fix(mobile): transcribe Android audio during recording - #31300
Android dictation records the whole clip, then spends another recording-length interval feeding it to ML Kit. A one-minute recording therefore adds roughly another minute after Stop.
The pacing is required: the original transcription PR found that unpaced and whole-file alternatives silently lost speech. This change retains paced STREAMING inference and moves it into recording.
Change
Feed 16 kHz PCM from Android AudioRecord to ML Kit while recording. Stop releases the microphone and drains the queued tail before accepting the final transcript. Complete-input, exact-byte, and SDK completion checks remain.
The shared voice controller starts inference during capture when the native adapter supports it. Cancel waits for native cleanup before deleting audio or allowing another session. Android reuses Expo's microphone priority and route selection; older native clients retain the file-based path.
Scope and approval
Requested by Alex (PixPMusic) to reduce Android dictation latency while preserving the correctness established in #26734. This is one Android dictation change. iOS, web, and desktop keep their existing transcription path. No server, provider, contract, or connection behavior changes.
Verification
Focused TypeScript tests passed across the shared controller, Android bridge, voice session, and recorder adapter. The new controller cases failed before the change.
Native tests passed, covering replay, live capture, transcript assembly, and conversion. Live cases exercise queued tails, Stop before recognition starts, early SDK completion, unread input, cancellation, and the recording limit.
vp run check:changed passed, including affected-package typechecks. Android native build and install passed.
In the native Android app with real ML Kit, a paced 62.3-second PCM speech fixture produced the complete editable paragraph about 2.7 seconds after Stop, including automation overhead. Opening/middle/end markers and both occurrences of “Red Apple” survived. Cancel preserved the existing draft; an immediate retry succeeded.
Runtime evidence uses a temporary adapter at the PCM capture boundary because the Android 17 emulator intermittently forwards silence from the host microphone. An independent AudioRecord control reproduced that behavior while direct host Loopback capture contained continuous speech. The fixture adapter is absent from this PR; the production APK was restored afterward. A maintainer-provided Pixel 10 Pro Fold comparison also verifies the physical built-in microphone: a roughly 32-second recording becomes editable about one second after Stop, including a pause and rapid final words. Main before · PR after · Physical verification notes. These excerpts are cropped, silent, and preserve the original timing; the original recording stays private. USB/Bluetooth microphone acceptance remains unverified. Test services and the emulator have been stopped.

Walkthrough
Android voice input now captures and transcribes audio while recording. The mobile controller uses the live transcript when recording stops and retains the existing transcription path when live transcription is unavailable.

Live capture writes PCM to a file and streams it to recognition. Capture checks byte delivery and handles stopping, cancellation, and capture failures. Tests cover live capture, draining, incomplete audio, duration limits, and cleanup.
Android recorder and module apps/mobile/modules/t3-voice-transcription/android/src/main/java/expo/modules/t3voicetranscription/LiveVoiceRecorder.kt, apps/mobile/modules/t3-voice-transcription/android/src/main/java/expo/modules/t3voicetranscription/T3VoiceTranscriptionModule.kt, patches/expo-audio@58.0.9.patch, apps/mobile/modules/t3-voice-transcription/android/src/test/java/expo/modules/t3voicetranscription/LiveVoiceRecorderTest.kt
The native module registers LiveVoiceRecorder operations and starts transcription by recording URI. The recorder prepares and controls capture, reports status, and supports input selection. The audio patch adds recording-input discovery and routing support. Tests cover microphone release and stop behavior across recorder lifecycle states.

The Android bridge exposes live recorder creation and an optional live transcription operation. The provider uses a factory that selects the live recorder when available and otherwise creates the existing audio recorder. Tests check live recorder availability by Android version.
Controller lifecycle and completion packages/client-runtime/src/voice-input/transcription.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/voice-input/controller.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/voice-input/controller.test.ts, docs/user/composer.md
The transcription contract adds an optional live start operation. The controller starts it during recording, uses its result on stop, and aborts and awaits it during cleanup. Tests cover completion, cancellation, failure, and stale status. The Android transcription documentation is updated.

