fix(web): keep the folder path caret in place while editing - #31642
In Add project → Local folder, editing near the start of the path moves the caret to the end. On Windows, deleting the drive letter (C:\Users\… → :\Users\…) and typing a new one sends the new letter to the end of the path. On Linux the same thing happens when you delete the leading / of /tmp/project: the caret jumps from 0 to 11, and the next / you type produces tmp/project/.
Change
The palette keys CommandPaletteContent on whether the query is a browse path. That remount resets Base UI's highlight state when the input switches between search and folder browsing, so it stays. An edit that briefly makes the text stop being a path flips that state, which remounts the input and loses the caret.
handleQueryChange now records the input's selection when a typed edit is about to flip browse mode. CommandPaletteContent restores it on the new input from its mount ref, and only when the new input's value matches. View pushes, back navigation, folder navigation and programmatic query changes are not recorded, so they behave as before. Arrow keys, Enter and highlight handling are unchanged.
Reproduced on main in the web dev server, on a fresh database with a Linux server. /tmp/project, caret after /, Backspace: the caret moved to the end and the typed / was appended (tmp/project/). Control: ~/wt/project, Backspace after ~, gives /wt/project. That is still a path, so there was no remount and the caret stayed put.
New browser test keeps the caret in place when an edit briefly makes the folder path not a path in CommandPalette.composition.browser.test.tsx. It drives the real palette with keyboard events, crosses the boundary both ways (path → not a path → path) and checks that each typed character lands at the caret. It fails on main (Received: workspace/project/) and passes here.
CommandPalette.composition.browser, CommandPalette.browser, CommandPaletteContent.browser and CommandPalette.logic tests: all pass. vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, React compiler.
Windows drive-letter case, with the server platform mocked as Windows in a scratch browser test that is not committed: Backspace C, type D, type x. On main this produced :\Users\developer\projectD; here it produced D:\Users\… with later typing at the edit position.
Focus: the mount ref runs once per mount under the React compiler. Focus on another dialog control (the Back button) survives rerenders.
Not checked: a native Windows desktop client, Safari/WebKit (the selection survives focus() in Chromium and Electron), and the content-search option toggles, which share CommandPaletteContent without the new prop, in a running client. Before/after recordings are not attached.
AI-assisted; verified with the tests and tools listed above.
Deleting the leading separator of a local folder path briefly makes the
query not a browse path, which remounts the palette input and moves the
caret to the end. This test reproduces #31610 and fails on main.

Deleting a path's leading separator (or a Windows drive letter) briefly
makes the query not a browse path. The palette keys its input on browse
mode, so that edit remounted the input and the caret jumped to the end.
The remount stays, since it is what resets Base UI's highlight state when
the mode changes. When a typed edit flips the mode, remember the input's
selection and restore it on the newly mounted input.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Preserves the caret and selection when folder-path editing switches the command palette into or out of browse mode. The change is limited to transient input behavior, with value matching guarding selection restoration.

Summary
Capture selection during browse mode changes apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/components/CommandPaletteContent.tsx
The command palette records the input value and selection when a query change switches filesystem browse mode. It passes the pending selection ref to the content component.
Restore selection and verify continued typing apps/web/src/components/CommandPaletteContent.tsx, apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.composition.browser.test.tsx
When the input mounts, the content component restores the selection if the input value matches the saved value. The browser test checks the input value after subsequent typing.
The change preserves the caret across folder-path mode switches. No merge-blocking risk was identified.

The title names the main change: restoring the folder path caret position while editing in the Add project local-folder flow. It uses the conventional commit format and fits the changeset, which records and restores input selection across browse-mode remounts.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #31610 requires the caret to remain at its edit position when the drive letter changes in Add project → Local folder. handleQueryChange records the input selection when a typed edit changes filesystem browse mode. CommandPaletteContent restores that selection after the input remounts when the value matches. The added browser test covers path → non-path → path transitions and verifies that subsequent characters remain at the edit position. The implementation applies the same transition logic to the Windows platform predicate.

Explanation
The changed files support issue #31610. CommandPalette.tsx captures and passes the pending selection. CommandPaletteContent.tsx restores the selection during input mounting and preserves existing focus behavior. The browser test verifies the caret behavior. No unrelated feature or change appears in the reviewed diff.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections explain the caret jump and the remount cause clearly. Verification lists reproduction steps, a new browser test, and unchecked areas. The Scope and approval section links issue #31610 but gives no maintainer approval comment or explanation for why the fix qualifies without one. The template asks for the triaged issue or the approval comment, so this section is incomplete. The verification section also does not attach before/after screenshots or a recording for this UI change, and it explains why none are attached.
Resolution
Add the maintainer approval comment or discussion link that approves the direction and scope. If no approval exists, explain why this focused fix of an obvious bug qualifies without a prior discussion. For this UI change, attach before/after screenshots or a short recording, or state why they cannot be provided.

Cover the Windows drive-letter case.
This test covers a Linux slash path, but the reported bug uses the Windows-only drive-path branch. Add a Windows fixture that removes and replaces the drive letter, then checks continued typing. The reported scratch test could provide that case.

Tested 77b2151 on Windows 11 (ARM64 VM): vp run dev running in the VM and Edge in the VM, so the server is on Windows and paths are drive paths.
In Add project → Local folder, I typed C:\Users\t3tester\t3pr, put the caret after C, pressed Backspace, then typed D. The value is D:\Users\t3tester\t3pr and the caret stays after D (position 1). On main it jumps to the end.
The edit from the original report also holds: ~/t3pr → delete ~ → type C: gives C:/t3pr with the caret at 2.
