Problem

Every pull request and merge request composer is a plain textarea, on web and mobile. Typing @ suggests nobody, so you have to remember the exact login of whoever you want to tag. Proposed in discussion #26914.

Change

@ followed by an optional partial login, typed after whitespace or at the start of a line, opens a list of the repository's users under the textarea. Arrow keys move through the list. Enter or Tab inserts @login , and so do a click or a tap. Escape closes the list and leaves the composer open.

  • There's no new RPC. The list calls pullRequests.filterOptions({ kind: "authors", projectId, query }), which already searches one repository. That's mentionableUsers on GitHub, project users on GitLab, and the same on Forgejo and GitCafe.
  • Under 3 characters the client sends no search and filters the full list itself. GitLab's projects/:id/users?search= returns nothing for shorter queries, so before this change @To found nobody.
  • packages/shared/src/pullRequestComposerTrigger.ts holds the detection, the insertion and the short-query rule. Web and mobile both use it.
  • Web: PullRequestMarkdownTextarea replaces the textarea in the comment form, the review summary, the thread reply, PullRequestMarkdownEditor (description and comment edits), and the inline line comment draft in the Code and Guide tabs. Its list is a non-modal popover, so focus stays in the textarea. Chat diff comments and file preview comments pass no scope and keep the plain textarea.
  • Mobile: usePullRequestMentions and a suggestion list above the input in the review sheet, discussion reply, inline comment and edit screens. The title field is left out.

Scope and approval

Proposed in discussion #26914. No maintainer has approved it yet. I posted the implementation there for review.

Verification

  • vp test run packages/shared/src/pullRequestComposerTrigger.test.ts: 15 passed. These cover detection (emails, code spans, a caret mid-word), insertion, and the 3-character rule, which failed before the fix.
  • PullRequestMarkdownEditor.browser.test.tsx: 2 passed. Typing @ju then Enter inserts @julius . Escape closes the list without cancelling the edit.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (40 packages), tests and the React compiler all pass.
  • Manual, web, against a dev server:
    • git-ansible !5 on GitLab: overview comment, review summary, inline draft and description edit. @T, @To, @Ton and @16 each list the matching member. I posted a comment through the list.
    • yMusic #107 on GitHub: overview comment, with a comment posted the same way.
  • Mobile was not run on a device. Mobile typecheck passes.

Maintainer follow-up

  • Adapters now declare capabilities.mentions. GitHub, GitLab, Forgejo and GitCafe set it; Bitbucket and Azure DevOps don't. Web and mobile composers open @ only when the pull request's host sets it, so those hosts no longer show a list that can never fill. Old servers don't send it, so their clients show no list.
  • The 3-character minimum moved out of the shared client helper into the GitLab CLI (projects/:id/users drops search= below 3 characters). Clients now always send what is typed, so @th searches GitHub instead of filtering the first 50 users.
  • The mobile hook reads the query through useEnvironmentQuery instead of an Atom.family keyed by JSON.

Typing @ in a pull request or merge request composer, on web and mobile,
lists the repository's users from pullRequests.filterOptions and inserts
@login. Queries under three characters filter the unsearched list
locally, since GitLab's project users search returns nothing for them.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds repository-user mention suggestions to web and mobile PR composers without changing submission behavior. The reported caret/keyboard issue remains subject to the separate Medium-severity blocking gate.

Needs human approval because:

…whitespace

Also mocks useDebouncedValue in DiffPanel.browser.test.tsx, which now
renders the mention textarea through DiffCommentAnnotation.

Set aria-controls only when the listbox is rendered.

When no users match, the popup shows status text instead of the listbox, but aria-controls still references the listbox ID. That unresolved reference prevents assistive technology from following the combobox’s control relationship.

Verified in a real dev environment

reproduced on github/main (8b44f42b14) in a separate worktree: the same comment draft opened no mention suggestions. then ran the exact pr head with vp i and one background dev server, using task-only state and projects created through the app.

playwright drove /usr/bin/google-chrome against the real web client and server, with live github and gitcafe author lookups. verified arrow navigation, enter, tab, mouse selection, retained textarea focus, and escape preserving the composer. also exercised review summaries, description editing with markdown preview and cancellation, and inline diff drafts. email addresses did not open suggestions.

found and fixed a caret bug in 6853658eae: completing a mention immediately before a newline moved subsequent typing onto the next line. the shared insertion helper now inserts a space before line breaks. reproduced the failure in the app, added failing-first lf/crlf cases to the existing test, and rechecked the corrected interaction in the app.

main: real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn completed, reading package.json
fixed head: real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn completed, reading package.json
both returned repository name and web dev command
blacksmith: 19 focused tests passed; vp run check:changed passed

matching before and after captures, followed by the github interaction recording:

main: same draft without suggestions

fixed head: same draft with a live gitcafe suggestion

github selection, corrected newline caret, escape, and review completion

Not verified

native ios/android and electron shells were not run on this linux vm. gitlab and forgejo were not exercised with authenticated host access. guide comments, existing conversation replies, and remote review/description submission were not exercised. mention-bearing comments were not posted, to avoid notifications.

short-query coverage is limited to the host's initial user list. on gitcafe, a two-character query did not find a non-collaborator that appeared after a third character triggered host search. this pass does not establish complete short-query coverage for large repositories.

Reset mention dismissal when the user edits the mention query.

After Escape, typing more characters in the same @ token keeps dismissedAt because the token remains valid. The query changes, but the list stays closed while the token has the same rangeStart. The user must leave that token before suggestions can reopen.

Addressed both CodeRabbit outside-diff findings in f0c84a5:

  • aria-controls now points at the listbox only while it renders, not while the popup shows the empty or loading text.
  • After Escape, the next keystroke reopens the list, as GitHub does. Before this, the list stayed dismissed for the rest of the token. The browser test now types after Escape and expects the list again.