Explanation
The title "fix(mobile): transcribe Android audio during recording" matches the main change. The PR feeds 16 kHz PCM from AudioRecord to ML Kit during capture, so transcription runs while recording instead of after Stop. The title uses a conventional commit format and names the platform and the behavior change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section states the latency issue and the pacing constraint. The Change section explains live PCM feeding, stop-and-drain behavior, and controller changes. The Scope section cites a requester and a prior PR and limits the change to Android dictation. The Verification section gives test counts, a timing measurement, and linked evidence, and it discloses the temporary fixture adapter and the unverified USB and Bluetooth microphone paths. The description does not include a template-required visual before/after for UI changes, but the change is native and controller logic rather than a UI change, and the timing recording covers the motion evidence. The Scope section cites a requester (Alex) rather than a triaged issue or maintainer approval comment, which the template asks for. The template says a link to triaged bug issue or maintainer approval is required, so this gap should be filled before merge. The model and harness line is present at the end.
Resolution
Link the triaged bug issue or the maintainer discussion that approves this direction and scope, including the approval comment. The current Scope section names a requester but does not link approval.

Release the previous capture before prepare() replaces it.
When prepare() runs again before record(), the earlier capture is neither started nor released. Line 44 closes only pipe. Lines 69 and 98 then replace capture and audio with a new AudioRecord. The old AudioRecord keeps its native allocation until garbage collection. The old route selection is not closed on this path either.
The lazy wrapper can reach this sequence. prepareToRecordAsync() reuses the existing native recorder and calls native prepare() again (lazyVoiceRecorder.ts:58-65). An abort after native preparation also leaves the recorder prepared (lazyVoiceRecorder.ts:66 and 89). A later attempt then calls prepare() again.
Abort the previous capture before replacing it. The existing teardown at LiveVoiceRecorder.kt:184-190 already uses capture?.abort(). The check at line 43 ensures the previous capture is not recording, so an active recording is not affected.

Do not register LiveVoiceRecorder below Android 12.
On Android API 24–30, the module exposes LiveVoiceRecorder, but its constructor rejects those API levels. The exception occurs before AudioModule.AudioRecorder can be created, so ordinary voice input fails instead of using the file recorder.

The current counts are 56 focused TypeScript tests and 15 native tests, including regressions added during review: two Android API boundary cases and one native recorder preparation case. The original timing artifacts retain their original commit (a533281390) and counts (54/14). The PR now links a separate current verification report so those records are distinguishable.
The Android <12 fallback finding is addressed in 31a7924f27 with both native registration and JavaScript factory guards. The current title is fix(mobile): transcribe Android audio during recording, which already follows the required conventional format. Human maintainer review remains required before merge.

Drain an active capture before closing PcmPipe.
The controller starts live inference asynchronously before it marks recording active. If Stop wins that race, capture?.stop() can return after microphone shutdown while queued PCM remains. The following pipe?.close() can make the sender fail with incomplete-audio.
Await capture completion for an active recording, and always close the pipe during cleanup. Do not await completion for a prepared recorder that never started.

The microphone-preference concern in the summary comes from existing helpers on main. This PR's diff to patches/expo-audio@58.0.9.patch only makes recordingInputs, recordingInputUid, and RecordingInputRoute public so the live recorder can reuse them. It changes neither UID assignment nor the saved preference format; both recorders use the same matching logic.
The pipe-ordering finding against 31a7924 is addressed in 4238a4ecf1. The native regression covers active and already-draining captures before recognition starts, plus prepared-only cleanup and stop errors.

Problem
Android dictation records the whole clip, then spends another recording-length interval feeding it to ML Kit. A one-minute recording therefore adds roughly another minute after Stop.
The pacing is required: the original transcription PR found that unpaced and whole-file alternatives silently lost speech. This change retains paced STREAMING inference and moves it into recording.
