fix(mobile): use preferred languages for on-device iPhone dictation - #31800
With Korean, German, or Brazilian Portuguese first in Settings → General → Language & Region, T3 could still transcribe composer dictation as English. It was choosing the app’s language instead of the iPhone’s preferred language.
Change
On-device iPhone dictation tries the phone’s preferred languages in order, then the app language. Only an unsupported language advances to the next one. Cancelling or failing to download the first model ends the attempt; neither silently switches languages or sends audio elsewhere.
Scope and approval
This is the iPhone fix for #12743, triaged and labeled accepted and bug. It changes only on-device language selection, its tests, and the composer guide. Credit to @nichtlegacy for #13312 and @t3dotgg, who carried the fix in #25808.
Verification
Ran vp test run apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts on e2c1aba: 7/7 passed. Korean was tried before English; an unsupported first choice advanced to the next preferred language; the app language was tried last. Cancellation and a failed model download did not switch languages. These tests mock Apple’s native recognizer.
This rebuilt head hasn’t been tested on a physical iPhone. Contributors verified German and Brazilian Portuguese on the source branches. To check this head, leave dictation on This device, put either language first and English second, and dictate a sentence with the composer microphone.
T3 Code ships in English only, so the app locale an iPhone reports is
"en" for most users even when they speak Korean, German or Hindi, and
dictation prepared Apple's speech model for the wrong language.
The iOS adapter now tries the user's ordered preferred languages from
Settings › General › Language & Region, then the app locale, and keeps
the first one whose model Apple prepares. Only Apple's unsupported-locale
error advances to the next language; cancellation and download failures
surface as before. Device availability stays one hardware and OS check.

The iOS transcriber now tries the user’s preferred languages in order, followed by the app locale. Preparation continues only when a locale is unsupported. Tests and documentation cover the updated behavior.
Changes: iOS Dictation Locale Selection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Collect and pass preferred locales apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.ts
The transcriber reads Apple’s preferred languages, appends the app locale, removes duplicates, and passes the ordered list to preparation. Availability checks use the first locale.
Try locales in order apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts, docs/user/composer.md
Preparation tries each locale and continues only after an unsupported-locale error. Tests cover locale ordering, fallback, and stopping on cancellation or other errors. The documentation describes iPhone language selection.
Preferred-language fallback remains reachable, and no merge-blocking issue is established. Normal checks can proceed.

Restore the Android sentence break.
The new iPhone text now sits before the Android sentence. The Android sentence follows directly after the iPhone fallback sentence. It reads as a separate platform without a label. This is acceptable, but a short subject such as "On iPhone" at the start would match "On Android" at Line 206.

Updated the description with the accepted bug and the results from this PR head (7/7 iOS adapter tests). I left the guide wording as-is: “iPhone dictates” and “Android transcribes” already introduce separate, platform-specific sentences.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — iPhone dictation now automatically uses the first supported system-preferred language before falling back to the app locale. This changes the existing language-selection default and requires confirmation of the intended user experience.
