or approved the direction. It also does not explain why the fix qualifies without prior approval, which the template asks for when no approval link exists. The Verification section gives concrete results, and the template's note that 'Tests pass' alone is insufficient is satisfied. The model attribution line is present.
Resolution
Add a 'Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged bug issue #29173 and show maintainer approval of the direction and scope, with the approval comment. If no maintainer approval exists, explain why this focused configuration fix qualifies without a prior issue or discussion. Describe what the existing auto-compaction capability already does and what the settings lookup controls.

Parse Claude settings files as strict JSON.
fromLenientJson accepts comments and trailing commas. Claude Code rejects a settings file with either syntax error. If that file sets autoCompactWindow, resolveAutoCompactWindow can report its threshold even though Claude ignores the file. Use a strict JSON decoder for the settings-file read; keep any intended launch-argument parsing separate. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the settings-file read that uses fromLenientJson to use a strict JSON
decoder, so comments and trailing commas make the file invalid and cannot
produce an autoCompactWindow threshold in resolveAutoCompactWindow. Keep any
intended lenient parsing of launch arguments separate and unchanged.

merged current main without rebasing, preserving its post-compaction usage handling and this pr's query-reuse settings lookup. settings files now use strict json. the lookup also matches claude's handling of top-level "auto" and malformed modelSettings; four regression rows failed before the corresponding fixes. added the missing crypto layer to the existing query-reuse test after the merge.

on github/main (3368dd70f2), a real claude sonnet 4.6 turn with project .claude/settings.json containing {"autoCompactWindow":150000} completed, but persisted no autoCompactThreshold. the context tooltip omitted the threshold.
on this pr, the same project, setting, model and prompt persisted autoCompactThreshold: 117000 with maxTokens: 200000. the client tooltip displayed "compacts automatically at about 117,000 tokens."
a follow-up turn in the same claude thread completed and retained 117,000.
setting the t3 provider override to 180,000 produced 147,000 in a new session, taking precedence over the project setting. the existing session retained its original 117,000.
real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns completed on both main and the pr head.
blacksmith ran the existing compaction and reused-query regression cases: 19 passed. the head also has 29 successful ci checks. no source changes or pushes were needed.
short runtime transcript, read from each running app's persisted provider-turn projection:
native desktop, ios and android clients; remote relay and tunnel connections; actually filling the context to trigger compaction; every settings-file and launch-argument precedence combination through a live provider. the focused regression cases cover those settings variants in isolation. this verifies threshold reporting and nearby live behavior, not a full compaction cycle.
claude haiku 4.5's undated model id was rejected by this proxy, so the app checks used claude sonnet 4.6. the dated haiku id worked in a separate direct cli connectivity check.
