Problem

With OpenCode 1.x, pressing Stop while a tool is running makes OpenCode rewrite that tool part as status: "error", error: "Tool execution aborted", metadata.interrupted: true. OpenCode's own UI treats this as cancelled. T3's v1 OpenCode adapter mapped every tool error to failed. So every command, edit, or task subagent that was running when the user stopped the turn showed as failed. Stopped edits also showed "Tool execution aborted" as their diff, because the failed path uses the error output as the diff.

Change

toolStatus in the v1 adapter now returns interrupted for these parts. It uses the same check as OpenCode's UI: metadata.interrupted === true or the abort message. This matches the v2 adapter, which already maps session.tool.failed with error.type === "aborted" to interrupted, and matches Codex. The task subagent status now takes status.item directly. The old ternary collapsed every unlisted status to running, so a stopped task would have shown as still running.

Scope and approval

Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so no prior issue: one status mapping in one adapter now matches its v2 sibling and OpenCode's own semantics. Overlap search: the local PR index and four gh search queries (opencode aborted/interrupted/stop tool, "Tool execution aborted") found nothing related. The closest are #22938 (cancelled todos) and #21979 (failed background subagents), which touch different code paths.

Verification

  • Red on main: I extended preserves tool lifecycle, approval kinds, and late assistant text without cached tool payloads with an aborted bash part. It failed with received "failed" where "interrupted" was expected.
  • Green: vp test run src/server/adapter.test.ts: 43 passed.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (10 packages), tests (2 files, 44 passed) all pass.
  • I confirmed the abort payload from the OpenCode 1.18.21 binary. I did not run a live OpenCode turn.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 9450ae0

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Stopped OpenCode tools and subagents now report as interrupted rather than failed. This is a narrow status-reporting correction using an existing terminal state, without changing tool execution or permissions.

Walkthrough

The OpenCode adapter classifies specified errored tools as interrupted and preserves tool-item status for subagents. Lifecycle tests cover interrupted commands and cancelled or failed task events.

Explanation

The title "fix(opencode): tools stopped mid-run show as interrupted, not failed" names the main change. The adapter now maps stopped OpenCode tool parts to interrupted instead of failed, and the title states that directly. It follows the conventional commit format the template recommends.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives the expected and observed behavior. The Change section explains the status mapping and the task subagent fix. The Scope section explains why no prior issue exists and lists overlap searches. The Verification section reports a red-then-green test run, the check command results, and what was not checked. The description does not include the template's trailing model and harness note in the expected form, but it does name the tool used. The section is complete enough for a pass.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified on Linux with repo Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, real dev servers, and real provider turns. Created the git project and threads through the web app. Main and PR servers ran sequentially with isolated state.

  • Reproduced on github/main (61c3794c32) and the original PR head (9eaff78e6b): start a native OpenCode task running sleep 120, then click Stop generation. The task card incorrectly says Failed.
  • OpenCode 1.18.21 actually emits status: "error", error: "Task cancelled" for this task, without metadata.interrupted. The original fix missed that payload. Added its tool-specific mapping in 0eab160fa5, pushed to this PR branch.
  • Restarted the dev server and repeated the same interaction with OpenCode cliproxyapi/gpt-6.1-sol: the task card says Stopped, and the persisted task status is interrupted. The recording preserves the original failed turn above the fixed turn.
  • Nearby behavior: a real missing-file read remains failed; the next bash command completes and prints nearby-success. A follow-up turn works after stopping. Codex gpt-6.1-sol also completes pwd and prints provider-path-ok through the web client on both main and the fixed PR.
  • Extended the existing lifecycle test. It failed before the additional mapping and passes afterward. Remote Blacksmith vp run check:changed 5b9731cedc06f310c394f48e66d50a614397c0aa passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks (10 packages), and 44 tests. The explicit base supplies history missing from the runner snapshot.

Before on main:

main shows a stopped native task as failed

After the additional fix, with the same task prompt:

original failed task above the fixed stopped task

clicking stop changes the running task to stopped

Runtime command transcript. Images inspected at full size; uploaded video playback and seeking checked.

Not verified

Native desktop and iOS/Android clients, remote relay/tunnel connections, and OpenCode v2 were not exercised on this Linux web verification. A stopped file edit was not reproduced. The exact Tool execution aborted payload is covered by the existing adapter test; live bash cancellation in OpenCode 1.18.21 and 1.19.5 instead emitted a completed part with User aborted the command, and main already showed that command as interrupted. GitHub CI passes on the pushed head, including build/typecheck, lint, web tests, all eight server shards, and the main test job. Two independent Sol reviewers approved this exact head. External review-bot checks remain pending.

Merged main (69744ad) to resolve a test conflict. #29824 added a vp test command that exits 1 to the same tool-lifecycle test this PR extends with a stopped sleep 60 and the two task subagents. The merged test feeds both, and it now expects the commands pwd ×4, sleep 60 (interrupted), then vp test (failed, exit code 1). #29824's exit-code and node-status checks now point at commands[5], and the subagent assertions are unchanged. All 43 tests in adapter.test.ts pass. No source changes.

Test the abort-message fallback independently.

The sleep 60 fixture sets both metadata.interrupted and "Tool execution aborted". The test still passes if the message fallback is removed. OpenCode 1.3.15 emits that message without setting the metadata flag. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a case without the flag and expect interrupted. As per path instructions, test “the logic a bug fix changes.”

On the review nitpick about testing the abort-message fallback on its own: done in 9450ae0. The stopped-tool fixture is now two cases. sleep 60 has metadata.interrupted and a different message, and sleep 90 has only "Tool execution aborted", which is how OpenCode 1.3.15's processor reports a stop. An independent review removed each of the three interrupt checks in turn (flag, abort message, task cancellation), and each removal failed the test. All 43 tests pass.
