feat: scheduled tasks can run in one thread with a fresh session each run - #30326
A scheduled task either started a new thread every run or, when an agent bound it to its thread, kept appending to one ever-growing conversation. Settings could not create a one-thread task at all.
Scheduled tasks gain threadMode: new_thread, continue, or fresh_session. One-thread modes launch their thread on the first run and keep it; fresh_session sends each later run with freshContext. Settings on web and mobile show a Destination picker on servers with the scheduledTaskThreadModes capability, and schedule_task takes freshSession.
Migration 079 adds thread_mode; existing bound tasks become continue.
A save that omits threadMode (older clients) keeps the stored mode. A save never clears a binding unless the mode becomes new_thread, so a form opened before the first run cannot unbind a thread that run just created.
Deleting the thread still deletes the task, as for agent-bound tasks; the form says so.
mcp-tool-use gains schedule-fresh-session-per-run; schedule-one-off-tomorrow now forbids freshSession. The tool list grows by 176 bytes.

Scheduled tasks now support a new thread per run, a continuing conversation in one thread, or a fresh session in one thread. The change adds persistence and execution behavior, MCP scheduling fields, and capability-gated controls in mobile and web settings.

Thread-mode contracts and capability packages/contracts/src/scheduledTask.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestratorMcp.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts
Contracts define new_thread, continue, and fresh_session. MCP inputs and results include freshSession, and the server advertises thread-mode support.
Persistence and run behavior apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations/079_ScheduledTaskThreadMode.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/reconcileV2PreviewMigration.test.ts, apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.ts, apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts
Migration 79 adds thread_mode and assigns continue to rows with a thread. The service persists modes, binds launched threads except in new_thread mode, and sends freshContext for fresh_session runs. Tests cover binding, mode preservation, and task replacement during thread launch.
MCP task creation and updates map freshSession and thread binding to thread modes, and task summaries report fresh-session use. Eval cases cover fresh-session scheduling. The configured MCP tool-list size increases.
Settings controls and draft state apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsScheduledTasksRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/scheduledTaskDraft.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/scheduledTasksSettings.logic.ts, docs/user/project-settings.md
Mobile and web settings show the three destination modes when the server supports them and include threadMode in supported upserts. Drafts default to new_thread or resolve the mode from an existing task. Documentation describes the destination choices.

Preserve the mode when threadId is omitted.
If an edit omits both optional fields, input.threadId == null treats omission as a request to clear a bound task. The resolver selects new_thread, and the save clears the binding. Later runs start separate threads instead of using the stored mode. Distinguish undefined from an explicit null, and add a focused test for an edit that omits both fields. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the threadId resolution in ScheduledTaskService to distinguish an omitted
value (undefined) from an explicit null: preserve the existing thread binding
and mode when an edit omits both optional fields, while keeping the
explicit-null behavior intact. Add a focused test for an edit that omits both
fields.

Resolved by 0dd63ce: a save without threadMode keeps the stored mode whether threadId is omitted or null, and an omitted threadId keeps the existing binding (threadId falls back to the stored one unless the mode is new_thread). The fresh-session service test covers a legacy save after the first run; it fails on the previous head.

Prevent a pending first launch from defeating an unbind request.
If a reusable task’s first launch is pending, existing.threadId is still null. An update with bindToCurrentThread: false and freshSession: true passes this guard. The pending launch can then bind its thread because bindThread accepts the saved fresh_session mode. Later runs use the old thread, although the update accepted an unbound destination. Coordinate this transition with first-run binding, or reject it while that launch is pending. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the unbind guard around existing.threadId so an update cannot accept an
unbound destination while a reusable task’s first launch is pending and can
still bind its thread. Coordinate the unbind transition with first-run binding,
or reject the update until that launch completes; preserve the existing behavior
for tasks without a pending first launch.

Keeping this as is. For a task with no thread yet, bindToCurrentThread: false plus freshSession: true asks for a one-thread fresh-session task whose thread the first run creates (the freshSession description says "Unbound: the first run makes the thread"). A first launch already in flight is a run of that task, so binding the thread it created is the requested outcome, not a defeated unbind. The case where the request means "leave the current thread", a task already bound to a thread, is refused since a6e4aa2, so no accepted update ends up in a thread it asked to leave. A request to discard the in-flight launch's thread would be a new action, not this update.
Clients that predate thread modes may send a thread loaded before the first run
bound one, so a save without a mode keeps the stored mode and binding.
schedule_task always sends the mode, so it can still unbind a task.

