Sidechats and subagents showed a doubled bar in the iPad inspector. Auditing everything screen-stack related showed the doubled bar was one case of a general problem. The workspace split gave columns, the inspector and the sidebar toggle to AppBar, but about 50 feature screens still did the following:

They wrote their bar twice: iOS header options or Toolbar items, plus an Android-only embedded AppBar.
They branched on Platform.OS and liquid-glass support for chrome.
They built their own navigators just to get a bar.
They set sheet detents and corner radius from inside the screen.
They guessed the bar height four different ways (44, 48, IOS_NAV_BAR_HEIGHT, 0).

Now a screen says what it is and draws one bar. The layout layer and the design system make every platform decision. Five commits, one per layer:

Inspector panes draw their bar through AppBar. The thread and device previews no longer run a native stack inside the pane. A small JS-only navigator gives the preview its own route, so its route hooks don't act on the host thread.
Route presets.
- pageRoute, sheetRoute, modalRoute and immersiveRoute own header appearance, detents, corner radius, Android fit-to-content and the Android card or full-screen fallback.
- Stack.tsx goes from 29 Platform.OS checks to 1, which picks a navigation animation.
- Android hides the native header on every route from the first frame.
- One isPresentedRoute replaces six copies of that check.
No navigators in features.
- useSheetStackOptions and StandaloneStack replace the navigators that features built themselves.
- The thread preview gets a Thread route of its own (ThreadPreviewRoute, beside the inspector preview) that draws no native UI. It is thread-only on purpose: thread state resolves the thread from route params.
- Agents, Background work and Queued use the route header and SheetHeader, which gives them a close button on iOS.
One AppBar or SheetHeader per screen, the same on both platforms.
- AppBar loses its options escape hatch. It gains onClose (sheets and modals), confirm, guardBack, onBackToList and onCompose, and menu items can be destructive.
- SheetHeader takes actions and menus, and blocks the swipe when dismissDisabled is set.
- useBarInset, useBarOverlap, useContentTopInset and useSearchToolbarInset replace HeaderHeightContext and insets.top math in features.
- ScreenContent keeps the edge gap in Android split view by default.
- The thread bar has one git menu.
The workspace shell lives in features/layout/workspace. It draws the shared list header for Home and the iPad sidebar. docs/internals/mobile-layout.md describes the new rules.

Bugs fixed along the way

Agents, Background work and Queued sheets had no close button on iOS.
Three copies of the git menu disagreed about "Merge back".
The Files error states, GitConfirm on iOS and "Switching branch…" on Android had no bar.
The Environments add button was invisible on iOS.
Thread settings Save/Done differed between platforms.
Android never showed "Move draft to this line".
Some sheet detents had drifted.

Visible changes to expect

On Android, git and search sheets close with an X instead of a back arrow.
On Android, PR detail actions sit in one menu, as on iOS.
The Android settings filter is now nested, as on iOS.
On Android, thread settings and the branch picker put search in the bar.
The link-request card and worktree setup are standard sheets.

Checked on device: iPad Pro 13" (iOS 27.2) and Pixel 9 (Android 36), against seeded data. Each of these screens draws one bar: the thread bar, the git menu, the git overview in the inspector column and in the Android inspector sheet, Settings with its filter, and the Legal page. The gear in the top-right corner is the Expo dev-tools button, not part of the app.

Not checked on device:

iPadOS 18 and other fallbacks without liquid glass.
The Duo.
Search sheets.
The browser and device previews.
Scroll restore in the iOS PR list.

Before: the subagent pane shows an empty bar with the subagent's own bar stacked under it.

After: one bar per column, level across the window.

… the platform options Stack.tsx built every route from hand-merged constants with 29 Platform.OS checks, and sheets patched their own corner radius, Android fit-to-content and swipe guard from inside the screen. Detents had drifted between routes. - pageRoute, sheetRoute, modalRoute and immersiveRoute own header appearance, detents, the Android card/full-screen fallback, corner radius and fit-to-content. - The Android navigator hides the native header for every route from the first frame; screens always draw their bar in-tree. - One isPresentedRoute replaces six copies of the presentation check. - SheetHeader takes typed actions and owns the swipe guard for dismissDisabled. - The legal document and Environments sheets use SheetHeader/AppBar instead of raw header options; Environments' add button was invisible on iOS. Five features built their own native stacks, each with its own header recipe and liquid-glass check, only to get a bar: Thread settings, Custom snooze, the iOS sidebar column, the browser, and the thread preview. Agents, Background work and Queued hand-built a ScreenStack with no close button. - useSheetStackOptions gives a stack nested in a sheet the sheet route's bar. - StandaloneStack hosts a native bar outside the route tree (popover, sidebar column); sidebar-navigation-shell is gone. - The thread preview gets a Thread route of its own (ThreadPreviewRoute, next to the inspector preview) that draws no native UI. - The browser route has its own bar, and draws one SheetHeader instead of two bars. - Agents, Background work and Queued use the route header and SheetHeader, which gives them a close button on iOS. - SheetHeader takes menus, matching AppBar. …th platforms About 50 feature screens wrote their bar twice (iOS header options or Toolbar items, plus an Android-only embedded AppBar), branched on Platform.OS and liquid-glass support for chrome, and guessed the bar height four different ways. - AppBar loses its `options` escape hatch and gains onClose, confirm, guardBack, onBackToList and onCompose; menu items can be destructive. Search sheets, form sheets and modals use the same AppBar as pages. - useBarInset, useBarOverlap, useContentTopInset and useSearchToolbarInset replace HeaderHeightContext and insets.top + 44/48/72 math in features. - ScreenContent keeps the Android split-view edge gap by default. - The thread bar is one AppBar with one git menu; the three copies disagreed about "Merge back". - Settings filter menus, Usage, Files, ZIP and attachment viewers, PR detail, discussion and guide screens, git sheets, search sheets and thread settings each declare actions, menus and search once. - useOpenWorkspaceDetail replaces Android selectDetail vs iOS push branches. - Fixes: Files error states had no bar; GitConfirm had no bar on iOS; Android never showed "Move draft to this line"; thread settings Save/Done differed between platforms; "Switching branch" had no back button on Android. Home's thread list and the iPad sidebar each built the same brand, search and filter header from raw native options. - features/workspace moves to features/layout/workspace, with the Android pull request app bar. - WorkspaceListHeader draws the list header from typed data on both platforms; brand-title options, sidebar header items and the split empty detail move into the shell. Home and the sidebar share one filter menu definition. - docs/internals/mobile-layout.md describes route presets, the shell's location and the AppBar/inset contract.