A save that keeps a task bound to its thread runs in that thread's mode, so the
ceiling check uses the resolved binding and runs before a webhook secret is
consumed.

…pdate
A save keeps a bound thread unless the task goes back to new threads, so the
pair bindToCurrentThread: false plus freshSession: true would leave runs in the
old thread. The update is refused with the two-step way to do it.

A bound thread stays in its project, so saving the task under a new project
unbinds it; a one-thread task starts its thread in the new project on its next
run.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
If the thread a first run launched is deleted before the binding is written,
its task cleanup found nothing to remove. The binding now rechecks the thread
and applies that cleanup itself.

…n its project
A save that moves the task during its first launch leaves that launch's thread
in the old project, so the binding also requires the launched project.

Upstream added scheduled task thread modes (pingdotgg#30326) beside the delivery
mode. The send mode migration moves to 081, sendToThread keeps the fresh
session queueing with the receipt replay, and Delivery shows for tasks
whose runs continue one conversation.

Factory code reaches pulled upstream PRs only through
apps/server/src/factories/upstream/index.ts, which re-exports one module per
dependency as a namespace. No consumers exist yet.
- freshContext.ts (pingdotgg#30323 and the pingdotgg#30325 slice): FreshSendInput, a
ThreadManagementSendInput with freshContext set to true;
MessageDispatchFreshContext, the type of the message.dispatch command's
freshContext field; and FRESH_CONTEXT_CAPABILITY, the "freshContext" key of
ExecutionEnvironmentCapabilities.
- scheduledThreadMode.ts (pingdotgg#30326): the ScheduledTaskThreadMode schema and
type, the scheduledTaskThreadMode helper, FRESH_SESSION_THREAD_MODE, and
ScheduledTaskUpsertWithThreadMode, an upsert input that always states its
threadMode. Both come from contracts, so nothing is taken from
ScheduledTaskService.ts.
- homeToolkit.ts (pingdotgg#15975): the FleetService tag with FleetActor,
FleetInvokeInput, FleetRequest, FleetOperation, FleetInput, FleetResult,
and the FleetResults decode map; the HomeWatchReport, HomeWatchEvent,
HomeWatchEventKind, and HomeWatch types; isHomeLaunchedThreadId; and
reportToHome, which calls HomeService.report. It wraps report instead of
re-exporting the HomeService tag, because the tag can also enable and
disable Home.
knip.jsonc lists src/factories/upstream/index.ts as an apps/server entry, so
knip neither reports the file as unused nor its exports. No ignore was needed.

Superseded: side chats keeping the main thread's permission mode now come from upstream pingdotgg#31114; Cody's ThreadForkService, ProviderTurnStartService and useSideChat overrides are gone and the docs line about it is removed.
Superseded: the web scheduled task row's "Posts to" label gives way to upstream's link to the thread (pingdotgg#31764); mobile keeps the label beside upstream's Open thread action.
Adapted: the "Post runs to" picker sits beside upstream's thread mode Destination (pingdotgg#30326). Picking a thread sets a one-thread mode, "no thread" is offered only where a save can unbind, and saves send threadMode, since the server now keeps a stored thread unless the mode is new_thread. Shared rules live in scheduledTaskThreads.ts; upstreamWiring.test.ts pins the web and mobile calls.
Adapted: upstream's Labs zen view (pingdotgg#30000) also keeps the answer before a short wrap-up, on web and mobile, with zen cases in both wrap-up tests.
ChatView.logic: Cody's worktree base ref plus upstream's fresh-context dispatch mode (pingdotgg#30325).
agentContextBudget.json: upstream's new sizes plus Cody's 371-byte final answer block.
build-desktop-artifact.test: mac and Linux now unpack @transcribe-cpp libraries (pingdotgg#30625).
Skill sync notes updated for thread modes, side chat permissions and the zen view.
